  • This is the first part of a five part series (which actually turned into a 6 part series!) on tips for breathing, starting with this video on "breathing basics".
    Breathing is the second highest component on the hierarchy of the CHEK Totem Pole. Most people can only go about 3 minutes without oxygen or air, before the brain starts to become compromised. If we are not getting sufficient air into us, it triggers quite an alarm reflex. How we breath also has a huge influence on the blood gas ratio of O2 to CO2. If we breathe incorrectly - that could be too fast or too slow, the sympathetic nervous system is stimulated which triggers a fight-or-flight response.
    So it is critical for optimal health and function that we breathe correctly, and in this video I show you how to breathe using the correct technique and major respiratory muscles, to avoid faulty breathing patterns and maintain an optimal blood pH.

      Eating Dead food is like cooking seeds and then planting them and thinking something is going to grow

    14:00 when people ask me 'if I do Wim Hof' rapid beathing, why would I become relaxed when I'm hyperventilating? Well that's why- because you are loading up CO2! Thanks for explaining this now i can answer.

    • @PaulChekLive
      @PaulChekLive  7 лет назад +4

      Hi,
      When hyperventilating, you are hyper-oxygenating, which stimulates the sympathetic nervous system.
      If someone is low-tone, or more toward a depressive or low energy state, rapid breathing may make them feel relaxed because it is elevating or normalizing oxygen levels.
      When someone has elevated SNS tone and they hyperventilate, it will make them worse, anxious, and if they are an ADD person, it will get worse in general.
      For those with elevated SNS tone from rapid, shallow breathing, slowing and deepening the breathing, and slowing the exhalation phase will allow more carbon dioxide to build up in the blood stream, which activates the PNS, and produces a calming effect.
      Love and chi,
      Paul Chek

    • @dennisgordon7767

      so basically mediation for those with sns elevation. but what if you are both depressed and anxious both? And is there a way to understand if your high anxiety is causing the depression from thinking 'why am i like this?" and reacting to everything all the time, vs real depression?

    • @PaulChekLive
      @PaulChekLive  7 лет назад +9

      Short on time...my suggestion it to "test methods". Only by exploring yourself and various methods will you ever determine "what works for YOU".
      If a depressed person can still experience anxiety, in general, they are not too depressed to make positive changes because they still have enough energy to power anxiety events. If one doesn't start getting intimate with themselves, having a Dream bigger than their crisis, then depression gets much worse. The PainTeacher always shows up to guide us, but we must listen, and act in ways that are dream-affirmative :-)

    Thanks for this video, Paul! I'm currently practicing these stretches and mobilization exercises that are in Elliot Hulse's "Muscle Virus Solution" program and I notice when I'm breathing through these stretches my body wants to tremble and Shake. I'm guessing I should just work through the shaking.

    • @PaulChekLive
      @PaulChekLive  7 лет назад +18

      Hi,
      If you are getting shaking during your stretches, it indicates a couple things:
      1. Very commonly, people stretch with too much effort/intensity. Stretch muscles with the same level of intensity you'd rock a crying baby if held in your arms. Working too hard at stretching triggers a stretch reflex to protect tissues and joints, and actually "stimulates the nervous system", which is the opposite of what you want; you may feel more flexible after stretching with too much intensity, but in actual fact, its not because of improved flexibility of the muscle and surrounding fascia, but is due to the tissues being warmer, and therefore, temporary improvements in flexibility are perceived; these disappear about as fast as you cool down after training.
      2. Shaking often comes when blocked chi (lifeforce energy) is being released.
      If you practice tai-chi, Qi-going, or the work-in exercises in my book "HTEM&BH!", and find yourself starting to shake in 10-20:00, then it suggests that your shaking is due to blocked chi; look in my book "HTEM&BH!" on p.100-101 and you will find charts explaining what areas of your body relate to which psychological functions or modes of engaging self and the world. It is essential to remember that the body mirrors the mind; often people work at addressing challenges at the physical level without realizing that the body is a work of art and the mind is the artist.

      Paul Chek

    Hi Paul I have long had an issue with breathing, I feel I cannot get a ‘full breath’ unless I yawn, it’s very strange.
    It is very distracting during meditation and I feel I cannot meditate properly as very frequently I have this ‘have to yawn’ sensation and it distracts from meditation when it’s happening so often. I feel it’s affecting my life in many ways this incorrect breathing pattern :( do you have any ideas for me?
    Sugar is not an issue in my diet.

