This entire game looks like one of those high quality static images that pixel artists spend hours making. I wish it wasn't pretty much the only game of it's medium to have this quality and quantity of art and animation.
It's expensive and hard to make, unfortunately. Blasphemous had that confluence of skill and passion but its hard for other developers to afford the massive risk of failure, monetarily. Here's to hoping it inspires generations to come, however.
@οὐτόπος I still take Hollow Knight as the highest point of the metroidvania genre, but Blasphemous follows up very closely, just needed some more complexity in the maps, the way to play it was a bit lineal
The boss fights in this game, specifically the small one-on-ones a like Esdras or fucking Crisanta, are some of the most frustrating, well designed, and satisfying bosses I've ever faced. My favorite boss fights are the ones that feel like you're actually fighting a person, and those two give me that feeling. I fucking love this game.
Loved this game, just as you said the sprite work is just beautiful for just how brutal the game makes everything look. You certainly did a lot better than I did on my play through as well because fuuuck did I have troubles with that first boss.

In my opinion, it’s the only 2D “Metroidvania” that can compare to Hollow Knight! Admittedly, the jank prevented me from playing again after I got 100%. Eventually I will have to replay to experience the final dlc. I only hope they build on what has been established for the sequel! The grotesque subject matter really appeals to the 14 year old edgelord in me. Haha
I love how this game is mostly in spanish or at least you need to know a bit to get some stuff. Well now that the dlc is out and since this game is based on spanish culture the lore will be expanded only if you played it in that language.
I bet at least half of the staff that made this game used to work at Gameloft back when it was good. I'd recognise those aesthetics and gameplay anywhere, particularly from their old prince of persia mobile adaptations. Really talented people.
Btw the ending A bullshit is super worth it and fun. I did it on accident my first playthrough (as in I completed a few of them, looked up how to get the good ending, and saw I just needed to do it for all of them) But basically, you equip the perfect pearl rosary or whatever it's called, basically the thing that does nothing, and then die 3 times with it equipped and it'll turn into "the Weight of Guilt" or something like that. Then destroy those Guilt statues and play through their challenges, which are these fun rooms where waves of enemies are spawned and you just survive till the end. Do that for all 7 and that's it. It's super fun.
I loved playing through this game. It was absolutely fantastic to play through. The only thing I genuinely dislike is how the side quests work but aside from that it's an amazing game.
I know it's from totally different field of games but I think THE best pixel art I've ever seen in my entire pixel loving life is got to be in the Heroes of Might and Magic 2. The sheer magnitude of a visual masterpiece they manage to do with the amount of pixels they have on their hand is downright astonishing.
Forgot how good this game was; haven't played it in so long. Cool to see you go through it dude and love it like I did. The art is still just as stunning as when I first play it.
