    Thank you for joining the flashlight community. You bring a whole new level of production value to this hobby. Great content like this inspires others to step up their game. At least for me, it's making me think twice whenever I upload a video. For now, I'll keep doing my 1-shot, no edit phone videos, but when I have more time, I'll dust off Premiere and start learning After Effects.

    I agree, the D4S is well-made and has a very practical design. The only things I can really criticize about it are the overall size and the lack of a clip. It's just slightly too big to carry around all the time, so I don't use it as much as smaller EDC-style lights. I use a KR4 a lot more, because it's smaller and has a fantastic clip. But I'd probably rank the D4S as a close second.
    Outdoors with a coat on, however, is a different story. The D4S is _much_ better at that.

    Huzzah, it's here! This was awesome!
    As a totally biased person who bought a D4SV2 W2 as my second flashlight (after my first, a KR4 E21A 2700K), it's a great, useful light. I tend to go on walks with my KR4 pocket-clipped to one glove for general soft walking ambiance that I don't have to hold, and the D4SV2 in my other hand for looking far out, visibility around cars (alongside a retroreflective high visibility vest), etc.
    Given I care a lot about beam quality, I appreciate your comments on those aspects. I'm still tempted by a dual channel desire to simplify given how I use two flashlights on walks currently, but I think my wallet is safe.. for now.

    Again great quality in-depth video! IMO the 2-channel feature is a game-changer. Being able to have both a flooder and a thrower in one flashlight is amazing for anyone who actually uses these lights while on the move. Love my 219b + W1 DT8 for walking and hiking. The D4SV2 is intriguing, but size and weight make me hesitate.

    • @KBWrecker
      @KBWrecker 3 года назад +3

      It's cool but the output on either channel will be less than if you just had a light that did one thing or the other. I guess it depends on how much you need that flexibility

    • @LuxWad
      @LuxWad  3 года назад +1

      I do think the DT8 is the perfect platform for multi-channel lights, the 219b/W1 combo sounds awesome. For me though the D4SV2 is probably better single-channel. I think the upcoming DM1.12 will be a better use of the multi-channel design.

  • @westsenkovec
    @westsenkovec 3 года назад +9

    Great video. I'm glad you used the D4 for comparison. I wish you included the DT8 as well. It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on all three models considering they all have regulated and dual channel options now.
    Having all three versions of the D4S for review must have been a dream come true.
    I've read that people had issues with anodizing on their lights. Some even went all the way sanded the flashlights to achieve an apocalyptic look since the anodizing was wearing of. Does that happen sometimes because, as you mentioned, he outsources the parts?

    • @LuxWad
      @LuxWad  3 года назад +1

      You're right I should have compared the DT8 - in my own tests, it doesn't manage to sustain as high an output as the D4S. It's also much floodier, the W2 version in particular has a much less pleasant beam in my opinion.
      The issues with the anodizing does come from the outsourcing, especially the color variations. The parts are ordered in batches which sometimes have slightly different coloration, so occasionally the lights can be mismatched

I saw one post where the battery is 4.2 but you can’t charge it over 3.7 I and many other people. I’m assuming don’t know how to do that on a battery charger? i’ve seen don’t overcharge. The highest capacity 26800 cell right now is 6.8Ah, right? If you get the D4SV2 with the 26800 body and W2 emitters along with the boost driver, that should put this in the same workhorse category as the Acebeam P18 and Fenix TK series.

  • @parkermize
    @parkermize Год назад

    Your video quality is unparalleled... thank you for this. Can you put out a dedicated video covering the D4SV2 with the 26800 extension tube?
    I just bought a single channel boost driver model with 519A, 2700k. I got the extension tube because I have a few extra batteries for my convoy L8.
    I am an industrial maintenance technician and I bought it to EDC on my belt. I know it doesn't have a clip so unless someone has a holster suggestion I will probably have to make my own out of leather. I thought about incorporating a magnet and making the majority of the holster low profile instead of the traditional style covering the whole light for retention.

