About the music thing: his point wasn't that American music is better than European music - he was saying that world's most popular genres like blues, jazz, rock, metal, pop, hip hop etc. all started in the US. The Beatles and Stones got their inspiration from American blues and rock musicians, Adele got her inspiration from American R&B singers, British grime got its inspiration from American rap etc.
Y'all missed the point he making on the music. He said every modern music STARTED in the US, not that we have better music or musicians. Rock, country, blues, rap, etc... all STARTED in the US.
@@donrainesoh nah I gotta give my white American brothers their credit for country, pop, and taking rock which was of course created by chuck berry and creating some amazing sub genre’s like metal, punk etc without whites rock wouldn’t have survived this long.
He mentioned some American "firsts" but missed (at least) two very important ones, that had effects the world over. Namly, the US was the first to achieve powered, control flight (Dec. 17, 1903) and put the first human on the moon (July 20, 1969)
Third…with Fords invention of the automotive assembly line, the US revolutionized mass production in manufacturing. It sped production and made it more cost effective.
Adele sings American style music. He didn't say that Americans have better musicians, which we do, then Europeans he said that modern music started in America.
Music: The narrator was correct. Just about every genre of popular music dating back to at least the early 1900s originated in the USA. Jazz, Blues, Ragtime, the Big Band sound, Swing, Pop, Rock, American Country, Western, Skiffle, Metal, and numerous others. If you're hearing it on the radio these days and it isn't some nation's traditional folk music, chances are it was devised in America. And yes, that includes Adele. She sings American style pop. Something I've always found highly amusing is that British singers for the most part drop their regional accents when they learn to sing professionally. Instead, they sound like Americans. Adele, for example, has a distinct Cockney accent when she talks, but when she sings she sounds like a person from the American Midwest. I have yet to hear of anyone from the US who sounds like they're from the English midlands when they sing. 😁 One of my pet peeves is the history thing. I can't even count the number of times that Europeans -- or Asians, for that matter -- have said that the USA barely has any history or culture. That's because they apparently have a mental block that prevents them from realizing that the American continents have been inhabited for somewhere between 30 to 50 thousand years and American history didn't start when Europeans settlers invaded. As for culture, those same people who superciliously proclaim that the USA only has culture it stole from them are probably doing so while wearing blue jeans and a t-shirt, while sipping on coca-cola and eating fried potatoes, pizza with tomato sauce, or maybe even a hamburger and following it up with a dish of ice cream as they listen to American style pop music. After which they may go watch an American movie while munching on popcorn and chocolate.
I already gave your comment a "like", but on a personal level I just wanted to applaud you on your inclusion of the word superciliously. And yes, I am that boring.
Having worked in retail for years, companies want you to greet everyone who comes through the door within 30 seconds, and to offer help throughout the shopping experience, and the major reason is to discourage shoplifting! And of course to up-sell!
The best thing America has over Europe is space. Good lord, my time spent in Italy, Germany, and The Netherlands really opened my eyes to this. On the train in Germany, you would be leaving one city, see a couple small farms go by, and then you're entering the next populated area. Everyone is so jammed together, there's no room to breath. You can be on the train here, and it will be a couple hours until the next stop.
He didn't say better, he said modern music was Started in the USA, which it was. There's plenty of great bands and groups all over the world as far as I'm concerned, but 'modern music', was born in the USA.
plus the uk enjoys the US market for music and movies only because they also speak english , very few other euro music or movies make it into the us mainstream
@@ΒΞΔΝ ...when did Disco die?...I listen to disco music alongside other genres...daily! Actually you may just be failing to recognize what disco music was/is...basically, disco is just funk music with strings added. If it doesn't have strings it's not disco it's funk, and both of them are sub-genres of R&B...so is Hip-Hop, and with the magic of R&B music all are interchangeable, as we so often see and hear! There was a backlash against it(Disco, I mean) in the 80's but that was mostly from people like todays MAGA folks, the same type mentality is what I'm saying, and they're the same ones that hate Hip-hop also!...but if you go to any club that has a dance floor, then you're in a Discotheque, and they're playing Disco music, per se.

