Now I wish this team should create a game with the spirit of Journey and ABZU, but in space! Imagine a game with the same vibe of the A Space Odisey ending? Perfection.
Yes, nothing like No Man Sky, just a short, but very transcendental experience like Journey and ABZU. Actually, I think it kinda sucks that games these days with a outer space setting (like No Man Sky) does nothing special in that regard, just ask the player to seek resources or encounter with strange creatures to say they are alien, but not try to produce the mysterious aspect of the universe in a way that captivate some grandiose emotion in the player like transcendence or even fear.
@@WAR3600 one question.... what would be the objective or goal in this idea of yours (I'm not saying I don't like it, I think its a wonderful idea...) It just needs something that tells you on what you have to do: (like in journey: you have to reach the top of this mountain, or ABZU: you have to restore the ocean to its former glory) Objective idea: you have to get these mystical artifacts that can help stop a meteorite from destroying a planet...or something like that

My favourite part of Journey was the frozen end. I had been playing with someone else for about 20 minutes I think, and we were keeping each other warm with the speak function. They collapsed, then I took two more steps and collapsed as well. And then it leaves you there for a while. And I was like, whoa.
One of the most beautiful features about Journey, in my opinion, was the way it matched you randomly with another anonymous but real player to work together despite having no method of communication besides a chime noise and basic body language. Working together, traveling together, helping each other on your journey... It really creates a special bond, and an unforgettable experience that makes each playthrough unique and memorable.
This video is wonderful. No bad marks, no whiney criticism. Just kind soft words about two wonderful pieces of art we call games. I have yet to get my hands on Journey, but by now, I've played through Abzu at least 15 times over. I love the sea and all its life, the desert and its hidden majesty, and I also love a good open world game that has tons to explore. Its the freedom that draws me to masterpieces like these. The soundtracks could be played forever and never get tired out. Always a high replayability value with games like these. That's why there could never be other games like Journey and Abzu.
This helped me better understand why I love Abzu, and actually swimming around with the movement mechanics (especially the somersault charge) is very satisfying.
That's the kind of poetic games I like. No text prompts, no qtes, no markers or minimap. Just subtle imagery that helps you to move forward. I need more games like that
Journey is one of my favorite games of all time, and while I do absolutely love Abzu, I think the mechanics worked against it at points. One of the great things about Journey is how natural movement felt, whether it was gliding down hills, soaring, etc. The only time movement was a hassle was when it was intentionally so, on the frozen mountain. Meanwhile, I feel like the Abzu didn't feel as natural. I often found myself fighting the controls, which didn't seem to handle as well as I'd want them to. It feels like navigating the 3D plane wasn't structured as well as it could've been (something a 3D all-underwater game is of course going to struggle with). When I started playing Journey, I couldn't bring myself to ever put it down, finishing the whole thing in one sitting. I can't say the same for Abzu, which I played about halfway through, but then took a break from due to the sometimes frustrating controls in addition to the way the pace seems to feel a bit too repetitive around halfway. Still, Abzu's an incredible game, and shared man of the traits I loved about Journey. With just those little tweaks to the basic gameplay it could've been a top 10 game for me.
Yeah, I think it has a lot of its struggles due to purely being an underwater game, they never feel as natural as a regular game :/ Also, I was really hoping you were going to say "and while I do ABZU-lutely love Abzu..." but you didn't :(
Oh man, what a golden missed pun D: One of the big indies that won me over this summer was Inside (the sort-of spiritual successor to Limbo). It's right up there with Journey and Abzu when it comes to mood and atmosphere portrayed through art style. Also, I loved this video, and I really hope to see more like this.
Journey, while not one of my favorite games, is a game I can definitely say is one of the best games I've played. Everything about it is beautiful. The controls feel amazing and the soundtrack is phenomenal. I've 100% the game and the reward is well worth it. To anyone in the comments thinking about getting this, this is one of the best games ever made, and I can definitely recommend it. Great job with the video!
