It is encouraging to learn of more Audiologists who are demonstrating knowledge of... and competence in treating Tinnitus. The field of audiology is perhaps finally “getting up to speed” with this disorder that affects as many as 15% of the population. And is the number one disability among military veterans.

I genuinely lost all desire to live due to tinnitus. They only time I don’t hear it is when I first wake up, I don’t see how I’m going to continue another 22 years with this. My life feels over and I’m crushed.

I hope you can find some help. I’ve had it for decades and it is always between a 6-10 depending on the day and always there. Mine is a hissing with intermittent ringing. I found that Ibuprofen makes it so much worse and Tylenol also makes it worse. It’s always there and I think over time, I’ve learned to sort of ignore it, It’s hardest at night because I sleep with the tV on to mask it (so I’m listening to TV and not the hissing) but the light bothers me. I hope you can figure a way to cope so you don’t feel so hopeless.

Another great episode with an Audiologist who also experiences Tinnitus (such as Dr. Thompson himself). The most comforting and reassuring part for me was when Rachael said, "To be able to say (to her patients), yup, mine changes all of the time." Knowing your not alone in experiencing random fluctuations of Tinnitus helps greatly.

I had high pitched tinnitus in 2016. Increased to very high volume during high anxiety period. I played pink noise in my earbuds every night. After a while I forgot I had tinnitus. After a while it might bother me. But it did go "away". I also had started running and exercising as a natural course of being healthy.
I recently had an ear infection and it's started again. This time quite a bit worse with a blocked ear.
HOWEVER. I learned that I was always in fight or flight mode and that increased the tinnitus sound
I started taking cold showers and that would change my nervous system to calm down and my perception of the tinnitus was not as "scary" , but just a noise.
There is more to the story but we have alot of influence over this stuff.
Try this next time you get anxious and frustrated. Put your head under very cold water and see how you feel. It can help you yo control how your body reacts to stress and start to lower the noise, the anxiety and the panic.

LOVE THIS ! Thank YOU. I saw the episode w/ dr. On the 3 subtypes - LOVED that & this young lady has amazing perspective in all ways. I have the neck/traps tightness.. work w/ pers. trainer but everything I do physically (yoga - planks, flow etc.. along w/ strength training) brings on neck/traps/jaw pain .. it’s ALL interrelated … I sometimes get excruciating pain JUST below/in front of my ear lobe - have found stretches to do that help, also NECK POSITION - chin tucked & NOT downward position for iPad/iPhone - neck load. ALL of this I’ve researched myself … I also had LOUD NOISE for YEARS from my dig in the car - kept her in crate in hatch b/c barking was SO loud when we’d go to park or whatever … her excitement level was crazy. I had a feeling at the time it could affect my hearing in future 🥴 in the same (left) ear … LIFE happens. I hear it now really loud b/c I’m concentrating/talking about but my personal growth has been about eating well, meditation, relaxation, hiking in nature, kayaking etc .. overcoming childhood trauma… letting go of expectations & outcomes. This has all helped me to live w/ it, stay healthy in every way, enjoy life, meditate .. focus on positive - WHAT WD FOCUS ON EXPANDS, noise, physical or emotional .. 💪❣️

Loved this podcast, as my tinnitus mostly in my left ear started in the Spring out of nowhere like many others. It is a come and go type of tinnitus, where I have it for a day or two and don't have it for a day or two. Stress is a huge factor, as well as my sleep positions. It usually isn't very loud most of the time like a 1 - 2 out of ten for severity but does spike here and there where it is slightly more annoying. In the beginning, sleep was a luxury, but now I sleep pretty well if I have it or not. Habituation is really the key. It is not perfect and it does annoy me when it returns after a couple days without it, but it is tolerable. I have normal hearing (tested), as the most likely cause is either from my sinuses or a TMD/neck issue. Going to see an allergist in the next couple of weeks and hopefully an ENT from there. Definitely would recommend if you have tinnitus and have normal hearing to try acupuncture, meditation, and a chiropractor, as each has helped. Also, see your dentist/periodontist to make sure it isn't a mouth/jaw issue too. Above all else keep up hope because I feel there will be either a cure or better treatment methods coming in the not-so-distant future. People like Dr. Ben Thompson and others do provide quality information. It is amazing to me the number of audiologists that have some form of tinnitus as well like Dr. Rachel Cook. My audiologist who did my hearing test also has it but told me straight out it is not my hearing that is causing it. Again looking for my own set of answers and has been quite the journey of self-discovery for me. Just know you are not alone...