Briggs is right about the music. Jazz began in the U.S., as did rock and now hip hop and rap. Along the way, you can add in blues, country, bluegrass, soul, funk, zydeco -- you name it. The UK pioneered, what, skiffle music? There is just no question that over the past 100 years, U.S. music has either dominated the world outright or influenced the fusion genres that came back to us through reggae, world music and even Latin styles. You have your K-pop, your J-pop, whatever. We invented pop to start with.
We moved to Brussels, Belgium for several years... and while I LOVED my time there.. I can say with certainty that Customer Service sucks! From buying furniture, beds, clothing, food, electronics, ETC!! It took us 3 weeks to get our mattresses! In the US it's same day delivery! And forget about trying to get help especially when buying electronics of any kind. Just my personal experience. (we had to buy everything)
It doesn’t matter what your preference is. Almost all modern music on most radio stations and streaming platforms globally is an outgrowth of American music styles. He’s not talking about who did it best; he’s talking about who did it first.
Years ago I worked at Target and one day I ran across two guys from England and we chatted for a couple of minutes. They said they came over to the US twice a year and stocked up on jeans to take back to England. The size and variety of jeans simply wasn't available in Europe then, don't know about now, so they made a considerable amount of money selling them when they got home.
Yes Cynthia, we have English relatives that visit twice a year. They ALWAYS bring two empty suitcases with them to shop and take home! Some stuff to keep, some to sell to help recoup their expenses (like Levi’s jeans, sunglasses, etc).
Haha. I like how you slipped in, right at the end, that it was about $. My initial assumption was that they just wanted to have enough pants for the next few years, and not have to pay so much. Realizing how silly that was, gave me a good chuckle. 🙂
That's because the quality of the denim isn't durable. Our Levi's and even the knockoffs sell for a pretty penny in Europe. Some dude in Finland offered me 200 USD for the Levi's I was wearing.
I was in Europe earlier this year, and was so shocked by some of this! We were in Paris, and my mom called me to say they had a Carhartt store in the mall. Blew my mind, since it’s something every man I knew growing up had as a jacket. And then we were in Copenhagen, and I saw Levi’s at the stores, which is another rather dated company in the US (still a staple for a certain older demo from the past), and the employee at a store told us how it’s all the rage in Europe now. As a Texan that grew up with Levi’s and Carhartt as a pastime that I relate to dads in America, it made me chuckle that it’s somehow “trendy” for Europeans. Loved it. 😂🥰
My German friends were shocked at how cheap jeans were in the states. I did not shop in Germany partly because the prices were so high but I also did not understand the sizing. They were also surprised by the price of cars and our choices of food. I did like their small boxes of milk. It did not have to be refrigerated until you opened it. I loved that.
In retail, approaching a customer and asking, "Hi! How can I help you today?" is part being polite but more importantly, an anti-theft procedure. By acknowledging everyone who comes in and seeing them face to face lowered shoplifting by nearly half back in the 1970's.
Yeah, but it's where you end up that matters. British bands like The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin definitely took it and ran with it. Also, there are incredible blues players from all over the planet, these days. Cheers to those who started it all, and to those who carry on the legacy. 🥂
The whole basis of music history in America stems from the African drumbeats and the Irish strings rhythm. You can hear it in old American folk and bluegrass.

Also reminded him that brits are known for their horrible cooking and asked him why, if America was so damn bad, we had so many Scots come over here after Bonnie Prince Charlie's failed revolution. One thing I've noticed about most Europeans who visit the U.S. and then go on to talk about how bad things are is they base their entire opinion of the country on their experience in one city or at best, one state. It would be like me visiting Berlin and having a bad experience then telling everyone how bad Europe sucks. (For the record, I've never been to Germany and came up with Berlin by asking my bf to name a European city and used his answer for the example.) I'm sure many people who have only bad things to say about Europe do the same. In bigger cities your experience can vary quite a bit by what part of the city you visit. This is true pretty much everywhere. The fact is you can't really form an accurate opinion of such large and diverse places like the United States or Europe without visiting many times and going to different states or countries or spending at least a couple of months traveling around to see as many places and meet as many people as you can. I'm an American who has been to 42 of our 50 states and I still come across things in some towns on road trips that are surprising to me but completely normal to the locals.
The thing that drives me crazy is that the people who complain about the US getting involved in other countries conflicts, are the same ones who complain when we don't. I hate to bust your guys’ bubble but he is 100% correct about the music and it applies to pretty much all pop culture. The cultural melting pot of the US created pretty much every form of entertainment in the world that has dominated all of pop culture globally. This is especially true in music since the earliest days of the 20th century but the foundations of it go back to the early 19th century. The mixture of classical and folk European music with African rhythms created every form of mass popular music for the last 100 plus years.
The key here is the cultural melting pot and you have to give homage to where it came from. You also have to realize history is told from those who wrote it and is way more complicated then giving credit to Europe and African beats. Start with the origins of the banjo and the have fun down that rabbit hole. And if you really want a mind f*ck then go look at how inaccurate your maps are. Africa is 14 times the size of Greenland but they are the same size on the map. Most European countries represented themselves bigger and it’s just as false as the music history you think you know.