What are your thoughts on Journey or ABZU? Some people say they are too short for their price, but they are no doubt meaningful experiences. What do you think?
I can't speak for Abzu, but I'd pay for Journey five times over. There is no greater example of an artistic masterpiece in gaming, that much I am sure of.
Cool video! It took me a while to realize that I loved ABZU. I was half convinced until I met whales and jumped to the moon in their company. It just blew my mind... If only for this moment, I'm glad of the money spent. But then again, we should all cease to measure game by their duration/price ratio. That's an obsolete metrics. P.S: I'd love to do Journey but lack the playstation.
I have only played Journey so far. But what an incredible experience that is. Deeply emotional, almost mystical. You (snomaN) could probably do a whole video about the multiplayer aspect alone. Meeting anonymous strangers and travelling along with them for a while, with no defined purpose and communicating through movement alone, is a unique aspect of the game. It is especially fascinating to see the player-IDs in the end. This is when you realize that that special friend you met was actually several different people...I have shown Journey to several non-gamers as a example of what gaming can be. Each time we've ended up taking the entire journey together. How can you not? Everything in the video about the incredible enviromental design is spot on. And no, Journey is not too short. Whatever the medium, I will choose a great story over a long story any day. Can speak for Abzu, but it looks awesome. Thank you for promoting this type of games, they deserve it.
At the time I played Journey, my mind was waiting for a more ordinary, and less artistic experience, thank goodness I was wrong, because the game was literally the best I have seen in a long time. The act of transcendentalism was the point where you really understand the background of your Journey and it leads you to see it differently once you start over. What I could highlight from ABZU is that they have a very similar environment, however it did not end up catching me as much as Journey
You could have talk more about the music, which is one of the most important aspects, at least in Journey. Few times I've seen how well can music fit into the gameplay itself. Both game's music are made by the same guy.
@@PopsiCOLE Abzu is a little off about pacing, but had some great moments, maybe I could said that had less impact than journey, but yes I enjoyed overall, had some memorable parts...
For some reason ABZU just didn't click for me the same way Journey did. Journey almost made me tear up, while ABZU, even though it had its wow moments, never accomplished the same thing for me. I didn't care one bit about the humanoid/robot/guy that I played as, and the Zen mode thing made me dettach even more from the experience. It was like, this really immersion breaking feeling that felt like I was watching a sea life documentary on discovery channel more than enjoying a journey. Besides, the fact that most of your companions are the tiny robots made it so I didn't get as attached to them as I did with the carpets or other players in Journey. Bear with me with the carpets thing, since it may sound ridiculous but, at least for me, carpets being the innanimate objects they are, being given life and communicating with the player gave them a kind of conscious feeling, but the robots in ABZU don't have this quality since you sorta expect them to do what you tell them because they're robots. It just doesn't feel as organic, pun intended.
I played both these games with one of my friends on his PS4 and it jusr blew our minds, by the end, I wasn't sure wether to classify these as video games, or cinematic masterpieces.
"Setting-wise, these two games couldn't be further apart." But, according to America (the band) in their song "A Horse With no Name', "The ocean is a desert with its life underground" Maybe they aren't so different afterall.
Nope sir, Journey and Abzu are not from the same creators. Abzu's art director Matt Nava was indeed a member of thatgamecompagny's crew, but the studio dispersed. Journey's game designer Jenova Chen, didn't work on Abzu. in my opinion, Abzu's team copied many aspects from journey without truely knowing what they wanted to achieve. So, of course Abzu is great, but it lacks the subtile coherence between mechanics and emotions that Jenova Chen crafted for journey.
Everytime my travelers arrives to the golden sands, lateral view speedrun, I cry. It hurts something like that doesn't exist in real life. Everytime my traveler collapses on Deathfrost Mountain, I cry. It hurts. Everytime my traveler revives, I cry. It's joy but it hurts in real life, death is final. I didn't know Abzu was made by the same team! I will purchase next.
