It’s amazing how Elvis and his band kept this song fresh by changing certain elements and adding others! I enjoyed all versions. BTW. That spin he does in 1975 is incredible!
This is one of the few songs that got BETTER as time went on, the later versions with the orchestra in the introduction and the bass or guitar solo rock!
I'm in the minority when I say his 1974-1975 versions are the best with the 1972 versions closely behind. I just love how the band plays and Elvis’s energy seems off the charts.
Something worth noting and missing here is the introduction of the keys. Electronic organ to several versions during 75/76. I would consider these to be pretty standout versions the key runs as the song exploded were awesome👌🏻
Again, this is all in my humble opinion. From versions 1-3 you can hear the evolvement of the song. I believe Elvis was having more fun with performing the piece, and had more ideas in adding more into the intro. In Version Four, he had Schiff back so he felt more comfortable, and he gave a more powerful performance in which fans everywhere remembers to this very day! In Versions Five through Nine, you can hear how tired his voice was. I think maybe his heart wasn’t into it anymore. Thank you always Leon for posting these compilations!!
The original Vegas ‘70 versions are the best for me, followed by the early ‘77 version. Hearing Elvis for the first time do this on the On Stage album blew me away and still does!
He’s a southerner for sure. I recogniz the ways he pronounces words. I’m a southener too but my grammar is a little better than Mississippi sounds back then.
I certainly prefer the earlier versions of it; I am not a fan of the brass addition to the song. But I'd love to see an 8mm of the last performance. Elvis sounds great in it and the crowd is going nuts.

This is definitely the song that most changed during the 70's, almost all the others stayed the same thing but with some exceptions like Can't Help Falling in Love, I still remember Leon your old video about Polk Salad Annie evolving throughout the 70's with a ton of footage, that was a great video 😆 a shame everything that happened with your older channel, but back to this video, I don't really have a preference regarding PSA, I do love the way the song is treated during 1970/1971 but at the same time I love how energetic the song became in latter years, to be honest I don't think Elvis (in any way) would maintain PSA the exact same way forever, him changing it gave the song a new air, something more diverse you know? made the song more eclectic to not become what most of the others did, as a throw away or ... something like "I'm tired of this particular song, let's just do it already", the way the song changed after 1971 gave Elvis more reason to perform it with energy, with more passion compared with the other energetic songs. Really, I just can't imagine Elvis in 1974 doing PSA with the same intro from 1970 and with the same slow pace 😂 Anyway that's just my opinion Oh, and I surely have to mention the great spin Elvis does in 28:14 during this amazing version from August 1975 Vegas canceled engagement, like with most of the others songs he performed in 1975, he did a ton of amazing live performances that year of PSA like we can see in this footage and in another one from July 19 :)

This is a song I've always loved by Elvis personally I prefer the faster rockyer versions but they're all great. Until today I'd never thought about about how different they are. Thanks for posting
This was very interesting. However, I always felt this song was better when Elvis performed it in a slower, bluesy, gritty version. I never cared for those very sped up, fast versions he did in the mid to late seventies, because the feel of the song was lost completely, IMHO.
His early versions were cheap imitations of the original, only in the later years did he piut his own talent in to it., Original versions are almost note for note copies of the original, so whats the point? Later versions rocked

Yes, Elvis a Southerner. He was born in Mississippi and spent his teenage yrs. up to adulthood in Memphis.

I prefer the guitar intro on the first version, where James 'skips' a note (or more accurately hadn't added it in yet). I think it sounds a lot cooler
