I just bought a 74 that looks just like this one, a little rougher shape, but will be fun to fix up!

Very nice seeing stock old sportsters. AMF made some of the best looking motorcycles ever. And they were reliable.

My first Harley when I was 19 years old in 1979 - a 1974 XLH , with the red-white-blue stripes on a black
painted beauty just like this one !
That rear license plate “ box “ for those that don’t know was the 9 volt battery powered alarm system !
It was mercury switch powered to start “ chirping “ if someone moved it .
That Bendix carburetor was SO user friendly to dial in the air/fuel mixture screw AND the idle screw - BOTH could be done at a red light !
1974 was the last year of the right hand shifter .
    In 1990 , I purchased a 1975 XLH .
It was the first year of the left hand shifter , as the US government forced HD to move it over to the other side because of accidental deaths …
Those 4- speed transmissions with those 1000cc iron head engines were one of the best products the Motor Company ever produced .
    I’m 62 years old , and I’m on my
    13 th HD .
The rest have been “ big twins “ but I’ll always cherish my miles that I spent on my two Sportsters .
Regardless of the criticism from the crowd - I RODE those two machines and enjoyed endless trouble free miles .

My first Harley bought with money I saved while in Vietnam. Mine was blue. Usually a bitch to start but fun to ride. I eventually had the electric start added and it was suddenly easy to start. Finally sold it in about 2005.

Remember, that is an air cooled engine. I wouldn’t let it idle like that often. Very nice XL.