In my opinion, Journey seems better to me, which in addition to being a relaxing and beautiful game, is exciting, the message feels powerful, it has some epic scenes and although both video games are out of the ordinary, I see that Journey is more ingenious in creating fantastic beings and the world itself. And not to mention his orchestras, especially Journey's is at the level of a cinematography.
I'm somewhat surprised you didn't mention the water parallels in Journey! When you fly, you seem to be swimming through the air. And a lot of the cloth creatures you encounter resemble schools of fish, dolphins, and whales.
I wanted to like Abzu. I really did. But the more I played it the more it bothered me that it was basically trying to be Journey, play by play with every story beat. Which would have been fine, had it not been done before (and better). Granted, Journey blew me away and really spoke to me. Abzu was pretty but just felt unnecessary. It's like they wanted to get all the same feels, but not in a way that was unique or compelling. I felt it lacked focus. I'd call it Journey 1.5

I love Abzu, I always play it when I want to visit a beautiful place where there is harmony,it really soothes me. I really have to try Journey next,it looks amazing too
Ok... I need some help. There has been two glitches on my ABZU. First is that in the 3rd area I saw a ray... Outside of the boundries. I took a quick picture and moved on. The second glitch was a game over glitch. Basically I was playing through again and I had just picked it up to play. I got to the place where the shark eats one of your buddies and I wasn't paying attention. But when I looked back I still had all three. BUT THE CAMERA WASN'T MOVING. I took some pictures and a video for proof. I then reset. Can anyone explain what's happening?
While I loved the setting and art style of Abzu, I felt that it was a carbon copy of Journey with the story taken from Flower. Abzu had everything Journey had, but less good. The wordless noise you can make sounded great and harmonized well with the music in Journey, but sounded rough and unpleasant in Abzu. Abzu also didn't have the fantastic multiplayer aspect that Journey had where you could come into contact with a real human and help each other on your journey without ever speaking. There just wasn't much creativity in Abzu.
Seeing Journey mentioned always kind of makes me sad because I never got that emotional connection with it. I thought it was ridiculously pretty when I played it, and I thought the freezing being mechanically enforced was a really nice touch, but all of my feelings regarding the game were surprisingly clinical rather than emotional. I'll probably get Abzu on sale at some point to see what interesting new ideas they might have put in there, but I'm not really looking forward to playing it.
Abzu was more enjoyable to me than Journey. The mechanics were just as solid but the attention to detail and love for nature and sea life puts Abzu over the top for me. It's less fantastical in most ways compared to Journey, and that gave it an even more special feeling to me, to be able to create such a powerful experience without relying on completely fantastical elements.
Now I wish that this team would make a game in Journey and Abzu style but we need the sky! like flying in the clouds with the birds and after the space! I would really like to play a game like that
snomaN Gaming because Journey looks like Johnny. his reviews start with "Johnny vs. [insert game]" So for this video I thought it said "Johnny vs. ABZU"
I love you boo and binge watched basically your whole channel but plzplz do put spoiler warnings ah I couldn't finish this video because of it just a little: "will talk abt the endings, major spoiler warning" would do, I'm saying because in your other vids you don't always tackle heads-on the complete plots :< thx ~
I heard that this multiplayer is the best way to play the game because you can be paired with someone much more experienced than you who will help you discover new secrets and act like he was your elder.
I think that visually abzu was more appealing to me, the whales part and the city were specially mind blowing, but gameplay and story wise journey is much more interesting. Abzu takes a LOT of elements from journey and sometimes and feels like you are playing essentially the same game. Abzu missed something that should've made it completly unique like journey had it's flight and scarf pieces. The collectables of abzu didn't add anything to your character so there was next to no encouragement to get the shells
snomaN Gaming When saying "VS" it's usually when trying to find the best between two things, in your video you compared between the two but didn't try to come to a conclution on which game is better. (btw, It's the second time you answered to a comment of mine :D)
At least for my channel, the vs series has always just been about comparison, not competition, but if I had to choose which I liked better...probably Journey?
