- RUSSIA: "Journalists as hostages" - Putin's perfidious show trial against Evan Gershkovich
The espionage trial against Evan Gershkovich is seen as a show trial to portray the USA as a great enemy and to have someone to exchange for Russian prisoners.
In an interview with WELT, BILD chief reporter Peter Tiede explains the difficult conditions for foreign journalists in Russia, which have become even stricter since the Ukraine war. Russian independent journalists have hardly been able to work for over ten years, as 99.9% of the media are controlled by the Kremlin.
Tiede reports on personal experiences of being arrested three times and interrogated for hours without consular assistance or legal support. The Russian legal system is designed in such a way that the accused is always guilty. Moscow uses show trials to take journalists hostage and exchange political prisoners. Negotiations are currently underway to exchange the Tiergarten murderer for Gershkovich. US President Joe Biden has already spoken out in favor of Gershkovich, which highlights the dimension and the parallels to the Cold War.