I find that mine can be calm all day sometimes and then when I go to bed in the middle of the night I'll wake up and it's just terrible and there doesn't seem to be any reason for that I'm thinking maybe sleep position could be it what do you think any input on sleep position thanks for anything you can offer

I’m working with Lindsay at Valley ENT in Mesa. Helping me with hearing loss, but tinnitus is still there. I used Dr. Julie when first diagnosed in Colorado. Sound Therapy didn’t help. I have TMJ, a dentist nicked the nerve by my ear when replacing a crown, and I have a night guard. Husband is a lead singer in two oldies bands (noise levels). I’m an older gal and have had it since 2015. I hear locusts or cicadas and an occasional ringing in the ears. I feel like I’m beyond hope. But I’m hoping something will help this community. It’s an awful problem. Stay busy and otherwise distracted. That will keep it at least unnoticeable for a lot of the time. Thx for your attention to this new epidemic.

This was really encouraging for me, in two ways. Doctor Cook's situation is very similar to mine. I just about have a handle on my tinnitus but some days can be difficult. Its very positive and encouraging to hear an audiologist say confidently that she believes her tinnitus will continue to get better, which gives me hope that mine will too.
I also have a mild dip in the high frequencies so naturally I went down the hearing aid, sound therapy route. But I have problems with my neck and jaw. My neck is often stiff and I carry a lot of tension in my jaw. I saw an ENT who said he didn't find anything in his physical exam but the MRI showed I have a cerebella ectopia. He didn't think it was causing my tinnitus. But now I think it might be worth exploring that further so I'm going to ask for a referral from my doctor and hopefully get that fixed.
I mentioned my jaw. I carry a lot of tension there and often the bones in my ears crack when I bite down, so i think that is worth looking into as well. Perhaps one of the doctors can suggest what type of specialist I should see. I'm thinking I can see an orthodontist, maybe they can tell me what might be causing the cracking.
Thank you again very much. It was a really, really positive video.

Exercise make a HUGE difference. Especially compound exercises, squats, pull ups, chin ups, shoulder lifts etc.
For me, it seems to not work immediately after but a few days later it’s a huge difference.
When the body gets used to the exercise it’s gonna cause all the muscle tension to relax and loosen. So do exercise three days a week.

Yes. Absolutely. I had eustachian tube obstruction on my right side, leading me to the loss of hearing "bass" in my right ear. Then I was referred to a "TMJ dentist", who ended up dislocating my jaw, leading to tinnitus and hearing loss in my left ear. Apparently it's called "somatic tinnitus due to cochlear synaptic hearing loss". Good news: Susan Shore's device may help. I'm also hoping that you are tracking the development of BDNF and Neurotrophin treatments. My Neurotologist tried it on guinea pigs in my city, but said that the molecular weight of BDNF was too high to diffuse through the round window, so it must be injected directly through it, otherwise no results will be see. I also have a "mild" hearing loss in the normal range in my left ear, but to me, it's immense. Now, both eustachian tube are swollen, so I have to lip read. My hearing improves slightly when the swelling goes down, but the tinnitus does not. It's too much. Posture, jaw, permanent damage. Everything plays a role. I'm now taking Citalopram so I don't go insane. My condition was stable for 10 years, thanks to only 2 weeks of Nortriptyline, but has gotten worse as of August 2020. The pandemic ruined my posture due to slouching at home. My tinnitus now distorts sounds and voices, so I only get peace when the room is silent.

When your guest talks about stress she is really talking about the autonomous nervous system which responds to nutrition, exercise, audio input, thoughts, and meditation via responses in cortisol level which is a reason why tinnitus can be louder in the early morning when cortisol levels rise naturally. There is also a genetic or epigenetic link in that there are differences between type A personalities and others linked to electrolyte balance with this type of personality is more likely to have stress-based tinnitus though it impacts all forms due to the role of electrolytes in the electrical signaling of nerves. This makes nutrition and epigenetics one of the more important factors in controlling tinnitus and in this respect involves the gut microbiota too.

I'm been experiencing tinnitus for over a month now. Tinnitus didn't start until after my 1st episode of vertigo subsided. When vertigo subsided; saw audiologist & ENT Dr - a week later vertigo stopped (yay!); 3-4 days AFTER seeing audiologist (got hearing test done) & saw ENT after seeing them tinnitus started & now it's been over a month. Level of stress has not changed from prior to having 1st vertigo episode. I've tried everything.... decreasing sodium intake on daily basis; listening to the tinnitus relief sounds; relaxation techniques; winding down at least 2 hours/ day. NOT to sound or present as a victim...i've reached the point of just being hopeless w having ANY kind of progress of tinnitus/ decrease of the high pitched ringing in my ear. Grateful tinnitus is only in one ear....it's constant 24/7; no moments of intermission where there's NO tinnitus. Any recommendations on how to decrease the intensity of the pitch or any type of meds or exercises??