I agree, but 2D games are a lot less complex than 3D ones, and even many older games still have tutorials or text boxes, this has absolutely no words at all
snomaN Gaming , actually things like liepleurodons and ichthyosaurs are classified as undersea reptiles. Though at some point a dinosaur may have crossed some body of water in some way or another, what we call dinosaurs were strictly land-dwelling creatures.
this is absolutely nitpicking, but plesiosaurs aren't dinosaurs - they're more closely related to turtles! there are no known truly aquatic dinosaurs, but penguins are a modern example of semi-aquatic dinosaurs
I love Journey, it's in my top 5, or at least top 10. Unfortunately i HATE underwater levels in every game (and movies) so I think I'll pass on that one. :/
Yeah it's interesting, like I thought about that. Water levels are normally awful, and most people hate them. So it's a big undertaking to make a completely underwater game, but they pull it off! It makes water levels enjoyable :)
Nice video, as always! I have to say, as much as I liked Journey, I didn´t feel any attachement to the character, or any real interest in the story. It was intriguing going through the ruins, but that was more because I wondered what had happenedthan anything else. My only drive to reach the mountaintop was because there wasn´t anything else to do, everything was railroaded. Well, that, and wanting to see what exactly happened. I don't know, I have mixed feelings towards Journey. As for the character, I couldn´t relate to it. It didn't have a personality, but it wasn't an avatar either, so the moutain scene was just... empty. Admittedly, I have trouble relating to most characters in videogames, so that may just be me. And as for Abzu... I haven't played it yet, but it seems a bit samey as Journey. Maybe I'm wrong though.
Just a reminder: If you hate Journey (I did), play Abzu. You'll get the big climactic emotional ending everyone pretends Journey has, better music, STUNNING visuals and set pieces, super fun movement that doesn't involve dragging ass through sand and snow at 0.2mph. Journey put me to sleep and I tried to hard to love it, but it's boring AF. Abzu will actually entertain you while also doing all the cool stuff Journey pretends it's doing. If you love Journey: Congrats. I'm jealous. Genuinely wanted to enjoy it but it was boring visually, narratively, and gameplay-wise. Abzu's stunning visuals and actually comprehensible story make up for its lack of gameplay, plus the swimming is amazing. (Yes, I do comprehend Journey's story. The difference is it's bad, boring, and the game doesn't give you a single reason to care about these dumb scarf people and their near-colorless world.)
At all honesty all of these comments are fucking pathetic. Why are you people comparing which one is better between 2 games with 2 *incredibly different game mechanics?* They are not the same. And no, ABZU is not a copy of Journey or flower. It actually has a personality in all of its own. Sure, thatgamecompany titles may have inspired ABZU, but that by no means is a cheap knock off. Damn people, stop comparing apples with oranges. Both games are very, very different. People these days are so ignorant.
Now I wish this team should create a game with the spirit of Journey and ABZU, but in space! Imagine a game with the same vibe of the A Space Odisey ending? Perfection.

Actually, the more times you play journey finish journey, the more runes you get on your clothing/scarf
Journey: Ground
ABZU: Water
Sky Cildren Of The Light: Sky
What will it be next...
thanks for the video, but way too many spoilers were used on Journey.
Are they connected in one way of another?
fantastic video
I always thought ABZU was the sequel to Journey.
It's basically a spiritual successor lol
Is the next one going to be in the sky or in space?
That would be cool! A flying in the sky/clouds Journey-like game would be incredible!
They’re making one called sky at the moment I’m pretty sure
Abzû is about the environment.
Journey is about Us.
Yeah, much like any game, it's not for everyone and people connect to different games for different reasons :/ And that's totally fine!