Area and financial class are key determining factors. I've lived in multiple areas as a kid and seen how others had to grow up and lived. Basic example is how a few public parks i played at with friends would be closed when drugs and needles were found with homeless drug addicts being a real issue. Then after moving to a "nicer" middle class area when my dad got a new job we had no similar issues. There were public evens and celebrations without the fear of someone assaulting or taking your kid.

One thing for me in the USA about shopping is how easy it is to find things. I now get things delivered in 1.5 - 3 hours on Amazon and it's really nice. If I want to shop in person, then I can generally know where to get something, even if I'm travelling in another part of the country, then I can usually know where to go (Home improvement: Home Depot, Lowes, Menards // General shopping: Walmart, Target // car related: O'Reilly, Auto Zone // Pharmacy: Walgreens, CVS). Those stores are generally really big, so I wouldn't have to go to a bunch of stores to find what I need.

I’m a music teacher. I just want to say that modern music is the way it is today because of jazz. If jazz didn’t exist, rock music wouldn’t exist and every pop style in America except country… wouldn’t exist. So if you enjoy hip-hop, rap, pop, even edm (although there’s a strong European influence..), or even older styles like disco or soul… it ALL can trace its roots to jazz or rock n roll (which came from jazz.) If it wasn’t for jazz, we’d still be listening to symphonies for fun.
There is no way to know what would have happened if jazz didn't exist. I find it unlikely that something else wouldn't have come about that serves as the basis for derivatives and we would presently be stuck with symphonies. We might not have rock, pop, etc. exactly as we know it, but we would still likely have a bunch of alternatives via some path. Some people would probably like those alternatives more than those that exist today and some other people would like them less. I would extend this to many things in any part of life that have been derivatives of previous inventions. With billions of people on the planet developments are inevitable.
@@brianh6 that’s fair! But you have to admit we more than likely wouldn’t have had the “band” format we do now with guitars and drums being the core. It would more than likely be something else. Perhaps even musicals would be the dominant popular style (because opera was really big around the turn of the century 1899-1900.)

When European people talk about the USA they mostly talk about how bad our education system is and guns. Yes, most of that is true but there’s a reason why we have some of the best Universities and colleges in the world. Yes guns is a problem but if you are a drug dealer you are in a higher risk of getting killed. Normal people don’t have manny issues with guns. There’s not a country in the world that doesn’t have any problems.
The education comparison has annoyed me for decades. When we report to the world our testing results, we have a "Failing" line of a grade of 70. In America anything below 70 is considered "Failing." In Europe, the "Failing" line is 50 (!!). Of course it looks like our scores are lower because the US and Europe are reporting data differently. How would Europe stack up needing a 70 to pass? How would the US stack up needing just a 50 to pass? The data points need to be the same for an accurate comparison.

When it comes to music... ALOT of my preferences came from Europe. However, the video is mainly talking about the genesis of modern music has been predominantly from the US and then Europe (Mainly Britain and Ireland) being heavily influenced by the US. Rock n Roll, Country, Punk, R&B, Alternative, Hip Hop and Jazz all came from the US. (Not sure on Electronic). As stated, I much prefer what came out of England/Ireland later, but that all stemmed from what started in the US. Quality is more subjective and preferences.

