Great video. I just discovered the problem today and am very grateful for this video. Idk why but I flip out every time and worry my self to death, get everything ready, study, do the job and then I am like wtf was I worried about?
I Just did gearbox, pump & hoses and was wondering WHY IS IT STILL LEAKING! oh, its the hydro boost... Glad I can do this with a cheap seal, THANK YOU!
Did you have any issues with low steering assist at idle I just did my pump hoses and gear box and I have a pulsating in my steering and brake pedal and no steering at idle I’m at a loss the hydroboost is the only thing I didn’t replace yet!
Thanks for the great video, you helped me replace the seals on my 01. I would advise anyone doing theirs to use plenty of power steering fluid to coat the seal before reassembly, I only applied a light coat and it caught and pinched when I put it back together the first time.
Thank you for this great video. It was very helpful. I should’ve finished the whole video because I didn’t realize that you need a new switch for the brake pedal! That was my fault but I do not have anymore leaks!
Crazy how one $8 piece of rubber can equate a $150 or so reman cost plus core. The job was tricky, but not that hard. There are a few things you forgot to mention that take finesse, but it's worth it to save $150 or more.
The brake switch can be reused. I reset it by taking it apart. I forget the specifics. It's been a couple months. But i think there is a smaii hole you can put a small drill bit into to release the ratchet mechanism. Then force the button back to reset the position without taking switch apart.
Tried reinstalling a new seal this way, seal got torn by piston. Had to reinstall new seal, remove the big spring, spring retainer, and push rod to see the contact between the lip seal and piston. Had to use a small pick to guide lip on seal around head of piston to seat properly. Then reinstall pushrod, spring, and retainer.
After doing this my brake pedal is going straight to the floor and I couldn't turn my wheel like the person was doing at the end of the video. Also I the pushrod was pretty solid and I couldn't get it replicate the video at 5:30. Please let me know if you have any advice. Not sure if I need to do the whole thing again. The part holding the rod with the spring on it and the plastic piece on the end of the spring were both very worn when I looked at them.
My 99 ram is leaking. You pointed out that the leak is coming from in between the master cylinder reservoir and the hydro booster. Should the first seal stop the leak where they separate? If the internal seal is leaking I don't see how it should get past the outer seal????? Just curious I know probably should change both but it would be a lot easier since I wouldn't have to pull the hydro boost and brake pedal.
My question is this: Are we talking about the SAME seal if it's leaking into the cab of the truck? Mine is not leaking at the joint between the brake reservoir and the Hydroboost. Mine is pouring into the cab directly out of the hole the brake rod comes out of under the dash. Mine is a 2014 RAM 3500 with the gasoline 6.4 Hemi.
@@juancarlosgomez7634Yes, the problem with it leaking directly into the cab WAS the hydroboost. And, BTW, it's super easy to change. I feared the worst. It looked quite intimidating tucked in under all that stuff, but it was a cakewalk to change. All kidding aside, I think it took me less than a half hour to pull the old one out and put the new one in. 1) Disconnect the brake booster and pull it forward slightly with all it's lines attached. 2) Then, remove the booster bolts at the firewall and the Brake pedal attachment. 3) Then, just pull it out with the (short) hard lines attached and reattach them to the new part before you put it in. 4) NOTE: You must replace the brakelight switch during this process as the switch is a "one-way" design. Once you remove it you can't reinstall it and still have it working correctly. - My power steering pump made a whining noise too because it was low on fluid due to the hydroboost leak. The brakes AND the power steering work off this one unit.
Only difference is you have to reprogram the brake switch on 4th gen +. It’s not mechanical. You have to use alfaobd to re learn via the abs module. Easy peasy.
Just ordered a kit for my 01 24v. Been chasing an odd brake pedal feel and bad power steering after a hose came loose. Trying to get my truck 100% again and looking forward to getting this thing rebuilt!
On my 98.5 dodge 3500 I have no pedal at all and my hydro booster is loud and causing vibration threw the pedal (well it was before it went all the way out) would this be the same issue?
The description of this video says: "If you are experiencing a power steering leak that is coming from near the firewall, in between the hydroboost and the brake master cylinder, chances are this seal is the issue!" .... Then multiple times in the comments it says that a firewall leak is not this seal. Can you shed some light?
Why can't you do all this with the rear half of the unit left in the vehicle? Once you get it all apart, you basically ignore the back half until it is time to reassemble it. It would dispense with all the work under the dash. You flat raters out there - what say you?
i did it this way. seating the one piston on that arm was a real pain in the ass took me like 30 minutes of finessing but if you go in at an angle it works fine. my unit still leaks and I will just be replacing it done with the headaches lol
I don't have the time or place to do this myself. I had my hydroboost changed with a used unit to save money now less than three years later I need another one at a cost of $800 + labour in my region. Dodge should be made to replace these free along with UV joints and transmissions. Anyone want to buy a 2003 Dodge 2500 diesel truck?!
Has anyone had a problem with the piston cutting the seal when going back together? With the lips facing that direction it seems the piston has to come from the other side.
Great video. I just discovered the problem today and am very grateful for this video. Idk why but I flip out every time and worry my self to death, get everything ready, study, do the job and then I am like wtf was I worried about?
I do the same thing! LOL. I do it in my head a million times before I actually do it! Better than diving in without preparing though.
Thanks for great video. I fixed one of these for a guy down the road. made a few bucks saved him big bucks napa wanted 350$ for a new unit.

Solid video, gonna do some research and see if its the same for the 3rd gens and if it is, im definitely gonna come back to this video
It should be the same for a 3rd gen

I just had my buddy watch and I adjusted it by the bracket bolts

Yeah same here
Really?
What about the break switch, did you have to replace that as well?
Some people just shouldnt try such things. Thats why there are repair shops.
@@timothyleyva1986 no you dont need a new switch.

Unfortunately not@@claytonheitman2406

We would recommend changing both, likely there are contaminants and if they're not both already shot they will be soon
Thx. I’ve got a leak on my HB on 2015 ram I assume it’s prolly this seal being the unit looks nearly the same. Again thx
No problem!
Excellent video guys!!!
Glad it helped.
I set a 2x4 under my brake pedal to hold it so it didn't get out of adjustment when i pulled the booster out
Nice
Is that large seal the one that causes tbe leak inside the cab ?
Not typically
Hi was wondering were can i get a new seal

It should not cause a noise.

Uffff my 2008 ram 3500 is leaking and the carpet is ruin, this repair will help me save money to buy the floor carpet, thanks
Not a problem, glad we could help!
Cant fix mine frome leaking through the fire wall.cant get it apart to replace the seals on the 1/2" rod.
Could this seal be the reason the power steering doesn’t work Or intermittently works?
Super helpful! Lots of talent

It sounds like you need a new hydroboost
Is it an absolute must to need a new break switch?
Did you ever find out lol
Good video. 👍
what’s that blue cap or container looking thing? i’ve got a leak from that
Has anyone else sheared the lip off of the seal, my piston does not have any relief to get it to let it start the seal like was done in the video.
It may be out of spec and require replacement. We recommend really lubricating the seal prior to install as well.

The leak caused by this seal is if the leak is coming from in-between the master cylinder and the booster.
Part number for the seal?

Has anyone had a problem with the piston cutting the seal when going back together? With the lips facing that direction it seems the piston has to come from the other side.
It can happen. The seal needs to be completely seated and oiled. It's easy for it to not be fully seated.
