You can outfit a boat with triple 400r outboards for under 100 grand. A pair of these cost over 150 grand! If you passed 3rd grade math, you would understand that my original comment was saying how stupid this 600hp outboard is!
How about some civilized conversation? A 450r runs ~$55k and they seem to sell fairly well at only 50 hp more than a 400, which costs much less. The great thing about a free market economy. If you don’t think it is a value, don’t but it. Also doesn’t seem to make sense to price a 300 hp outboard compared to a 400hp outboard so it doesn’t seem logical to compare a 400 hp to a 600hp. Options in the market are a good thing. I hope people that find an application and value in a 600 Verado enjoy them!
The only problem that I would have is that I like to see the engine angle so I know where it’s angled just by looking at it
If your putting 600hp Mercs on your boat you'll have the extra budget for a joystick system that allows you to dock without an issue.

Development, manufacturing, facilities, and unforseen cost overruns are all an investment that will be, must be actually recovered or Mercury won't be with us long. Those who do venture into tweaking camshaft profiles head work, tunes even supercharging is inevitable surely Mercury Marine designed this Power plant for different levels of performance.... But reliability is everything or this is a failed project. The engines cost should fall as time goes on. But will never be inexpensive. Into automobile pricing for comparison 77k for 600 merc. Entire drive train and steering function. Big Blocks from any of the Big 3 would need to be built to the hilt and at higher engine stresses. $25,000 then your trans 6k +, drive line, rear end all the way to back tires. Then throw in the steering system of the car......you are kissing $50,000. If unfortunately you experience mechanical failure in a car or truck..... you can call or walk for help. yeah the 2.5l can got 450 hp, CRT makes 2.5L, 3.5L and 4.0L with latter going to over 650 hp. So 2 4l CRT's mounted together makes a 8L 2 stroke v12. somehow the block and cranks are mounted or welded together. the most modular 2 stroke ever is detroit diesel as the v6 and v8 blocks can be mounted together along with the crankshafts couple together, ie 2 8v92 make a 16v92, i got a silver 8v92 out back and a omc small block 4L v8 johnson side oiler v8. Now since the merc's ans CRT v6's 2 stroke are 60 deg block a mini napier deltic like OP 2 stroke could be formed from 3 v6 billet Al blocks! A 3.2 stroke 300sx in 3160cc and 3 of the could for a 9,480 9.48L mini deltic 2 stroke OP engine with custom ductile iron uni-flow ported liners! this 2 stroke would look like hell hanging off the transom but would gine around 990 hp a piece (330hp * 3). the sound would be insane!

They need to build a W formation engine to cut that weight back for us crazy guys and gals that want big power on a small boat. Or another thought: Have you ever considered a verticle mounted wankle engine? Power to weight ratio of a 2 stroke, Efficency of a 4 stroke.
Wankels didn’t have “all” of the efficiency of a four stroke. They never had the combustion efficiency for emissions or fuel economy standards.
@@petersouthernboy6327 I know that was a bit of a stretch, but my thoughts actually were that they would be efficient enough for outboard use. That the standards for an outboard would be less than the standards of an auto. Secondly with all the advanements in metallurgy and sealing materials, The word is that wankles have become much better than ever. In any event, I would love to see them used/tried in outboard production.
@@teresapeabody2746 - there’s a Wankel kart engine made by the German firm Aixro. It’s very cool and powerful but it doesn’t fit into any competition class that I know of. The original Wankel rotary in the Mazda’s were getting 17mpg City / 20mpg highway in small cars - so as you can see they aren’t as efficient as modern four strokes.
@@teresapeabody2746 - the combustion chamber for the Wankel moves - it’s part of the rotor lobe! This long, thin, moving combustion chamber could never completely burn all the fuel - Mazda tried a second, trailing spark plug but it only partially improved the combustion. The second problem with the rotary are the apex seals. You’re right - ceramic seals are an improvement. But in order to get them to last; Mazda had to resort to injecting motor oil directly into the combustion chamber. This oil burning caused the engine to build up carbon over time. It also killed emissions.

It’s a very small number of people that will pay twice the price for a diesel.
