This album is the most beautiful Christmas present. The First Noel is amazing opening for the album. At times it felt like there is something film noir about it. This style suits her so well, the queen of dark opera. I hope she will continue in this style. I need this haunting magic and music in my life.

Can't understand why Tarja lebel Christmas dark whereas Christmas lighten the dark, brings cheer to lifeless life. Recording spiritual songs of salvation that brighten the dark but still framing it dark has no logic. From my side Tarja deserve thumbs down. 👎👎👎
Christmas is a happy time for you, and thats amazing for you, but for many those are actually sad times. Since the "From Spirits to Ghosts" album Tarja dedicated her christmas songs to those who feel lonely and sad during Christmas. For many people who lost family members, for instance, it can be a nostalgic, melancholic, introspective time, as it was for her for a long time since she lost her mother, it was her mother's favorite time of year. Also Christmas time is actually a dark time in her homeland, Finnland, it's very cold and the daytime only lasts for less than an hour in some places. Those are the reasons why she choose to make dark, not happy Christmas albums, for those who don't really feel happy during those times and I do identify a lot, cause Christmas and New Year Eve are usually melancholic for me and I don't really want to be listening to happy songs. If you want a traditional Christmas album from her, she released one in 2006, you can always listen to that.
I don't see Christmas as a sad time, but I don't see it as a happy holiday either, and I hate those commercial pop hits. For me, it is rather a period full of mysticism. Dark Christmas is a dark album, but it is illuminated by Tarja's beautiful voice. It's a wonderful combination. In my opinion, Tarja returned the mysticism to Christmas with her songs.

One of the problems with this album is that it all sounds the same. Did she do it on a small budget? It's like once you've heard one track you've heard them all - similar production sound across the board, same percussion/backing instruments being used a lot. Don't get me started on the fact she is dressed in the same witch/sorceress costume with those hideous clawed gloves and she just stands and waves her hands around constantly. Someone said this album is for people who feel sad at this time of year. Well this isn't going to cheer them up is it? If you hate Christmas then maybe just try to ignore it. Plan a hobby for the new year or something. Why on earth you'd think it's a good idea to listen to Goth versions of Christmas carols I have no clue. I actually like Tarja's Nightwish era more than the other female singers' but this is a REALLY weird project from her.
