Yup... happened that way for me. I always liked his acting, liked his short video about "USA have the highest standard of living... not!" But... very pleased to see he is rooted in good music!
The story is about an American boy getting ready to go to war, going to the base in Clarksville before being sent overseas. It is an important song. Thanks, Jeff.
It's actually Fort Cambell, KY, right across the border from Clarksville, TN. The only reason I know that is that my family stayed in the Holiday Inn in Clarksville when visiting my brother in basic training.
It was years later after "The Monkees" first performed this that I learned it was about a young man heading off to Vietnam. The 60s were the best of times except for riots and the Vietnam War (police action)!! Jeff Daniels is one of my favorite people!!
I saw Jeff Daniels on the Kelly Clarkson show. He really surprised me which is an understatement. As he did Kelly Clarkson. I would never have believed it if I didn't see it myself.
I love when actors show us all that they can play and sing too. Some good Jeff Daniels movies.. ‘Fly away home’ , ‘RV’, and who can forget ‘Dumb and Dumber.’
The Beatles had just changed the creative landscape with their "Revolver" album; and in that avalanche of creativity this remarkably touching song was released upon the world. Note the urgency of the lyrics? As the protagonist urges his love to meet him one last time before he leaves for battle in SE Asia.
"Music is Win" just updated his ten best celebrity guitar players and put Jeff Daniels at the top with a clip from the Kelly Clarkson show. The man can play, make no mistake. And yes, this is a cool version of this tune.
Nice job Jeff basically said something to effect of - " here is one that you will recognize- eventually" before they started playing the song. Funny thing is depending how old the audience was- if they were younger (at all-lol) they probably did not recognize the song. Me, on the other hand Im an old dude who watched the Monkees show when I was a kid. I also became acquaintances with Louis Shelton, who played the opening guitar riff on the Monkees record. Louis was a guitarist that was also a member of the wrecking crew.
Two weeks ago I saw my first video of Mr. Daniel's sing with a news caster.(can't remember which one)He sang an original song and I was floored, I haven't seen him since he was driving a dog!😂This is blowing me away, he's really awesome.

Father and son is Jeff wasn't acting he could have been doing this life's work. Jeff is very talented and apparently so is his son. I always love this song it was by The Monkees
You youngsters don't really feel this song as soldiers from my generation felt it. I look on some of the young fellows today and think back when I was 20 and leading 18-19 year old young men into battle. I don't know how well the majority of kids would do today, a lot of then seen like they are still finding their way in life! We knew what awaited us and grew up pretty quickly. At least those of us that went into uniform did. Those who dodged the draft, I don't think ever really grew up. I talked to a guy my age who actually said, " I guess I should have gone to Vietnam back then!". I said ,yea, you should have.
Pleasantly surprised. Very enjoyable performance of a good song. In the 60's and 70's it was all about the song. Think about it: if not for their songs would the Beatles have gone anywhere?
I LOVE how JD takes a back seat to his son .. and his playing.. truly reminds me of the old school front porch America used to have before the creeps moved in.. and you KNOW what I mean... those creeps that took a font porch jam and made it into an abomination of society. this is what America used to be,,,, a neighborhood jam where ALL could enjoy... and sing along... now ? puuuhhhlllleeezzzzzz
I just used the Google Lens app to look it up: It's called a "National Style 1 Tricore Resophonic Tenor Guitar." Never heard of such a thing, but it has a cool sound.

Seems like more than one of us fell down the Jeff Daniels Rabbit Hole after seeing him on Kelly’s show. So good.
Guilty! 😁

As a life long guitar player at the age of 75 I love Jeff Daniel’s playing. So great to have found him.

I never knew what this song was about, but I was only 10

That's a wonderful scene.

Are you referring to when he covered a Tom T. Hall song on the last episode of "The Newsroom," where he played a news anchor?
Always good to put the professional musician off to the side...

Is that a resonator banjo?!?! That's awesome - I hadn't seen that before.
I'd like to see an all-actors band: Jeff Daniels, Steve Martin, Gary Sinise, Kevin Bacon. Who else?
Jeff Bridges
Johnny Depp
Jetemy Renner plays piano and sings really well.
Jeff Goldblum piano and I believe Richard Gere piano and guitar classically trained.
Steven Van Zandt - if Bruce would let him show up :)
The beginning sounded like they could have went into ’Goin’ To California’ by Zeppelin. 😊
Funny, I thought the same thing.....🙂
The folksmen would be proud
Gotta do something in all that down time on a set.
Louie Shelton guitar work❤

Niel Diamond wrote this and most of the Monkeees songs
I thought it was Boyce and Hart that wrote it?
