  • Welcome to the CL Pet Ads where we will evaluate care shown in these ads and discuss with you the good and bad pet husbandry. We will bring up valuable points, what works for the pet, mention what could be improved and discuss a species needs. The focus in these videos will be about educating to encourage the viewer on learning more about the pet and to showcase #ThinkAdoptionFirst. Not everyone will bring their small companion to a shelter or rescue. Many choose to list still on Craigslist. There are hardly any rescues or foster homes for small pets like hamsters, so maybe you'd like to help out your small pet community after seeing this video? Who knows, maybe you'll make a different in the lives of pets and people.

I'm a guinea pig person, I have 7 at the moment, and that picture of the cute Abyssinian all alone in that small, bare cage made me so sad and angry. I just can't comprehend what it does all day... I'm going to take a wild guess that it doesn't get much floor time or much human interaction, or any other stimulation. And when it does get some floor time, a chance to finally run around, it gets shoved into an.... excessive ball? WTF? That is just cruel.

I know this all too well. We need to have a change in how pet stores sell their care towards kids. We need this to stop. Yes kids should be included in pet keeping however parents and family need to be the focus, not the individual child.

I feel your frustration. In the UK cage sizes are improving so there is more variety due to the fact we have been petitioning pet shops and the government for better enclosures. There is unfortunately still too many small cages. Incidentally my adopted Chinese came to me due to being bought as a pair from a supposed breeder!

Over the past 2 and a half years I've had the pleasure of caring for a very social hamster who always wants my attention. I've not struggled to keep him, even when I'm very busy. If the cage is big enough and well enriched, the hamster is fine on its own most of the time! Then they're calm and happy rather than stressed and frustrated, so interacting with them is a joy.

It's so sad how many people get hamsters and don't know or care to research how to care or them. I remember this girl in my dorm getting a hamster and she hadn't even bought a cage for her. It's kinda how I got to research hamsters myself and after like 3 months of her dropping her off every weekend at my place (cus she went home over weekends and I stayed) I kinda kidnapped the hamster. Her name is Bicky and she's been with my sister now for 2 years. We got her a bigger enclosure (she kinda went from a small box I last-minute crafted that day to a few other enclosures during my search) and she's now 2.5 years old. I am really happy that videos like these exist because I do remember our first hamsters (when we were 5 and 11) and yeah we knew nothing.

Why does some breeders actually think it is ok to put highly active animals in small breederboxes?!?!?!?! And the Kaytee enclosures? Garbage. I don't get it... hamsters and many other small animals have such short lifespans. It's always like I blink twice and my ratties are chonky grandpas. How can parents not be responsible and take care for the pets as their own? What lesson is that supposed to teach their children - if a living being becomes annoying, just get rid of them?

  • @TV-1997

"don't have enough time to give them attention" is honestly such a stupid excuse... I've rescued about 15 hamsters so far and only very few of them actually wanted my attention every day. Majority of them has been perfectly content being left alone in their large cages with lots of enrichment. Aside from me giving them food, water and treats and keeping their space clean they honestly prefer having nothing to do with me... In my experience caring for one hamster generally takes 30 minutes a day max, maybe an hour if the hamster is very social

I think some leeway should definitely be given to people with disabilities who thought they could do it but couldn't, or when life circumstances change, etc. It's unfortunate but it happens. I had to give up my rats when I got a job that took up more of my time, but they're definitely more demanding than hamsters.
In an ideal world nobody would have to give up an animal. Unfortunately we don't live in an ideal world.

now the axo part is crazy! I am an ex animal care advisor, and I saw that most people seemed to conflate common or accessible animals with being simple to care for, but rarer animal with being hard, so often I would hear, "its /just/ a hamster, its /just/ a bird, how hard can it be?" But I mean, the most basic look into Axolotls shows that they are kinda advanced/high maintenance- its needs flowing water, so a pump, but don't let that water get warm from the pump! so you need a cooler, their skin is frail, gravel kills them ect ect its crazy, pretty hard to dial in. I had to tell a real kid enthusiast who I helped get is African clawed frog setup together that I didn't think he was ready yet even though he had recently begun succeeding with A display species, bc Axos are just That Much harder. (He was around 9/10, but i am not 100% sure)
