  • Today’s film is all about serendipity. Firstly, because I hadn’t originally intended going down the little side street in Dublin and didn’t know where it might lead me. But for other reasons too.
The side street, incidentally, is Dame lane, which runs parallel and to the south of Dame street and we turned into it just off Trinity Street, just so that you know how to find this if you come here.
A lot of work goes into these videos. You can now buy me a pint as a means of appreciation for my work on Naked Ireland, no obligation, obviously - only if you can afford it... I appreciate it. Cheers.
    www.buymeacoff...
The other level of serendipity happened when I edited the video and used one of my usual pieces of music - and I kinda liked how it blends with the dance music emanating from the night club - it’s the simple things sometimes that please!
Anyway the perfect serendipiteuos find (if that is even a word in the English language) is the pub that was just on the corner. Very easily missed, it’s the kind of place you might have to seek out if you’re interested.
The Stag’s Head dates back to 1770 and has the most beautifully restored Victorian interior dating from 1895. One of the pub’s claims to fame is that it stared in the brilliant Michael Caine and Julie Walters film, Educating Rita. I’ll let you rewatch the film and see if you can spot the Stag’s Head.
Regrettably since the bar changed hands in 2005 a TV has been installed - not particularly Victorian.
And as we pull down exposing the amazing and unique façade of this place the final stroke of serendipity was encountering a talented young musician playing the Irish pipes. I’ll leave you with this very beautiful sound and just remind you to like and subscribe to help us bring more videos to you.

I was at the Stag's Head in April 2022...Quiet weeknight and I was by myself. Sat at the end of the bar drinking a Guinness by alone. The staff were having none of that! I was soon surrounded by four of them joking, talking and making sure I was enjoying myself. Probably spent an hour with them solving all the world's problems. Stag's Head is everything an Irish pub should be!

Spot on. The Stag’s Head was one of the pubs I had highlighted to visit. It does require a bit of a search, even though it’s in the Temple Bar district, it’s down what appears to be an alley off the main streets. Absolutely gorgeous. It and The Palace similar Victorian feel.

Thanks Rick. It’s a bit outside Temple Bar - other side of Dame Street, but yeah, not a million miles away.

Hi what are some of the better pubs or restaurants in dublin that offer traditional food? Lamb mostly?

There’s a traditional Irish restaurant at the side of St Stephen’s Green called Shenagans on the Green. I haven’t eaten there myself, as I think it’s prob expensive, but you should check this out if you’re a foodie. In terms of pubs, you’re spoilt for choice - McDaids, The Long Hall, The Deer’s Head, Grogan’s, the list goes on (check my videos on various pubs), they’re not renowned for food (bar snacks mainly), but you’ll get an excellent pint of Guinness, which is a meal in itself.

Cool pub, I will have to rewatch Educating Rita now lol. Not a street I would go down I think or a pub I would enter, well not at that time of day, lunchtime maybe. I agree too, the music did blend lovely with your backing track. The one at the end was very talented, I dunno what you call the instrument he was playing, similar sound to the bagpipes I thought.

Hi Rob, the musical instrument at the end of the video is the Uilleann Pipes (Irish Pipes). Yes, I need to rewatch Educating Rita again too.

@@nakedireland I never used to like pipe music but as I get older I find I do, I must see what Uilleann Pipes are on RUclips.

Yeah the Irish pipes are a bit more agile and softer that the Scottish, check them out. Beautiful instrument.