Thank you for this video. I have had tinnitus 24/7 for decades and thought it was something i just had to deal with. I have moderate high frequency hearing loss and TMJ. Currently i am treating the hearing loss. For the most part, I’m aware of my tinnitus and it becomes bothersome when i have loud spikes that affects my ability to understand speech. I would be interested in reading the progressive tinnitus management handbook but can’t seem to find the correct link online. Could you please provide which link you are referring to? Thanks again

This has been very helpful..will definitely check out the Progressive Tinnitus Management handbook. My tinnitus started after a pain on the right side of my head in March of 2020( right when the first cases of Covid started in my country) that progressed to an "ear ,nose ,throat & eventually chest infection " since then I have had a multitude of tests including several blood tests , ear cleaning (by a super loud & invasive machine, audiology tests ,x-rays & an M.R.I but am being told " nothing is wrong " it's been nearly 2 years & it's getting progressively worse..most of the time I can't even sleep because the pitch is so high & loud. ENT doctors have all but washed their hands of me & I don't know what to do. In having said that ,I have noticed pain in my TMJ region & neck & upper thoracic spine ..again ,x-rays show nothing 🤷

I did, however notice some random ringing in the same ear in addition to the hissing but can’t really decide if it had anything to do with my vaccines. I hope that yours will be temporary. About 2.5 months ago out of nowhere, I woke up one morning with ringing in my ears, mostly my left, and very dull hearing. 2 day later it was very loud ringing, and almost no hearing in my left ear. After many visits to many drs I was told that it was a viral infection that could have been treated with prednisone in the first 4 weeks bit if after that it would not be effective. They finally tried that but at week 5 with no results. Audiology results show about 15 % left in my left ear and 65% in my right.. but they said that I probably already had hearing loss but never knew it.. I am at such a loss not, I am dizzy AF as soon as I stand up, like I am on a rocking boat.. and limited sleep due to the ringing, maybe 3 hrs a night. And the same as her the headaches are grueling daily... I am at such a loss!

Some days go by better, bit for the most part the ringing is borderline unbearable. The dizziness comes and goes with no rhyme or reason. I have come to notice if I move my eyes before I move my head there is less dizziness like when I am driving and come to stop signs. Same thing as far as meds go, I am on diazepam which I guess is suppose to calm me down. Then I take 2 or 3 otc sleep aid pills. But if I wake up too soon in the night there is little chance to fall back to sleep.

Then they handed me my hat and showed me the door. I've had this for a long time. There are no level 2 days or 3 days. it's constant unless I'm standing next to a freeway the level is constant, very loud, very disruptive. Nobody ever diagnosed me with any of those three categories so I don't know which one I am. I have horrible high level hissing in my right ear. I have had it for decades. I have severe TMJ and so I do believe that this might be related but I have it in both sides of my jaw but the tinnitus is predominantly in my right ear. I am trying to figure out who to go see about it but most of these videos basically say there is nothing more to do about it. I think stress exacerbates it but it is always there. Plus many doctors who look in my ears say the same thing - ‘wow, you have lots of scaring on your eardrums’ and this is due to numerous ear infections as a child. I wonder if this played into it. I have a hobby that I love that helps with stress but seriously I just stop thinking about the hissing but it is still there,.

I am a 67 year old man who drove truck for 30 years. I have had tinnitus for 2 years, coinciding with my retirement from work. Hearing is good, it just started after I developed pre-diabetes and is mostly left side. I've been on a keto/ low carb lifestyle for a year, lost 52 lbs and feel great. The tinnitus persists but I now regard it as an old friend, to the extent that silence now seems foreign to me. Vlogs such as yours are helpful, but confirm my feelings that modern medicine doesn't have a frickin' clue about nutrition or real human health. The road to hell IS paved with good intentions, sponsored by Big Pharma..

Obviously there are huge improvements in things like surgery, pregnancy, treatments, drugs and so forth but overall there’s still so many maladies that have no solution. Yes it seems both covid and the vaccines are causing so many strange symptoms. My son is not getting the shot as for kids the benefits are negligible after a cost benefit analysis based on the available data. Since the vaccines don't stem the spread of Omicron at all the social responsibility argument is out the window. in my case, I tried to take sleeping pill only at alternate nights.. this way, one night went into struggling to habituated and second night to cover up the pending sleep.. slowly, I started getting the sleep on the nights when i didnt take medicine..ot reduced to once in 3 days, later to once in 4 days, finally I left sleeping pills...now, I haven't taken any sleeping pill over 3 months in my 6 month journey..
