The Song Battle of Finrod and Sauron

- This major collaboration for SilmFilm S6 premiered at Ozmoot24. Lyrics and script developed by the Script team headed by Ilana Mushin. Finrod vocals by Evan Langford, Sauron by Dillon Rodrigues-Currie, both prolific contributors to SilmFilm.
The complex piece involved joining together two differing but not unrelated pieces of music, Finrod’s uplifting song of hope (F# major 6/8 time) vs Sauron’s song of despair (G# minor 4/4 time).
Finrod’s song skips along with energy, the 1,2,3, 1,2,3 beat lending itself to stresses on the 1st and 3rd beats except words that needed stress on 1,2 such as “cannot”, “Varda” and “freedom”, because of the imperative nature of these words. At the lines “West of the World, whence came the light,” Finrod pulls out Lydian mode to add lightness. Short chord changes toward the end reinforce Finrod's magic agility. The final “trust is unbroken” line brings us back to the predictability and safety of I, iv, V, I chords.
Sauron’s song is harsh and regular with raw power which feels more like pounding, adding mocking three note motifs reminding us of Finrod’s song “those you (slew)”, “Taste of (tears)”, “faithless you (are)”, pulling down everything that Finrod tried to build.

I would like a tad more drama in there for such a momentous battle… Great interpretation though!
Find me an animator and we could add a lot more drama than static image can ever do. The script that this is taken from has more drama.

It is rather painful, though, when they are both singing a flat.
I am glad that their dissonance was so unsettling.