    Paul i have studied your books and also your healing fungal and parasite infection dvd, I have a long past of fungal infection due to plenty of uneccesary antibiotics as a child and weak immune system lead to even more of it.. Well I have gone primary a anti fungal diet and feel alot better im sleeping deep and feels like my adrenals and body is regenerating. I also have a past of Obvious signs of Acidic Body and low PH levels, Tight lowback which is a sign to me that kidneys also may not be function optimaly. I have done a colon cleanse and im looking to do a kidney cleanse, And my question is i read that during a kidney cleanse (this one last 4 days) That its wise to eat no meat and alot of fruits and veggies that support kidney function, I know that probably my blood sugar and sleep will suffer during this time but From your expierence is this a wise idea to eat lots more carbohydrates and vegetarian diet so to speak during a cleanse period Even tho i have fungals that probably will love the diet, yet my kidney gets deeper cleansing. Then after the cleanse period i go back to the normal diet? Just wanted your take on it. Love and chi paul

    • @PaulChekLive
      @PaulChekLive  7 лет назад +1

      My advice for eating during a kidney cleanse is:
      1. Follow the 4-day rotation diet as outlined in my book HTEM&BH! very diligently.
      Eating any foods that you body has an intolerance, or allergy to, will add stress to the kidneys.
      2. Don't eat any carbs or carb combinations that will elevate blood sugar beyond ideal for your individual needs. If you need more carbs, stick to the ones that your body does well with.
      3. Reducing meat intake to just what you need to not feel hungry all the time, and cutting out any heavy meats, such as red meats in particular, and sticking to lighter flesh foods, such as fish, is a better plan while cleansing the kidneys.
      I don't normally make these kinds of decisions without all the information I gather during my assessment of each individual, but this would be my general suggestion.

    Hey Paul, I am a singer and my vocal teacher instructs me to expand my ribs out to the side rather than focus on the belly expanding out, and tells me to breathe through my mouth, while singing. I'm not sure whether to breathe like how you instructed in the video or how she instructs. What would you say?

