    This season finally broke me. I've watched Who since the classic era when I was a kid. I gave up after the 2nd episode of this season. Somehow Chibnall has managed to do what I thought impossible and actually make the show even worse than Moffat did. Now I just watch the reviews to see if there is any improvement rather than subjecting myself to the episodes firsthand.

    • @jackwood7726
      @jackwood7726 6 лет назад +7

      It may not be working, but the direction the show is going is far better than moffat era. Sure, most of the stuff doesn't work, but at least he's trying new things and new monsters rather than sticking to a formula (like a series formula that moffat did). Each episode is it's own self contained story which I am much preferring over the moffat era.

    • @FerretLG1
      @FerretLG1 6 лет назад +3

      Jack Wood I personally think that’s part of the problem and was always an issue with latter day Chibnall episodes pre-Jodie Whittaker. I think Chris has good ideas, but like Moffat, he can’t always weave them neatly into a well paced story. There’s no breathing room, and whilst he seems to want to take a slower, talkier pace, you only have 50 minutes to play with, and so whilst the character writing and drama is relatively strong, the sci-fi elements and villains are very weak. The whole self contained, monster of the week villain and rushed last minute conclusions are giving me bad flashbacks to series 7. Speaking of which, an easy example in that series would be the Power of Three, in which the ideas are absolutely golden in that episode and it works well for the first half, but just feels like a rushed convenient mess by the end.

    Personaly, I don't like the theme of how they should treat this spiders with respect, but for a different reason. The doctor seems not to treat them with respect at all! She smiles as she is planning to kill the mother spider and she locks them up in ridiculously small space, considering that we saw at least one spider that was almost the size of the safe room! Doctor being way more cruel than she should be seems to be kind of Chibnall's thing, and it's especially weird because of the anti-violence message that is everywhere in his episodes. Just look at The Women Who Fell to Earth - in one of the last scenes the doctor is taking great satisfaction in watching her enemie's cruel demise, but when the almost victim of the monster pushes him of the crane, she screams about how it shouldn't have been done. WTF, Chibnall, make up your mind, the Doctor can't be simulanously cruel and pacifistic!

      Worst than the 5th doctor killing Omega coldly, even though indecisiveness is part of his character. At least, he did it to save the entire universe from an matter/antimatter explosive reaction. But from what I heard, the 13rd doctor killed while not even solving the Spider issue in Sheffield. Terrible characterization... If we are supposed to feel sorry for the arachnids but the doctor exterminate them without an afterthought, doesn't this make her a sociopath?

    So after the initial hype of a female doctor has died down exactly what I thought would happen is happening. Series 11 is rapidly turning into a train wreck. weak companions and a lead actress who doesn't look comfortable in the role, and the death stroke of boring uninteresting stories. Compare this to Matt Smith or Tennant who by 5 episodes into there runs had there Doctors nailed and all told its not looking good. Sorry but the Jodie experiment just isn't working. And if the series carrys on the way it's going I fear for its future.

      I think the major problem is that Chris chibnall isn't trying to establish a season-long Arc and have individual episode instead so none of these episodes really feel as though they're building to anything they're just random and if you're going to do that the episodes have to be compelling from beginning to end which they haven't been halfway through the season it feels really safe like he's afraid to take creative chances because he knows this season will be scrutinized heavily

      I agree with a lot of what you say. I also feel that this series before it even got off the ground was hijacked by the PC brigade at the BBC and instead of looking at what worked and was best for the series, they instead went down the route of let's just change everything. The occasional standalone story is fine but at the moment it's like there running in treacle. It's halfway through and hopefully it improves but I'm not convinced it will.

      The problem isn't the actors. It's the writing. Actors don't have control over plot, dialogue, etc. Which is what can make or break a show. Bad actor, replace the actor, done. Bad writing, potentially replace an entire writing team and the new people figure out what to do to bring a bad show back up and keep continuity and whatever else. It has nothing to do with the actors or the doctor being played by a woman. It has everything to so with writing and chibnall.

      She doesn't use it to show her authority in any situation to either investigate or gain control. For example, showing Jane her badge would have allowed her to discuss the spider research.
      The Doctor could have even flashed her magic paper and played off the humour of not looking like pest control or the police. Undercover etc.

