It is good question . I think whip may be used for training purposes only. There too, it may be used for bonafide purposes and not to penalize. A rider should be strict in arena & friendly in the barn.. A rider & horse are two souls & one body. We never use whip to train ourselves. I think you better understand.

Shouldn't ride without safety gears like proper riding helmet flat leather sole shoes ankle high or top boots with jeans and brechees. You are missing the helmet. Good luck
The Latin women are using some type of intoxication which they administer to horses & ponies before the ride so that the poor animal should not retaliate in case of using harsh spurs & severe whipping, which I can not do as my conscience don't allow me. Further, you see, most of the Latin riders are riding mules at a fixed barn or space, whereas I used to ride in open fields & farms when I got the chance, so their riding is quite different from me, because in open space, it is far difficult to control a horse than in fixed or closed space. I think you will understand it. Thankx
