This is her Met Gilda, which was actually very good in all the duets and lyric parts (sometimes really astounding), but her Covent Garden Gilda from the same year was indeed marvelous in every aspects.
She sounds wonderful-I agree the scales are not to the conventional standard (perhaps how a lighter coloratura would do it) but honestly the role of Gilda is SUPER dramatic. This aria stands alone. The best Gildas have a very full voice. Another thing: Anna Netrebko sang it with HER voice...why should she try to sound like Callas, Sutherland, etc; ? She didn't sing any wrong notes...know what I mean? Anyway, I would love to hear the other parts of this role with Anna.
My opinion.
Thanks dear Leo, I've been waiting to hear this for a while. And I already knew what to expect. Obviously her groupies will say she's an amazing Gilda. I don't even need to comment much here. If one isn't deaf it's easy to understand what a terrible choice to sing this was. And seriously, diction is perhaps the least worrying problem here.
Yeah, but I can't see how the fact she's "just" a lyric soprano would diminish her talent. She's never as good in coloratura roles as she's in lyric ones, but I must say she's an intelligent singer in all her coloratura roles as far as the more lyrical parts are concerned. In the coloratura, she doesn't shine but is very successful if compared with other real lyric sopranos. Also remind she's quite "unstable": sometimes she has no trills and then she sings perfect trills in another night. :-)
@piax00 You are so right - 30/40 years ago sopranos of this calibre would be considered also rans mostly engaged by minor houses or used as stand ins, how standards have been lowered!
@REBECCAtheSOPRANO I read on Wikipedia that Netrebko *did* sing the Queen of the Night early in her career. If that information is accurate: Mind-blowing.
I really like it heaps! Those who are stupid enough to spend time listening to something they dislike, thinking their judgement is superior, wanting to put down those whose tastes are different, stop writing rubbish and see a psychiatrist, if you need to. Do not like something? Stop wasting your and everybody else's time, and find something you can enjoy. Art is for appreciation and enjoyment. Would you buy paintings you dislike so you could spend the rest of your life grizzling about them?
I still prefer Diana Damrau's Caro Nome, but Anna Netrebko is an excellent soprano in her own right. This is a difficult aria, and she sings it beautifully.
I disagree with you on that Anna Netrebko has no school (I mean the vocal technique), she studied singing 10 years. One other thing - every voice has its defects, not all singers respect rules in vocal technique, at least not all rules - that's life etc.
Anna Sings very good and is so beautifull but i think Ekatrina Siurina is better in this song and acording to me is Edita Gruberova the absolute top in this (part).
@eradesso yes, she is a little "heavy and slow". it is beautifulm though not perfect. i love darker voices... but she should choose better her repertoire. it is just when Diana Damrau sang the queen of the night. i think she goes a bit slow on that too...
yes yes! Joan Sutherland and Edita Gruberova are my favourite sopranos, but I think that Sutherland sings this better than Edita^^ my best are: 1.Joan Sutherland 2. Edita Gruberova 3. Maria Callas (btw, I also LOVE Diana Damrau ;-)
I think, as most have said, that her problem is her repertoire. Having a big voice is not a problem to sing Gilda; Big-voiced sopranos have sung it (Callas, Moser, Sutherland). The problems here is the agility. i think she should sing Tosca, Mimi, Manon Lescaut: lyric parts; there she would shine.
AulendilElessar Those are spinto parts, not lyric ones. Netrebkos voice is by nature a high lyric even a coloratura but without the necessary technique...
After reading all the comments below, the only serious question I have for myself is: would I jump her bones given the opportunity? In a demisemihemidemisemiquaver.
I love anna!! She sings my favorite "D'oreste D'ajace"..... but Caro Nome!!! No no no no no 100 times no, she's not a coloratura soprano, I didnt like this version I missed the coloratura parts... This one is not for Anna :(