    I so want to like Jodie Whittaker, and after having seen Broadchurch and her doing Antigone onstage, I can't believe how bad the writing has been for this season. And as an American, I am telling you that the BBC is risking a HUGE chunk of it's audience over here with episodes like this turd and having Chris Noth play a horribly bad Trump caricature. I mean, the dialog was cartoon villainish. The nonsense that came out of Noth's mouth from the writers reminded me of old GI Joe and Transformers cartoons from the 1980's. I can only hope that the rest of the season picks up and gets better, because so far, Doctor Who is not only full progressive nonsense and social justice warrior, but it's doing so and it thinks it's doing well. It's not. Whittaker as an actor deserves better than the writing she's been handed.

  • @dune102

    When the boss is talking to the female employee at the start and says "we're family right, what are you?", the reply from the female character is"I'm your niece's wife".
    So we're told that this female character is gay, which has nothing to do with the storyline whatsoever.
    I was hoping for more sci-fi and no more social justice warrioring from the BBC with the change of writer that this series had, however, it seems that writers just have to put that stuff in if the episode is to be aired by the BBC.
    Hopefully the series will one day get back to great sci-fi writing and stop trying to be a vehicle for promoting "progressive" views of the world that have nothing to do with the story.
    Great analysis btw. Thanks.

      @2manynegativewaves You missed my point by a country mile.
      My point was that throwing in these little asides re someone's lifestyle or sexuality (about which I care nothing either way) is nothing to do with the storyline, and as such, is immersion breaking.
      Its nothing more than a BBC diversity checklist, and detracts from what should be a great sci-fi show.
      I believe Dr Who tried something similar in the original series where they attempted to be educational.....it was short lived, unlike the current trend.

    • @Voidwurm1701
      @Voidwurm1701 6 лет назад +1

      I completely agree with the original comment.
      Compare this to a character like Captain Jack. He was essentially sexually attracted to virtually everything; women, men, aliens, robots, himself, and I think even a fucking dog once.
      However, this was woven into the plot like a quilt. It fit perfectly. They never tried to single it out for progressive points either. At least I don't remember that ever occurring.
      It was part of his character. He was from the far future, from a time where they were much more open about the idea of sexuality than we are now. The only thing he never liked was children.
      It was comfortable, funny and also made him UNIQUE.
      Being a gay who likes man peepee or woman boob does NOT make you a complex, likable, interesting or unique character. It makes you a stupid quota to be filled or a flat piece of nothing.
      And lastly, not that it should matter or make my point any more valued, but I'm "LGBT" myself and I find it patronising that we're being reduced to one tiny aspect of ourselves that doesn't even matter at all.

    When Graham entered his house and saw his wife I thought that the spiders had 'evolved' a new trapping mechanism. Since their webs would be ineffective at catching humans they needed to deploy some kind of psychological lure to entice humans to come closer so that the spiders could feed, hence the appearance of Graham's wife. This could have been a real threat as everyone would be a target, and it could even reveal what characters truly want. There could have been a moment where Jas would see Ryan and she'd walk towards him confessing her love to him, but it would be spider trap all along. But no, the spiders were just normal plain spider, but bigger.

It's as if someone just handed him the cliff notes of the series with all the main points like "the doctor doesn't like guns", "the doctor is lonely" and "the Doctor dresses poorly" and he just set out to force in each of those points into the episodes, when all he really wants to do is make shitty leftist propaganda.

    This could have been the sequel to Planet of the Spiders. Arriving through a portal, Metebelis III spiders come to the aid of the Sheffield spiders, having sensed their plight. Knowing the spiders have no future on Earth, the Doctor helps both the Metebelis III and Sheffield spiders to escape back through the portal. The Doctor did not want to kill them, so this would have been a good ending. Continuity can be full of problems, but this would have been the perfect moral climax!!!

    I felt that this episode was the first one of the series that actually felt like a proper dr who episode.
    Episode 1 felt too dark and even slightly Torchwood esq.
    Ghost monument was a dull, non threatening filler episode.
    Rosa had some good emotional moments but was a bit too political. The Villain was underwhelming and it whilst it is important to make people aware of these events, I don't think 50 minutes of a sci fi show is the best way to do it. I have nothing against people that loved this episode and were touched by it but it didn't feel like a proper dr who episode to me.
    Whilst this episode had plot issues, generic plot and annoying moments, it felt like what a Dr who episode should be in terms of a sci fi show. I still wish that they woukd tone down the political aspects though. Hopefully the rest of season 11 will improve and stick to what dr who is
