  • On the waves of the Pacific,
Down south from the Imperial city
    a small lonely islands floats.
The fate of our imperial country
Lies in the hands of this island,
    Iwo Jima.
    As long as we stand,
    We shall feel safe,
As the imperial land shall forever be at peace.
    We shall fight with pride
    and honor at any price,
    Our proud island, Iwo Jima.

What makes these scene so sad is that the general knows he can't successfully defend Iwo Jima. The song serves to highlight his failure, he was tasked with defending the island to keep his people on the mainland safe.
Those same children singing a song of encouragement are now at risk bec. he failed. That is a heavy burden to carry.

He knew well before he even got to the island that he won't be able to defend it forever. His goal was, as he stated it, to inflict as many casualties as possible so maybe the US won't dare to invade the Japanese mainland. I don't think he felt that he failed.

These men fought for their home, for their families, absolutely true in their motivations. This was Japanese soil, they knew the next stop was the mainland.
But still, I can't help but disagree and say they did ultimately die for nothing. Japanese leadership knew the war was lost, they simply wanted to make an invasion so costly for the US that they could get a negotiated surrender, and in the end they surrendered unconditionally anyway. 20,000 Japanese lives wasted on that desolate rock, so senseless. I suppose that's war though; get soldiers to fight for noble reasons in the service of ignoble leaders.

@Nathan Morrow You have to keep in mind that Japan did lot of cruel things during World War II. Like Unit 731. Unit 731 is basically a death camps like Nazis death camps in Germany, but in Japan. ( Location Manchukuo.) Where they did fucking evil experiment on people, testing biological and chemical warfare. Then , we got the Rape of Nanking or Nanjing massacre. Where it estimated 40,000 to over 300,000 Chinese were killed. Etc of Japan War crime. ( Should I even continue.) Like Germany, when nation do massacre, war crimes, slavery, put people in gas Chambers, do experiment on people and etc. There's nothing to be proud of when country do thing like this. it's not OK to do this. To make this worse. America helped bailout ( help them Escape Justice.) the people who are RESPONSIBLE for this war crimes. Both Germany scientist. and Japan scientists. Swallow that.
Don't get me wrong, I understand what you are trying to say. All Democratic , Republic countries or countries in general. Did positive things in their history. we shouldn't ignore and be proud of our dark history. We must learn from it, understand it. Learn from our mistake, Learn the lesson of life. ( Or other words the past.). looking towards the future to be better people, to be better human being, to be better species and not just that. Understanding the world around us.
You know nationalism and Patriotism are two different things, you know that right. Nothing wrong being patriotic for your country. Yes. It's true some countries are better than others. Some countries has better Laws like Denmark and Norway. Some has better culture like Japan and Mexico. Some countries has Better military like Russia and China. Some countries has better freedom like USA. ( I do think USA is better all three these things.) Each countries has Pros and cons.
But, the most important thing we have to remember as human being. As a species. We are all connected and we are all human beings living on this planet.

I think this particular scene can be attributed to Japan's growing desperation to protect its empire as children as little as a 5 year old are being involved in the war that they don't even understand what it's all about.

None of them were responsible for the war crimes committed by the Japanese Empire and the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere in China, Burma, the Philippines or other places.
Most of them were young men in their late teens or early 20s and older men. Their commanding officer was likewise not connected to any known war crimes.

It was a hopeless battle for the Japanese although they fought well - as well as any soldiers in history.
But attacking Iwo Jima was in hindsight a mistake, like Peliliu before it. If any good came from Iwo, it was to show the American military what an invasion of the Japanese mainland would entail and perhaps hastened the decision to end the war using the A-bomb.

I cried when i watched that film. Its not right that japanese soldiers are bad in most films. Both sides thought that truth is on their side. Especially when the protected motherland.

i felt really sorry for all those men who fought bravely to defend their motherland.. but sometimes war isnt that simple... rape, murder and other things. if there were a clean war, then i would call that war "A war of heroes". coz everyone is a hero. they fought to defend what they believe... May peace be spread in the future.

Apparently this actually happened. Allied radio interceptors/translators on American ships supposedly cried hearing this because they knew the Japanese were ready to fight so hard for the island and their country but it would be a lost cause as the Americans were too powerful and consequently an extremely high unnecessary number of Japanese would lose their lives.

If the Japanese Armed forces were behaved in well mannered during the war,and seen as liberator(from western power to their colonies)rather than conquerors. Most of Asian and South east Asian peoples were gladly join the Japanese nation cause. Sadly...

who hasn't read this whole topic, do so...it just proves one thing. people are STILL looking for "the bad guys" from WW2. I'd just like to say that war is war and there are NO good guys and NO bad guys because BOTH sides fight for THEIR beliefs. and thus, people who find a bad guy or a good guy, are just seeing one side of the cube. take a moment and see the other 5 sides, too.

@akropiss Yeah, yeah, like the allied soldiers never committed atrocities themselves.
And my great-grandfather was an allied soldier, and he told my grandfather about many atrocities he saw committed by both sides. It gave him a very cynical view of anything 'good' in a war.

@Eddtastic100 Actually, the Japanese were invading the Chinese at the time of the oil embargo. If Japan didn't invade China, then it wouldn't have happened. Japan then would have invaded the Dutch East Indies (Malaysia, Borneo, ect...). There's a reason why the U.S put the embargo against Japan. Before the war even started. Look up the Nanking massacre in 1937.