    • @LuxWad
      @LuxWad  Год назад +1

      I would like to cover the 26800 tube but need to find time for it. I know some users have adapted clips from other lights to fit the D4S, I think the Olight Warrior 2s or seeker clips might fit. Check out r/flashlight on reddit for more info on that, people there can help you out

      @LuxWad thank you for the response.
      I really look forward to more of your videos. I like flashlights, but I mainly click on your videos because of the production quality and the way you explain features in an interesting way.
      There is less on reddit than I expected on the D4sV2. But it has been helpful overall. I also looked at BLF and there's a lot of great info there.

    • @parkermize

      @LuxWad if I only used one battery for this light and charged it every night to 4.2v, would it REALLY affect the lifetime of the battery? I mean by a lot? I like to have a fully charged cell every day in case of emergencies, but I've heard that it's best to charge them up to 3.7v

    • @LuxWad
      @LuxWad  Год назад +1

      @parkermize If you left it at 4.2 every night, it would definitely see reduced capacity in about a year of use. I personally only charge fully if I'm expecting heavy usage, otherwise I keep my cells at 3.7v. It's not a big deal either way

  • @Rejdukien

    Got to say, this is so far still my favorite light with the W2 emitters. Just a really nice compromise between flood and throw. Even comparing to an Astrolux EA01S (XHP50.2) -- all flood, no throw -- it doesn't feel as "constricted" as you might think yet still has significantly more throw.
    Just wish I could put 21700s in there, as those are significantly easier and cheaper to come by.
    Also, just for shenanigans, I'm seriously considering getting another with dual channel capabilities (or the D4K?) - SST20 deep red and W2 deep blue. And at that point, I'm thinking of perhaps modifying anduril with an extra blinky mode to allow strobe with alternating channels. Full on party light. ;)

    • @LuxWad
      @LuxWad  2 года назад

      The W2s are killer in this light, there's not much more one could want.
      I do think the larger D4S is better for dual-channel lights with it's larger optics, but a dual-channel red/blue light would be really fun as an EDC ;)

I have a D4v2 with 219b and i want a high CRI that's brighter/more practical overall but i dont know if id prefer the extra power of the w2s. I know the 519a will be brighter than the 219b but im scared it wont wow me like the w2's and not sure which experience I'd prefer.

    • @LuxWad
      @LuxWad  Год назад +1

      4x 519as should get you about 4500 lumens, it may even push 5,000 in this light (*as start-up values, I would consider these to be 4k lumen lights on Turbo, and of course that will still drop.) Expect a sustained ~600 lumens at normal thermal limit (45C), probably 700+ at higher target temps.
      The W2 will be more impressive, but the 519a is still awesome at night and the nicer color rendition is s huge bonus in my opinon.
      I personally would stick with the domed emitters for higher output, but I prefer floodier lights. The dedomed emitters are very comparable in throw to the XP-L Hi

    Is the linear driver the same thing as the boost driver now offered, or is it something different?

    • @LuxWad
      @LuxWad  2 года назад

      It's totally different, the boost driver increases the voltage to 6V, which is a much more efficient process that allows for higher sustained output and longer runtimes. However, it's only half as bright as the linear+FET driver can be.
      I have a video coming out soon that compares the two directly.

    • @LuxWad

      @@ayokay123 You can request the newer linear driver. The stock D4SV2 comes with the FET+3+1 Driver, which is a bit less efficient at the higher levels but the main difference is really just the button light.

    I bought this light from Jackson today. Enjoyed the video quite a bit. If you don't mind my saying, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a look at actual battery testing, especially for 26650s. The rewrapped batteries, which is all we have ATM, often have very misleading ratings. A 4200mAh 45A cell isn't terribly realistic, either, used in a light. I'd post some links, but I don't think that YT allows it. Good luck. There's a lot of good info on batteries out there. Mooch, for starters.

      I actually do reference mooch and hkjs tests for my videos, but I don't go in depth because it's not super pertinent to the review. I also don't have the ability to test batteries, it might be worth getting into though at some point. I mostly just repeat the stated cd from the cells I use but it might be better to just avoid that altogether and focus on the actauly result in lumens