    • @PaulChekLive
      @PaulChekLive  7 лет назад +3

      Hi,
      singing teachers vary as widely in their understanding of optimal breathing as much as physicians vary in their approaches to the treatment of most ailments.
      Without knowing your singing teacher's motivation for the breathing style you've outlined, I can only encourage you to explore the methods of other singing teachers, practice them, and see which methods work best for you.
      Lateral expansion of the ribs is usually the first of the three components of rib cage expansion to be diminished, largely because the bottom ribs sit right next to the kidneys, which are home to the adrenal glands, and because the quadratus lumborum muscles attach to the bottom rib, transverse processes of the lumbar spine, and to the crest of the pelvis. Whenever we are feeling stressed, the adrenals respond quickly, and if this happens too often, there is a progressive tightening of the muscles in the low back, the chief early responder being the quadratus lumborum, which provides essential lateral stability for the lumbar spine, and is a chief stabilizer of the lumbar spine. This muscle is classified as "tonic", which means it responds to stress by shortening and tightening, which immediately restricts lateral movement of the ribs, and therefore, decreases breathing volume, which would not be ideal for a singer.
      You stated in your comment above: "my vocal teacher instructs me to expand my ribs out to the side rather
      than focus on the belly expanding out, and tells me to breathe through
      my mouth, while singing"...
      As someone with extensive knowledge of how the respiratory system works, and the mechanics of how breathing occurs, my first concern reading what you've shared is that anytime you limit belly expansion "you limit movement of the diaphragm, reducing breath volume"; breath volume is CRITICAL for a singer; think for example of long, high notes, or even complex songs like you hear a lot of wrappers singing where there are often long strings of words spoken very quickly, with no room for inhalation or the tempo/rhythm of their song will be disrupted.
      Opera singers are famous for long, exquisite notes, and if you watch them breathing while they sing, they use their diaphragm fully, or there's simply not enough wind to keep the pipes dancing! If you watch The Voice, there are many instances I've seen where singing coaches are instructing singers on breathing, and so far, I've never seen any of them giving advice that goes against how the breathing mechanism works...so again...your singing teacher may have an opinion, or a specific objective, but to me, it sounds like it comes without too much understanding of the breathing mechanism. Personally, I would instruct you to master the Full Breath, and that requires expansion of the rib cage longitudinally, anterior to posterior, and laterally, with each component adding the capacity for greater breath volume and therefore, more freedom for voice play; if you consider what it takes to dance, and express yourself athletically - which requires quite a lot of oxygen in itself - while singing with the precision of any great singer from a stable position, you can see that air volume is essential.
      Breathing through your mouth while singing:
      Again, your teacher may have some unique motive for this directive. One may be that you don't have vocal cords in your nose, so keeping the air moving through the throat and voice box where it can contribute to singing is logical.
      That said, inhalation through the nose is very important to the regulation and balance of your autonomic nervous system (ANS).
      There are receptors in your nose that respond to air flow, triggering heightened activity of the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS), which has a calming effect on the body, and a balancing effect on the brain by stimulating right-brain activity, which is directly related to creative self-expression and being in "flow states", which is where the best singing, dancing, athletic, or artistic expression emerges from.
      If you breath through your mouth without the majority of the breath coming through the nose for any length of time, the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is stimulated, which facilitates a stress response, and switches us to left-brain hemisphere dominance, which is a narrow focus, logical, linear influence on how we process information; when one is in a legitimate situation where they are threatened, such as being chased by a lion, it is unwise to throw in a cart wheel while running for safety unless you want to be dinner. This means that whenever we breath through our mouth in absence of the nose, or even with the nose if the effort of breathing is high, then the brain hyper-focuses on what's right in front of it, and executes responses that are already programmed through life experiences so that there is no cognitive processing needed....in other words, when stressed, we tend to "react to the situation unconsciously, habitually", which is often not ideal, particularly when singing, because the shift in hormonal and ANS balance to heightened SNS activity leads to tension in the body, and a narrowing of your vocal ranges because all the muscles involved in voice control also tighten; what you get is akin to having a string instrument with its strings too tight, decreasing the working range of any note or range of sound available.
      My suggestion is to practice breathing optimally, regularly, and use the zone exercises in my book "How To Eat, Move and Be Healthy!" to oxygenate and energize your body-mind effectively, and calm your SNS. This will reprogram your breathing mechanism so that you naturally breath optimally, and with that patterning, you can have plenty of breath to play with, while keeping yourself in an open, creative, peak state or, "in the zone" so-to-speak.
      Hopefully, this gives you a better understanding of the importance of optimal breathing and breathing mechanics for singing.
      There are a variety of books, videos/DVDs, and audio programs for singing that cover breathing, so I'd recommend you look into it so you don't get taught bad habits by a teacher who may have the best of intentions, but not enough knowledge to realize the implications of their prescription; once you practice what I'm sharing and investigate other experts on the subject, you'll know if your teacher is the right teacher for you.
      There have been a number of cases where I've had to put professional athletes on singing programs to improve the size of their oral airway, and improve their breathing, so I"m familiar with how singing and breathing influence each other, and how singing can be effectively used to enhance breathing performance for athletes.
      Love and chi,
      Paul Chek

    Hey Paul Sir,
    I saw your video on abdominal crunches, which I liked and learnt from, but do you with your vast knowledge and wisdom understand that not everyone can read or buy your books.
    So I would request you to please make videos on what exercises to perform instead, it will be a great help Sir.
    I know you have your swiss ball video, but ideally you could have named it as, "The correct core strength and stability routine/exercises".
    If you really want to teach us something, which is people on RUclips who don't live in America and are not rich enough to buy your books.
    Or if you really want to sell a book which really helps, then make a pure exercises and mobility manual.
    We know about what to eat and drink and relationship etc., we need your in-depth manual on which is your main area of knowledge.
    Please Paul, we love and respect you already, but we can't buy your books, and we know about sugar, just give a thorough video on core which I think includes the lower back too.
    You won't lose any money Sir by not selling two books one for abs other for back, but if you put out the right info, I might really get interested into actually reading those books, not just buying and piling it in to the shelf.

    Question: I have anxiety in the gut when training ABS (i do the abwheel) Not feeling right away but when the soreness starts to set in ...Feeling like a tingle in the gut feels like anxiety/soreness in between. Is that normal?

    • @PaulChekLive
      @PaulChekLive  7 лет назад +4

      Hello,
      No, that isn't normal.
      This suggests that the tightening of your abdominal muscles is disrupting the flow of subtle energy through your chakras and meridians.
      I'd recommend you regularly stretch your flexor chain muscles as I showed in a recent vblog here.
      Stretching your flexor chain before you warm-up, and then again after you train will make a big difference.
      It is also essential to be sure you are keeping your posture balanced by using adequate amounts of pulling exercise to counterbalance your flexor or abdominal training.
      I would recommend you completely avoid abdominal isolation exercises such as crunches or sit-ups, and stick to functional abdominal exercises, such as wood chops and the many options I share in my book "How To Eat, Move and Be Healthy!"

