About 25 or so years ago I read Ragtime for the first time and fell in love with Doctorow right away. Through the years I've read basically all his novels and I have to say I've loved them all. H&L is such a sweet story, truly a must-read; also I cannot recommend enough "City of God", the BEAUTIFUL "The March", and the really good short stories from "Sweet Land Stories". I once saw a play based on the story of the Collyer brothers. It was original - not based on ELD - and not especially good, but I sure haven’t forgotten it. Now for the first time I can place the context. I liked your description of the relationship between the brothers - at the opposite end of the spectrum to the Karamazovs I suppose.