I would really like to play a game like that
play Sky Cildren Of The Light
Here i'am after playing the pathless to see if his going to make a video about it
The end of journey is similar at the end of sky children of lights, also the cape/wings and skiing in sand land
it's snow in sky tho
JOURNEY!!
I preferred journey’s gameplay especially the white robe but I prefer ABZU’s setting I just think that seeing all the animals is just so cool
i thought this was a SomecallmeJohnny video at first
lol I am not the only one
lol why is that?
snomaN Gaming because Journey looks like Johnny. his reviews start with "Johnny vs. [insert game]" So for this video I thought it said "Johnny vs. ABZU"
hahaha oh that's funny
I love you boo and binge watched basically your whole channel but plzplz do put spoiler warnings ah I couldn't finish this video because of it
just a little: "will talk abt the endings, major spoiler warning" would do, I'm saying because in your other vids you don't always tackle heads-on the complete plots :<
thx ~
Hope this time line gets GTP 2020.
There are no conflict when it comes with natural beauty.
For me it’s always journey but just because I played it first and it was amazing
Journey
Having multiplayer makes the game so much cooler
I heard that this multiplayer is the best way to play the game because you can be paired with someone much more experienced than you who will help you discover new secrets and act like he was your elder.
Yeah I never ended up playing the multiplayer, but I've definitely heard that makes the game so much better
I played Journey for an hour and got bored.
These artsy exploration games are definitely not for everyone.
I agree, definitely not for everyone!
Try it again in a few years!
0:17 fairly sure people telling stories with only sounds is very common... it’s called talking =.=
I like Abzu better...
...But only because I haven't played Journey yet.
Why did you put "VS" in the title?
Because the entire video is comparing the two? It's a series I do where I look at a game and its sequel/spiritual successor/DLC
snomaN Gaming When saying "VS" it's usually when trying to find the best between two things, in your video you compared between the two but didn't try to come to a conclution on which game is better.
(btw, It's the second time you answered to a comment of mine :D)
At least for my channel, the vs series has always just been about comparison, not competition, but if I had to choose which I liked better...probably Journey?
Abzu hits really hard on the pc.. or should i say heats
1:50 16 bit games did this all the time, i'm not sure why modern gaming lost this skill
I agree, but 2D games are a lot less complex than 3D ones, and even many older games still have tutorials or text boxes, this has absolutely no words at all
unassumption because of way points and hand holding
Journey > abzu
I love abzu
I loOOOo000000¤¤¤OoOvvvvvvVVVVEeEEEE JOURNEY
Both are great
dinosaurs didn't live underwater.
...plenty of them do
snomaN Gaming , actually things like liepleurodons and ichthyosaurs are classified as undersea reptiles. Though at some point a dinosaur may have crossed some body of water in some way or another, what we call dinosaurs were strictly land-dwelling creatures.
Im getting abzu on may 5 bday
this is absolutely nitpicking, but plesiosaurs aren't dinosaurs - they're more closely related to turtles!
there are no known truly aquatic dinosaurs, but penguins are a modern example of semi-aquatic dinosaurs
It makes water levels enjoyable :)
snomaN Gaming Thx for the reply. I'll check it out after I "worked" off some of my pile of shame.
Great content btw, keep it up!
THOSE AREN'T DINOSAURS THEY'RE PLESIOSAURS
-Saurs
Oh my God that Shrek
Yeah, I mean no doubt they are very simple games but it's the world that I get lost in (personally)
snomaN Gaming Oh, yeah, the world is fantastic, at least in Journey's case. It does make you want to explore.
Just finished Abzu. It doesn't come close to Journey
and i thought batman arkham knight had the best graphics ever i see this and i see the future
They both cool
Cool
ABZU
They both can also brake my graphics card hahahaha
ABZU!♡
Sky>>
imo abzu is just a try-hard journey
Spoilers much?
Lol I gave a spoiler warning at the beginning?
