Shell Oils Classic, Round 3. Re-televised in the early hours of 19th May 1991 on TVS' Late Night Late. Introduction: David Bobin Commentary: Arthur Debenham
Wow. You know a driver's good when he can compete in a top-level rallycross race AND do a live interview in the middle of it--and with no clutch LOL! These guys were legends. Massive respect!
The Martin Schanche developed Xtrac Gartrac Zackspeed Escort was one of the most significant Motorsport cars of the 80s - there was no suprise it could still keep up with and beat Rs200s and other contemporaries a good few years after it debuted. In many ways it was technically far superior to the Rs200.
Yes. They were very popular rallycross cars back in the 80's. Rob Gibson and the Flying Finn's Matti Alamaki, Seppo Nittymaki and Pekka Kanerva all had flat nose Porsches.
They did things differently back then. It was more akin to David and Goliath! Unpredictable and most importantly entertaining. Proper racing! If you look up 1971 Crystal Palace Osram trophy, that's also a very good watch.
I would like a run down on the car models involved in this race. I think I see mini, fiat, and ford... but I am having trouble identifying the models. Any one want to illuminate?
Probably some interruption between the vcr and the capture box when it was recorded. It probably got confused and thought it was Macrovision. I have a better vcr now and time base corrector to avoid these issues.
I love all these cars (except the tr8...they were shit).I've either driven, owned, raced against or have a decent story about everyone of these cars almost! (even the RS200...Pat Doran is a neighbour!) Modern racing might be quick but the cars are ugly as sin, they all look the same, back then a single hundredth of a second was all you needed to id a car!

"And I've now got no clutch!"
"Oh dear!"
Classic.
Time stamp?
A dapper race chap! Good show. Good show. Thank you for uploading.
Amazing to see these classics in action 😍
What's really incredible is the live video feed being transmitted from the cars live, in 1987
The first live in car broadcast occured eight years previously in the 1979 Daytona 500.
Some absolute legends of club motor sport, in possibility the greatest discipline ever created
Good grief; I was actually there at the time.
Worth watching if only to hear that S1 Quattro 😎👌🏻
Fantastic stuff! Very surprising that an Escort, even with AWD and all that power, was beating the likes of RS200's!
same engine
ste lamo weren't they zakspeed engines in those g3's?
@@thebiggooch1498 Yes - full house spec Zakspeed 1.9 litre turbo.

Roger newbould Renault 5 😍
Is that a flat nose 911?

Great vid.
brilliant
so why is there a 660hp audi quattro in the same race as a vw beetle lol

I know there was some talk about Mikael Nordströms beetle pushing 800hp at it worst. So I would guess there were 4x4 beetles with 5-600 hp :)
The VW Bugs had Porsche engines!
The winner of a lesser class gets the opportunity to run with the big boys however, that ain't no normal Beetle!
1991? 1987?

+Fritz Casper` Ford RS200. Audi UR Quattro S1 or Sport (swb). Metro 6R4. Peugeot T16. The Escorts were Xtrac 4x4 as was the Beetle I think... afaik :D
+Fritz Casper Escort Xtrac, Ford RS200, MG Metro 6R4, Audi Quattro S1. Think that's all.
I'll add Gary Baker's Ford Fiesta also a Renault 5
comentator sounds like alex (lemon bmw guy)

Why isn’t ESPN airing this?
What the hell is HDCP?? check out the subliminal message at 23:22

High Definition Copy Protection - nothing to worry about
9:00 ??????
The capture box I used dropped a frame and got confused. I use a TBC when capturing now so that's no longer a problem.
@@ezoray I think it should flash subliminal messages like, "watch more rallycross" or "Say no thank you to NASCAR" That would be amusing!
1:03
Why didn't they just use a Go-pro?
is this a joke? if so, i get it. in all seriousness though, gopros didn't exist back then.
