Many thanks for asking. The exterior angle that one side makes with the adjoining side of any regular polygon is fixed and is equal to 360/(no. of sides in the polygon). For a square it is 360/4=90, for pentagon it is 360/5=72, for hexagon it is 360/6=60 and so on. One way is to keep drawing next side using exterior angle until you complete the polygon. Second way will be to draw one side and then one side on the two ends of this line using exterior angle. For the rest of the sides, you can take the help of compass and ruler as I did in this video.✔
A wonderful method for constructing for 5,6,8,9 sided polygons, but I was wondering how would it be possible to construct polygons with the number of sides that are not factors of 360 such as 7.
Thanks. Yes it will be a problem to draw the angle which is in fractions. You can still make the best guess using a protractor. The general method of drawing polygons also gives some minor errors.
Thanks a lot sir for all these tutorials. Plz lemme know are these 70 videos enough for my Engineering Drawing Course? I'm majoring in Aeronautics. And it will be helpful for me to get some advice from you. Thanks
Depends on the syllabus your university or institute is following. They cover the basics of ED syllabus in the 1st year. Please compare the topics in these videos with your own prescribed syllabus.✔
Base exterior angle method gives correct geometry. The regular method can also be used for engineering drawing. However, very minor error is possible. You should also be very skilled in drawing to avoid error while you are drawing lines, circles etc.✔👍
Sir 72deggry kaysay ho ja raha hi yh may bhi jaanta hu ki 360may 5 say bhaag duga to 72 aa jaayga laykin 360 kaysay aa raha hi pantagon kay ak angel ka maan kitana hota hi
Very good question. 360 degree comes because, you imagine you start from one side (say AB) and to reach the same side AB, tracing through all the sides, you have to effectively turn 360 degree. This you achieve by changing the direction 5 time 72 degree each time (for pentagon). 360 degree is fixed. If you have to make a hexagon (six sides) then you will be turning six times but each time only 60 degree. We can extend this explanation to a square where you need to turn only four times but 90 degree each time. And if you want to make an equilateral triangle, you turn only three times but by 120 degree each time. Which means, regardless of the geometry, since it is a closed shape, total angle involved to get back to the same side is always 360 degree. Depending upon the number of times you have to turn (which is same as the number of sides the geometry has) you divide 360 by that number to obtain the exterior angle. This concept will work for heptagon (seven sides), octagon (eight sides) etc as well but only for regular shape.
For each shape, we are completing 360 degree angle rotation as we change the orientation going from one side to the last side. This means, for pentagon, in five equal (exterior) angle change we are completing 360 degree and hence, each angle change is 360/5=72 degree. For hexagon, it is 6 times angular orientation change to complete 360 degree rotation and hence each exterior angle will be 360/6=60 degree. For square, it will be 360/4=90 degree. For equilateral angle triangle, each exterior angle will be 360/3=120 degree. It should apply to heptagon, octagon and others in the same way.
Find out in one of the comment below the video. Just calculate the new exterior angle. The exterior angle to use is 51.43 degree. It is difficult to draw but you can try!
This is the simplest and easiest way I found. Thank you.

Why we take exterior angle as 72
For any regular polygon, the exterior angle multiplied by the number of sides is 360 degree. This is fixed.

How to decide the angle
For each shape, we are completing 360 degree angle rotation as we change the orientation going from one side to the last side. This means, for pentagon, in five equal (exterior) angle change we are completing 360 degree and hence, each angle change is 360/5=72 degree. For hexagon, it is 6 times angular orientation change to complete 360 degree rotation and hence each exterior angle will be 360/6=60 degree. For square, it will be 360/4=90 degree. For equilateral angle triangle, each exterior angle will be 360/3=120 degree. It should apply to heptagon, octagon and others in the same way.
Many thanks. Straightforward tutorial, well explained.
