  • Footage of Neil Armstrong training for Apollo 11 EVA activities with Lunar Module and Alsep mockups on April 1969. The footage was taken underwater (to simulate lunar gravity). It was dark, grainy, and with poor color reproduction. This version was cleaned up using AI and level adjustment to improve shadow detail and present more neutral colors.
Classical music was added to the original silent footage.
Original footage from NASA. Sound and image cleanup, conversion to original 24 fps frame rate, geometry correction and color restoration by RetroSpace HD.

Watching Neil practice getting up when he's on his front or back is something I never expected. Important practice, but he was rather graceful traversing Mare Tranquillitatis a few months later. While the pool provides the buoyancy offset to simulate 1/6 gravity, it comes at the cost of water resistance that isn't an issue on the moon, so everything looks so much more difficult than it should be. I wonder how well they captured the mobility range of a real A7L EMU in a vacuum with that underwater practice suit.

Wow! WHen he was walking on the "moon", it was just like half speed walking on the earth. Amazing!

Where did this LEM training occur; Houston? I remember Huntsville had a tank about this size too.

Interesting but it would have been more so if the video included the voices of Armstrong and the controllers.

Cool under water training video of Neal Armstrong back in 1969. I did not know they trained under water for the moon walks!!.

Nice that we have this, since arrogant Buzz Aldrin refused to take any photographs of Neil on the moon.

I try to imagine what would happened to Buzz, if HE would have been the first to touch the moon… 😂😂😂

I think it was more the case that Neil had the only camera fixed to the front of hes suit at chest level. Taking pictures of each other was way down on there list of things to do while having only 2 hours on the surface.

@@spacemonkey59 I had long assumed that only Neil was given a camera, but I have seen on recent reliable youtube sources that Buzz Aldrin was given the camera by Neil halfway through their EVA. He refused to photograph Neil, because he was upset that his strong request to step out first was turned down. His reasoning was that the commander of a ship is the last to exit, which was the protocol for splashdown recoveries. But when NASA rejected that for the moon walk, Buzz threw a fit and photographed only experiments or the LEM. He deprived the ages of the pictures it deserves of the first person to walk on the moon. A petty horse's ass Buzz is.
When Neil Armstrong was asked about Buzz' failure to photograph him, he has said only that the plan didn't call for pics of him. Not true, but he was wanting to avoid a spat. He has also quipped, "Buzz is more photogenic than I am."
