Composed in 1837, revised in 1838.
A set of the Martin Luther's German translation of Psalm 42 from the Book of Psalms. At the work's first performance, in Leipzig on 1 January 1838, Mendelssohn conducted the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, with Clara Novello as soprano. He was the orchestra's musical director from 1835 until his death in 1847. Schumann opined in 1837 that Mendelssohn's setting of Psalm 42 was the "highest point that he [Mendelssohn] reached as a composer for the church. Indeed the highest point recent church music has reached at all." Mendelssohn himself described it as “my best sacred piece… the best thing I have composed in this manner”, a work “I hold in greater regard than most of my other compositions.”

One of the few choral pieces that give me chills.
When listening to music like this, I cannot stop wondering how humans can create and enjoy such beautiful masterpieces, indulge in these emotions, take part in the human experience of seeking company, comfort and a sense of belonging AND proclaim hatred, fight wars and resent alleged foreigners (although still fellow human beings). I guess I'll never understand…

LOL
I think this is arguably his greatest work for me
The fugue at the end is ''ooooh' so very dramatic! Love it!
This cantata by Mendelssohn covers the whole gamut of disappointment, longing, hope, and confidence expressed by King David which were the holy musings and yearnings of the exiled king during Absalom’s rebellion. This Psalm was a favorite and appropriate to the experience of the early church.
Die Nr. 6 ist soooo schön. Ich freu mich schon, wenn wir das im WiSe singen werden. Die Tenor- und Bass-Solisten sind der Wahnsinn. So gut komponiert. Hut ab, Herr Mendelssohn.
Stunning piece! As all of Mendelssohn's pslms for soloists, choir and orchestra are!

Gut gemacht kollege
Música maravilhosa.
Un capolavoro
Sólo "el evang s/san mateo" llega a alcanzar semejante belleza... Salmo 42 e doppo morire..!
Only just realised/worked out that the text in the (first part of the) final movement here is the same as the text in Movement 6 of Bach's monumental cantata BWV 21.
É o céu visto da terra!!

Verissimo, stessa cosa vale per Haydn
Wie hören sich nach frischen Wasser schreiende Hirsche an? Klingt das wie röhren oder anders?