I don't think so - not in the coloratura parts. Tebaldi is better than Netrebko as Violetta, I agree (yet, because her Violetta has vastly improved since the famed 2005 performance, her 2008 performance in ROH was much more interesting). However, she could be average in "Sempre libera", but I heard Tebaldi sing some very insufficient coloratura in other performances. That is not to diminish her, she really had a great limitation in coloratura, but she's still the best lyric spinto ever for me.
If you haven't listened to Eglise Gutierrez's version (listed on the right) I'd like to recommend you click on that and check it out! I'm sure you'll be as spellbound as I was - for me, it's the loveliest interpretation I've heard to date!!
i think anna is the best soprano of all times,i also have a crush on her, i have compared her with at least twelve , and she is thest overall of all of them.
I wasn't actually diminishing her at all that is why I wrote "just". There have been many awesome lyric sopranos. To me she's just an "average" singer atm because she does not use her voice for the right repertoire and she keeps miscascting herself. So she "could" be great. You say she's unstable, I would say "unschooled". It's not a matter of day off, it's a matter of technique. Same with her problematic High Es. She should stop attempting them high D is the highest safe top note of her range.
leoperarm what an exaggeration! I enjoy opera as a whole and looking at Netrebko is a pleasure and a believable piece of art. I wonder how one could have looked at Sutherland and enjoy?
While Anna's a tremendous talent, no doubt, Gilda isn't right for her. This aria requires more vocal agility than Anna brings here. I prefer Laura Claycomb's and Natalie Dessay's versions in this role.
@eradesso As much as I appreciate Netrebko's charisma and acting skills, she has, sadly, lowered the bar for opera soprano stardom as well as 'cultured-ness' and class for opera discussion and marketing among audiences. Surely this is not entirely her fault, the industry has been wanting this type of dumbing down to increase sales. I would like this Emperor (empress) without clothes era in opera to end. At least Beczala is coming up to end it for the tenor's side.
@seetsebea1 yes netrebko is part of the new generation but not the best in this aria, the best in this aria is the peruvian soprano eglise gutierrez who is gaining a lot of respect for her unique voice and technique, check her out :D! alexXx
That is extremely disrespectful. She has put an enormous amount of work into training and sculpting her voice. Yes, she is very beautiful, but in opera that is not the point. It is not the beauty of the face and body, but the beauty of voice that counts.
harleyasv For your information I am an opera singer...she has the beauty for Gilda..but she does not do this aria well....she is a much better Norina or Manon . ....but with her beauty...much is forgiven
my point still stands. No, her voice is not ideal for this aria, but her beauty should not at all enter the equation, which it apparently does for you, evident in your saying "....but with her beauty...much is forgiven" Honestly the great thing about opera is exactly that what matters is not, in fact, what the body looks like, but what the body can do, which is producing a lovely singing voice. It's quite few of the arts which carries this quality still and I think we should defend this rarity. That's all.
yes the problem is that she's so bad in the coloratura parts of any role she sings from Lucia to Gilda to Violetta and Elvira and so on that it makes people forget (and makes her forget too!) that she's "JUST" a lyric soprano MAYBE with some agility but DEFINITELY not a coloratura. She would be great if she stuck to the lyric roles, I see with pleasure that her schedule for the future has shifted more towards that repertoire.
Sounds very laboured, especially the cadenza and the Slavic tone is not right for Gilda. The audience clearly doesn't know one thing from another. A lovely voice really but miscast here.
Anna is such a beautiful woman. I love her so much. Greetings from Vienna Austria
She is very good.
Such a pure voice!
I've heard many records of Caro Nome. Anna sings it very well.
She is simply fantastic
I like it very much! :) She has such a beutiful voice....
Lovely! ❤