Couple thoughts from someone who has American roots that date back to 1740's. America has been the most stabilizing entity in the history of the world. Are we perfect no but frankly who else do you want as the superpower trying to keep peace and allowing global commerce to happen? Russia? China? Nope. The knobels park does have one original coaster and that’s the bobsleigh coaster at the front of the park. Knotts berry farm started as a literal berry farm but the owners wanting a little more business added various rides and things to do over time that the berry farm only operated as a food provider to the park itself. Canada has actually produced some great musicians but their success is largely due to the American radio marketplace. Even British bands made it big because of their record sales here. But you could argue that rock in general tends to have an either African tribal beat to it or a military drum beat in some of it. So Africans created the tribal beat and Europe created the battle march. So if we're going back to origins and not distinguishing between rock and metal, where does that leave your theory about where America got rock from? I am no expert on economics and taxes, but it seems to me that when we compare taxes from one country to another it is like comparing apples to oranges. My guess is that people in many of those countries with high taxes don't have to go into deep debt or go bankrupt to have a child or to deal with a major illness. The U.S. may have a low federal tax rate, comparatively, but we don't have the safety nets, and since the '80s, the "middle class" has sunk further and further into debt, while the excessively wealthy have paid less and less taxes.
The "rock" in the Bering Sea near Alaska is Attu Island. It was, and is, American soil. "We didn't even try to chase them out" is BS. In the Battle of Attu, the US suffered 549 dead and 1,148 wounded, while the Japanese suffered over 2,800 dead.
I'm pretty sure that part of what the UN considers taxes is the all important sales tax and while we definitely have state sales tax and in some cases city sales tax we do not have VAT added to the cost, I feel that many Europeans (especially those not self employed who may be paying more attention to the VAT for tax purposes) have no idea how much more they are paying for some non grocery items as that VAT price os included in the total price sticker....I get that this can make things easier as far as figuring out if you can afford everything before getting up to the register however this is a massive hidden tax that virtually all of Europe pays... In some cases as much ss 23% which is insane. Our State sales tax is no higher than 7% add to that city tax potentially in some cities and you sre looking at perhaps another 2% ... So yeah I am pretty sure that using hidden taxes like the VAT most Europeans don't realize how much they actually are paying compared to the US and that I guarantee is by design... On the plus side at least those extra taxes go to pay for "free" healthcare, lower education costs etc...free is in quotations marks as nothing is truly free in life, someone always pays for it be it through taxes or labor or both.

Yes, this. OP wasn't talking about artists; he was talking about the genres.

Adele sings American style music. He didn't say that Americans have better musicians, which we do, then Europeans he said that modern music started in America.
Adele sings soul RnB music her and Sam.
One of my pet peeves is the history thing.

Like the guy in Vancouver BC that used to come to WA a few times a year and would stock up on items to sell in his store.
We have that milk in the US, as well. I usually keep a couple boxes on hand, just in case I run out of refrigerated milk.

In retail, approaching a customer and asking, "Hi! How can I help you today?" is part being polite but more importantly, an anti-theft procedure. By acknowledging everyone who comes in and seeing them face to face lowered shoplifting by nearly half back in the 1970's.
Every genre of modern music came from the US. Most in the southern US. Not a debate to be had.

Your last comment has no logic behind it. By that same principle, no Usa without Europe 😂
As a patriot I think that America is the best country but which country is best is subjective.

One thing for me in the USA about shopping is how easy it is to find things. I now get things delivered in 1.5 - 3 hours on Amazon and it's really nice. We have ancient Indian ruins (e.g. Mesa Verde) - you don't have to go to Mexico or South America.

Knobels is a huge family owned park up on the mountains of Pennsylvania which has mostly old rides that are completely refurbished from the ground up and simply rebuilt better. The golden ticket award winner for two years running Phenix the airtime beast of a coaster still runs as smooth as ever. The knobels park does have one original coaster and that’s the bobsleigh coaster at the front of the park. Knotts berry farm started as a literal berry farm but the owners wanting a little more business added various rides and things to do over time that the berry farm only operated as a food provider to the park itself. Knotts rides are themed to the farm and the products it sells, although the coasters are themed to more western themes like mine carts or old west things. Damn didn't know there was actually a theme park in Pennsylvania. I know there are independent ones across the US but Pennsylvania wasn't on my mind.
183588 U.S. combat deaths in Europe during WWII. This is just in Europe.
Canada has actually produced some great musicians but their success is largely due to the American radio marketplace. Even British bands made it big because of their record sales here.
You can like or leave these bands and what they've stood for but there's no denying that British bands like Dire Straights, led zep, black Sabbath etc, were legendary musicians.
No one is denying that. He said that those bands were influenced by what America created. That’s it! Not saying these groups aren’t creat just a hybrid of what came before them and that started in America. Have you heard of Grime and Garage that was basically created in Europe and some American bands were an off chute of those Genres. Not saying those American groups weren’t great they just where a copycat of an art form that Europeans created.
@@Kim-427 I don't know about that though. It's kind if a subjective opinion.
Sure rock came out of blues and folk but I'm not sure hard rock and metal would have ever been invented if not for British bands.
American bands were doing something completely different than what Sabbath was and one could argue that led zeppelin was the first acid rock band. While Sabath was giving birth to heavy metal. The Beatles actually were acid rock but in a different way that was more in line with American folk rock.
@@Kim-427 you could make the argument that there's no scenario where the music scene of the 80s would ever have happened with out the British influence of the 60s 70s and that the 90s was basically but not completely an American phenomenon.
@@Kim-427 yeah I could definitely agree with that.
@@Kim-427 I'm not even sure that Europeans created heavy metal as an intentional genera. Sabbath, zeppelin has some hints of it. But probably Iron maiden was the first true "metal band" I think Sabbath was doing something different and didn't even really have a name for what it was yet.
But you could argue that rock in general tends to have an either African tribal beat to it or a military drum beat in some of it. So Africans created the tribal beat and Europe created the battle march. So if we're going back to origins and not distinguishing between rock and metal, where does that leave your theory about where America got rock from? It evolved from African and European beats and riffs.
Tell me metallica doesn't have medieval sounding string intros and outros in many songs.
I love Europe and America for so many reasons.
Being that I live in California and love amusement parks...I agree.
I absolutely love that Europe doesn't bring you a check until you ask for it.
Gas prices are just like you said...how far do you drive....and avoid LA. Driving...uhg.
Love You Guys...❤❤❤
LA gets a bad rap but Dodgers Stadium is in LA. Who wouldn't want to go see it. Pfft
North Cali I n understand

I'm from Ohio and I've been to BOTH Cedar Point AND Kings Island. You would not be disappointed
This is the best place to live overall. It was big of them to react to this video.
I, for one, love Knotts Berry Farm!
My Daughter went to Europe for two and a half years. She says Europe smells like a toilet, and the only places she went where she was treated well was England, and France. She said she wasn't treated well anywhere else, and that European men weren't worth the sweat off an American mans balls. She said the Swiss were the absolute WORST, most ignorant people she'd ever met. HER words, not mine.
Hey, look at the great collaboration the USA and England gave us. Ted Lasso!
Americans have also invented semiconductors, allowing us to have modern computers today, supercomputers, AI supercomputer, quantum computer.
Wait till the comment section realizes that the US and much of the western hemisphere was settled by Europrans and became somewhat similar cultures.
It's not personal preference about music. His point was that the different modern genres were invented here. If not for that there wouldn't BE any rock, etc.
Gas today in my little town is 2.99 a gallon. It costs me about $75 us to fill my truck from empty.
No combat on US soil, however we were in the world wars. My father was in England in WW2 in hospitals and such and my uncles were drivers of gas trucks and supplies.
Old data gas this week was $2.97/gallon
I just filled my tank today in far north Massachusetts near the New Hampshire border and it was $3.09 a gallon. I would hate to see the prices of the states that make the national average near $4.80. Eesh!
Portland, Oregon sweatshirt! I live 40 minutes south of Portland and work there!
One thing I will give Europe is their public transportation, in particular the trains.
I am an American who has always gravitated more towards English musicians.
I don't think it's better. There is a death penalty, education is expensive, healthcare is expensive, and justice doesn't convince me either.
There’s Russian fishing camps on the coast of Alaska. Been there for years.
Yeah for some reason in the US soccer moms like to drive giant gas guzzling SUV's just to take their kids to school and pick up groceries.
People seem to forget the Marshall Plan to rebuild your rebuild France Germany war and all the money we spent on it
The only modern music tyep Europe can actually take credit for is probably techno. Rock, pop, wrap, r&b, country, blues, jazz, and others all originated in America.
nope
Wherever you live if you are happy, is best.
He was wrong about the taxes i the U.S.-The top 10 percent of earners paid 74 percent of all income taxes and the top 25 percent paid 89 percent. Altogether, the top fifty percent of filers earned 89 percent of all income and were responsible for 97.7 percent of all income taxes paid in 2020.The other half of earners (those with incomes below $42,184) owed 2.3 percent of all income taxes in 2020.--National Taxpayers Union
