- Umatilla tribal member Acosia Red Elk spent years on the powwow circuit as a world champion jingle dancer. Now, she's combined its steps with yoga to create powwow yoga, and promote contemporary Indigenous healing through movement and dance.

I got to talk to you along the powwow trail once upon a time. I was so infatuated by your grace and beauty. Admired you and your husband both for your talent and contributions to the powwow world. I was just starting out....didn't have much and you both showed me kindness at a time I was struggling to "fit in my ownself". I admire you for your honesty and transparency when you still speak of your husband the way you do...did...and continue to. I see alot of men helping women along the way and often forgotten and discredited for their own walks and shortcomings. You still apparently to this day continue to carry your beauty, grace and I admire you from afar. Thank you for your kindness long ago.

First of all, beautiful regalia and incredible story that goes with it all ...winning 42 powwows in ONE year? Legendary super powwow powers! And you even won at the GON? Wow.
Btw, thank you for the jingle dress origin story...had no idea. I'm moving to Long Beach Peninsula in SW Washington so am trying to learn about a land I'm not used to. The Southern Sierras, where I'm at now, are so different .
I'm sure the People that've carried this land inside them for so long will have different traditions than the Yokuts & Chumash, too. I think it's the land itself that teaches People living close to the earth. And since the land, flora, and fauna of every area has its own "feel", its own medicine, the traditions the People learn in every area are going to vary a little, sometimes a lot.

Thank You for your story because I am soooooo drawn to the Native American culture being it’s a more oral tradition and it’s sooooo much miseducated spiritually it’s a feeling I get to pick me up before I hit deep very deep depression or what they call manic I was born in New Orleans soooo the New Orleans Black Indians have a space in my heart also my indigenous ancestors so I too meditate and pray knot to fall for any traps that my ancestors have love you my native sistar 😘

Intuition and innovation is what took us from shells to Mila Hanske metals for jingle dancing. You can use whatever you want or what is available for sound makers. That's not important - the steps and dances are. It should be fun, not stressful. Just dive in, cousin.

I can relate to her when she talks about not knowing where you belong because you're mixed. I am Cherokee, Apache, and French, sometimes I get put down because I'm mixed... But, I feel a strong connection to my Native American culture. I hardly feel anything for my French side of the genes.
We're all relatives. Respect your blood no matter where they came from. Embrace all ancestors known or unknown and just be happy being you and that you can be you because of them.
Your videos are very good. Anyone can see the Indigenous people in progress. I lived in an area where the Indigenous people like your tribe: Koriak, Aleut, and Itelmen tribes. The tribes have dancing and music similar to your tribe. But the big problem in these tribes: is alcoholism, no working places. It is time to survive. Good to see, you in development. Best wishes
