Clarification: The one species system is still more commonly used in research articles. Most researcher still uses Rangifer tarandus for any reindeer / caribou. However, the arguments given to validate the 6 species sounds reasonable, so, like i said in the video, at the very least i think it's rational for the 6 clade / lineage to be valid. We'll have to wait for a comprehensive research to be done that includes representative(s) from each population.
I have a question. Is there a particular reason why the reindeer in woodland habitats favor the harem-mating season, and why reindeer in more open habitats favor individual mating pair system? Just curious.
This would have been such a useful source for my assignment last year! I couldn’t find indept info about the classification of reindeer, didn’t really know there was (at least not as specific), so info about "reindeer" was a liiittle different across sources, it was frUstratiNg ʕ•v•ʔ I learn a lot from your videos, they are cosy and fun, and you explain the stuff so well^^
American here! Yes we tend to call domestic “caribou” reindeer, although I think that may be because they were domesticated in the old world and then brought over here where we already had a separate set of wild subspecies. However I would say that most people in the U.S. are unaware that they are the same species (or genera going by the taxonomy of your video). Also I think the image you used for the domestic reindeer might be an elk in velvet (1:40 right side).
Your video is incorrect, the caribou or reindeer is currently only one species under one genus, the subfamily they belong to is actually Cervinae (Old World Deer), it is the sole extant species of the tribe Rangiferini.
@@OutofPlaceZoologist i can see why the multiple species argument migth be a bit "controversial" but them being Old world deer is just plain wrong lol, why would someome make a bot for this

The curse of Nokotan still persists long after the show lmao
Actually we use deer, Reindeer, and caribou depending on culture or person. added we sadly no longer see them in U.S much.
When an American sees a reindeer or caribou what we say is "How the hell did that get here?"
They’re extremely common in Alaska and not uncommon in some areas bordering Canada