    Hi Paul, I'd like to ask you about the world poverty and evolution. What is your opinion on the massive reproduction of the people worldwide, but especially in poor lands? How do you think it will continue and where the planet goes? There are more and more people without food and job and the western civilizations try to supply them with food and try to create gmo plants and more effective ways how to solve this problem. But is that the right way?
    Thanks, Love and Chi from Czech Republic

    • @PaulChekLive
      @PaulChekLive  7 лет назад +6

      This is a complex question...and I only have time for a short answer:
      1. Poverty and Abundance are complementary opposites, just like yin and yang are; one creates the other in all situations and the world has always been a place where some have more, and some have less; sometimes the ones that have more meet challenges of various types and then they become the ones with less and the others the ones with relatively more...a study of history clearly shows this. India was once an abundant center of trade, and became a place of extensive poverty while the US rose to the top of the trade market....and now the US is losing its position as the world trade center (and it lost the world trade center too!), and India is becoming a world leader in trade, particularly in the fields of computer, information, and service technologies.
      2. Evolution is an ongoing, impartial process that includes all degrees of yin-yang variability across the span of time.
      3. People in poor areas have always multiplied quickly; this is likely due to the fact that when people feel isolated, and are in pain, the one thing that soothes them is LOVE; whenever people become intimate, be it in poor areas, or even in a battlefield, offspring are common.... China, under communist, dictatorship rule, also had a lot of poor people, and a population problem, which led to the implementation of population control as a necessary means of avoiding starvation in the long run.
      4. If you read the book titled "Farmers Of Forty Centuries" by F.H. King, you will see that the US government already investigated the issue of organic vs. commercial farming specifically to investigate how much organic farmers in so-called "primitive or antiquated countries" all the way back in the early 1900s, and found that organic farmers MASSIVELY out produced US commercial farmers.
      The whole concept that we need GMO and biotech foods and commercially farmed foods to feed the people of the world is a corporate agenda, and is factually BS!
      Finally, it is essential to comprehend that what we refer to as God is not some Father figure in the sky that only supports the good, the rich, the fortunate ones, but is, like the Sun, Unconditional Love; the sun shines its light in every direction, plays no favorites, and while some are basking in the beach getting a lovely tan, at the same moment, others are dehydrating, burning and dying under the influences of that very same sun.
      God cannot know ITSELF by only expressing itself through one polarity, and is UNCONDITIONALLY invested in experiencing ALL that God IS, which includes the light and the dark, the good and the evil of all possibilities offered in and as life.
      If you read a King James Bible that was printed twenty years or more ago (before the church changed the passage to favor their control strategy, as they've done MANY times), you will find that Isiah 45:7 tells the whole story very completely:
      In paraphrase:
      "I create the light and the dark,
      I create good and evil,
      I the Lord do all these things."
      And that is the way of it.
      The more spiritually evolved one is, the more inclined they are to find and/or create harmony and equanimity in any situation.
      It is also a mistake to think that poor people have it better than those with money.
      Simply look at the rates of chronic disease, depression, and suicide among children, and people of all ages in wealthy countries relative to poor countries, and you find that often, those in poor countries have less disease, and a higher level of overall happiness.
      Having worked with MANY rich people in my career, I can assure you, their money opens the doors to many painful experiences, such as "how do I protect my money", and "How do I get people to stop constantly wanting me to give them my money", to "how to I get my children to act the role of an adult in the world now that I've spoiled them rotten", to "using their money and power to engage warfare to try and get more, often to loose countless lives and their land and wealth in the process", to "being wealthy one minute and loosing it all in the stock market only to commit suicide the next day because they can't bear the thought of living in a lower sociol-econimic class"...and the list goes on.

    Tongue behind the lower or upper front teeth? )

      The upper front teeth; your tongue should go there naturally when you swallow.

    What does it mean when you don't put your tongue on the top?

      HI,
      It may mean that due to postural imbalances, your tongue has taken an adaptive posture, or it can mean you have an infantile swallow pattern, as I shared in the video.
      My first suggestion is that you consciously keep the tongue where it belongs when exercising, doing work-in training, and whenever you can remember to do it coupled with getting a Chek Professional to assess you and design an effective corrective diet and lifestyle program for you so you can balance your body-mind.
