Excellent video! I’ve been physically disabled for over 50 years and this video should save people a lot of money and stress by reducing the number of options they need to try.

My original question was regarding the installation of a Bolt-On Toilet Riser (I mistakenly referred to it as a Clamp-on) on a toilet with a concealed trap. Turns out the new Carex Toilet Riser is not compatible with my new concealed trap toilet and was not as easy to install as one I purchased years ago for a different toilet. Thank goodness I looked at your RUclips channel this morning to find a new, absolutely easy to install toilet riser by Kohler. Thank you so much for doing what you do. The information you supply is invaluable to many.

We use a LiftSeat, similar in appearance to Dignity's basic toilet lift. Both are great when loss of muscle is a problem. We're looking for a good portable riser to use when traveling.

Great video! One more option is an arm bolted to the wall. This folds up to rest vertically against the wall, and comes down & is long enough to be a big help. I don’t know the brand.

Comfort height toilet seats are presumably just higher toilet units, as opposed to add-ons! I got confused when you referred to the 17" to 19" height range for them!

I have limited mobility and walk with a four-wheeled walker (rollator). Arthritis in my knees means that I cannot sit on low chairs and toilets, and I certainly cannot stand up from them. At home I use a toilet seat riser with arms which works well. However out in the community is a different issue. Even the disabled toilets are too low for me. I am gradually getting stronger by doing my rehab exercises, but in the meantime I found a product which is a game changer for me. It is called the Free2Go Rollator. It is a rollator which has a toilet seat under the main seat. It means I can use public bathrooms safely.

Interesting. I was going to tell you I use my older walker (the one with the little skis) in front of me when I go, in case I can't get up. But I see you are doing fine without my imput.

I just bought a Kohler Hyten elevated toilet seat from Amazon. Really well constructed and super easy to install. It has two release points for easy cleaning and both the lid and the seat are soft close. It cost just under 40.00.
    Very happy with it.

Hi Lindsey. How do you balance sustaining muscle strength with assistance services? For example, you get a higher toilet, now you lost muscle capabilities to go from a low to high position. I see my father become weaker that he needs the assistance devices but then he relies on them. Yet one wants the to protect a person from falling. Can you do a video on how one stays safe to pull up their pants after toileting. You stand safely up but now you need to bend down to get your pants and risk falling forward. A great video would be showing all of the critical points of toileting. Low height, you need what muscle/strength, pushing off the toilet can propel you forward (what's the best way to get up (what muscle group). How to practice those exercises to sustain ones ability to self toilet. You're a great educator. Thanks so much.

I’m a major proponent of using supportive tools as a means to support safety and independence while conserving energy for more motivating (I.e. hobbies, family time, etc.). Maintaining and even improving strength is something that can be prioritized in all aspects of life.

Hi I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and one of the best bits of advice I was given was "preserve your body now" so that means I don't stand when I can sit, I also take the bus and use aids such as for picking up and raising the toilet seat BUT I exercise and go to the gym. This may seem counter productive but actually the exercise is targeted for building my strength and by not wearing myself out on menial tasks I have the strength to go to the gym. Not everything helps build strength in the body, there's nothing wrong with your dad using aids just make sure he does other things, not all movement is the same either. I can lift weights in the gym but I still struggle to use the stairs.

How do you sit on the raised toilet seat?

  • @user-cv8rc6jb8y

I have ALS. Using the toilet is definitely a problem. I now have an over the toilet commode which works well but does take all my strength to get up. The VA ordered the Diginity DL1 for me with installation.
The install instructions say to screw the DL1 to the toilet where the toilet seat was. I did not allow the installer to do that for fear of the DL1 moving might damage the doughnut or crack the porcelain.
When I tried it out, I could not stand up, even at full lift. While pushing down on the front of the handles the rear of the seat did raise up. I'm glad it was not attached to the toilet. It probably would have broken the toilet mounts. I finally was able to get up by placing my hands all the way back on the arms. Also for the brief time I was on the lift the seat was hard and very uncomfortable and the opening was way to small. A man would have a very difficult time going number 1 on that seat. I returned the DL1 and now appreciate my over the toilet commode much more.

I'm considering a riser between the porcelain and my modern toilet seat that has quick-release hinges for easy cleaning of the porcelain. Problem is I haven't found a riser that has quick release hinges. Does any manufacturer make one that bolts on but which can slide off when user pushes a button or twists the hinge? If not, how long does it take to remove the risers that have clamps on both sides near the back of the riser? How about the risers with the blue clamp at the front of the riser?

Check out the Kohler Hyten Toilet Riser. It has a quick release button on the back for easy cleaning. I have a video about them on here and so far it is my new favorite option! ruclips.net/video/U5PNT5vo1PU/видео.htmlsi=gxlKkymXmAcLQF49

I have one of those sit-on-top-of-the-rim riser seats with handles that I have used during my chemo treatments. I thought it was wonderful until I realized what was happening. I have an old round-style toilet in my home like what you are sitting on in this video. I have found (disgustingly) that liquid will run down the side and onto the toilet rim instead of dripping directly into the toilet. It even drips down the sides of the toilet. The riser fits the toilet, the riser has what I would call a drip ring around it, but the drips seem to go over onto the toilet rim where a toilet seat would normally sit, and then it will drip down the sides of the toilet!!!! and when you are very weak for weeks on end you just can't clean regularly. I was horrified to see how liquid migrated to the seat base area and down the side of the toilet. My bathroom never stunk to high heaven before this. I finally started using sanitary pads underneath to catch liquids and then I change those regularly! but very disappointed that this thick riser seat would allow liquids to flow over the lip underneath and onto the toilet seat base and then down the sides of the toilet. Have you seen this happen with use??? The system is so simple, but it is not functioning well! Now I am looking for some-kind-of funnel seat that goes into the toilet and not just sits on top of the toilet seat base.

I have an idea that the toilet with the elongated bowl is intended for males and the round shaped one is for females. I had an argument with someone about this. What is your opinion? I would like to have a round shaped toliet, but I live in rental housing so I don't have a choice.

    • @EquipMeOT
      @EquipMeOT  4 месяца назад +1

I could see the reasoning behind this idea, but I don't know that it was ever truly established this way. Elongated is the most accessible design for all because of the flexibility of reaching for hygiene, male or female.
