Lassie - Episode #47 - The Hawk" - Season 2, Ep. 21 - January 29th 1956

After Jeff and Porky have captured a red-tailed hawk, they attempt to tame the predator in order to train it to hunt like a falcon, but in the process of their elaborate plan, the bird of prey causes no end of trouble for Gramps and the farm chickens.
NOTE: Viewed from our more enlightened timeframe 60 years later, the ultimate solution Jeff's family espoused toward the hawk killing the farm chickens is one that demonstrated the mindset of that mid-century rural population in regards to wildlife, one that ultimately led to the sharp decline, and almost demise, of many of the avian predators in the 1900's. It is a sad episode, made even more tragic by the destructive nature of humans towards the balance of nature. It wasn't until the Forest Ranger years of Lassie that appreciation and respect for Nature was put forward in the episodes, rather than meeting every natural obstacle with the business end of a rifle.