Very beautiful!
Siempre me gustó la música clásica, ahora me he dado cuenta de éstas voces extraordinarias. Gracias.
splendida come sempre
Yes, I do like her voice... thank you ...
This is her Met Gilda, which was actually very good in all the duets and lyric parts (sometimes really astounding), but her Covent Garden Gilda from the same year was indeed marvelous in every aspects.
One of the best soprano at all! Fantastic! I love her voice.
Young Olga Peretyatko with great Leo Nucci is another, recent, beautiful Gilda. Truly beautiful (and perfect) voice, IMHO....
Sounds absolutely divine to me!
Echt prachtig ❤❤❤❤❤
Fantastik! Bravo Anna! !

I think netrebko is glorious and I really hate comments like she's nothing like Callas because that's just rude.
her biggest success is to have lowered the standard of singing at the MET.
This was provincial!
You overestimate the western standard, which is typical.
@martindogo They all have beautiful voices.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like a microphone is hidden somewhere close to her or in her dress.
Anna Sings very good and is so beautifull but i think Ekatrina Siurina is better in this song and acording to me is Edita Gruberova the absolute top in this (part).
No--wrong voice type period. She pulls it off but that's all--flat notes in there all over the place.
Sorry, but we are talking here about Gilda (Rigoletto) not Violeta (Traviata) is a big difference.
Those are the original low notes. Most sopranos take the higher variation.
Elmondhatatlanul gyönyörű. (prekrasznij)
@eradesso yes, she is a little "heavy and slow". it is beautifulm though not perfect. i love darker voices... but she should choose better her repertoire. it is just when Diana Damrau sang the queen of the night. i think she goes a bit slow on that too...

my best are:
1.Joan Sutherland

Diana Damrau Is better vocally for Gilda...If we could combine her with Ana...we would have perfection!!!!

Very indifferent singing; she does not sound young, nor in love-but it sounds like a cold reading in a practice room. She needs to practice.
I’m afraid no practice would be useful.
I like it.
Not very competent. Just enjoy. Good enough for me.
Thank u Anna.
I love anna!! She sings my favorite "D'oreste D'ajace"..... but Caro Nome!!! No no no no no 100 times no, she's not a coloratura soprano, I didnt like this version I missed the coloratura parts... This one is not for Anna :(
@eradesso You are so right I am sad to say! This effort is lacking in so many ways it is more of an interpretation than the aria Caro Nome.
Exactamente
Netrebko is usually better in duets where she adds much. But then again - this isn't bad.
Why??
she sounds a little too forceful at the beginning, but on the other hand, she adds those expressive sighs in the pauses. interesting interpretation
I don't think so - not in the coloratura parts. none of them has access to the video^^ just take a look at the ratings XD
She actually sounds very good here. This is kind of magnificent to me and I am not a fan of Anna's
(3:02, 3:19, 5:38, 6:34)
Para mi , ninguna

you right only La Stupenda

Edita is the best sorprano.. However, Anna is charming and attractive on the stage...
So, when do we get Netrebko's Queen of the Night? ;)
Beautiful voice...but OMG is she capable of singing anything faster than a quarter note in pitch??!
@eradesso As much as I appreciate Netrebko's charisma and acting skills, she has, sadly, lowered the bar for opera soprano stardom as well as 'cultured-ness' and class for opera discussion and marketing among audiences. Crummy sound quality on this recording, but her lovely voice still comes thru.
Definitely not the best title of the video
lmao everybody hates Trebko...but I understand. Why is the diction so poopy?
omg she was flat! at 5:11
yes the problem is that she's so bad in the coloratura parts of any role she sings from Lucia to Gilda to Violetta and Elvira and so on that it makes people forget (and makes her forget too!) that she's "JUST" a lyric soprano MAYBE with some agility but DEFINITELY not a coloratura.

Carla maffioletti is Best version
and last but not least Montserrat
She may have a voice, but can only fake pain and suffering...
It's called Acting.
or MOffo, Gruberova, Guiterrez, Dessay, Sumi Jo, Cotrubas etc.......
Las mejores para mi:
