    Frame delays and trails are great effects used all over the place in our industry. Whether you're working with particles, live camera feeds, or pre-recorded content, trails and RGB delays are a great way to spice it up. Many folks turn immediately to feedback loops but you can achieve crisp, easy to control, and efficient trails using the Cache TOP. In this video, Elburz shows you how to setup basic trail systems and some tricks you can use to create RGB delays.

    Flawless tutorial. Learned some new TOPs, created a cool effect, demonstrated the power of simple Python in Touch. Best of all every step was really well explained. Thank you.

    is there some kind of python documentation for touch that you would recommend?

      The Python page on the Wiki is a good place to start, it has everything you'd need, it can be a bit tricky to navigate, so it's best to be patient and expect to be reading a bit more than you might have hoped. We also have a full workshop in The HQ PRO about how to navigate the wiki and how the Python area is organized. docs.derivative.ca/Category:Python

    quick and to-the-point tutorial, thanks! I was wondering is there a specific top that lets the trails stay a while on the canvas and then fade out really slowly?

    • @TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ
      @TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ  3 года назад

      It's not a single operator, but you can definitely pass the result after your trails into a small feedback network using a Feedback TOP and a Cross TOP. Have you worked with feedback in TouchDesigner?

    • @MohakSumaria
      @MohakSumaria 3 года назад

      @@TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ Thanks! Yes I tried the feedback top along with displace applied to a circle, and it did lead to some interesting results. Still the trails would disappear pretty fast. I will play around with the cross TOP this weekend.

    wouldn't it be easier to just feed the end singnal to the start and this way create a feedback loop?

    • @TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ
      @TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ  Год назад

      Great question - that approach definitely sounds like it would be a possibility on first glance, but it'll actually give you a slightly different effect. Instead of having discrete time-delayed "echoes" of the original signal, you'll end up with a "trail" of sorts that does not disappear over time (filling in the screen) and which doesn't provide a simple control over the time delay between the successive "copies" of the texture.
      Although you could adjust the opacity of the feedback loop so that the "copies" of the texture fade out over time, it would be a lot more difficult to decide "I want three copies of this texture, with a delay of 15 frames per layer" or something similar.
      In audio terms, it's almost like the difference between a multi-tap delay (with no feedback) and a reverb. They're related, but also distinct effects of their own. Hope that helps!

    Thank you for the tutorial! Can anyone point me in the right direction for creating slo mo effect on a live cam in?

    • @TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ
      @TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ  Год назад

      Doing slow motion as an effect in real time is tricky, you essentially need to be able to temporarily store frames and play those back at a slower rate. You could approximate this with something like a cache and cache select TOP, but the effect won’t likely be as seamless as you’d imagine. Might be worth looking into a webcam/camera that can capture at a higher frame rate as well.
