It’s good for the category but I am tired of the glee people have against Disney. Also it’s Pixar the Oscars have a bias for. Frozen was the first time WDAS won the animated feature and apart from Brave from Pixar (and even then Wreck-It Ralph from WDAS should have won) and Big Hero 6 from WDAS all their wins were earned.

    I am Japanese 日本人です
We celebrate 2 wins for the first time in 15 years (since "Departures" and "The House of Small Cubes" in 2008)
Most of you must be wondering why "Godzilla Minus One" was not the Japanese submition of International film.
"Godzilla Minus One" was not that successful in Japan for a Godzilla film, and director Takashi Yamazaki is like Japanese Michael Bay, who started his career as a VFX guy. On the other hand, everyone thought famous Wim Wender's film was more Oscar-like especially after it won Cannes for the best actor.
This is why it was a huge surprise that "Godzilla Minus One" was very successful both commercially and critically overseas.
At Japanese Academy awards of the last week, which nobody even in Japan cares, "Godzilla" sweeped 8 categories including the best picture, while "Perfect Days" got 2 wins for the best director and best actor.
But it was of course too late for the Oscar international film.
In Japan, every one predicted "Godzilla" and "The Boy and the Heron" win
Producer Toshio Suzuki just revealed at a press conference that even though Hayao Miyazaki was pretending he did not care about the awards, he was waiting at his atelier the good news, Ghibli staff was watching the show and started to clap as soon as they heard the "The" of "The Boy and the Heron", And Suzuki ordered 3 Oscar statue for himself, Miyazaki, and to show off.
Also, everyone, do not forget that today is March 11th, 13 years after the Great East Japan Earthquake.

How do most Japanese feel about best picture going to a film like Oppenheimer, which tells the story of the atomic bomb from the American perspective? (It does show that the bomb is horrifying but I can see how Japanese people might not appreciate the way it told its story)

@@purekinema The most controvertial thing was "Barbemheimer" meme, where Barbie's hair looks like a mashrume cloud of atomic bombs. "Oppenheimer" will be seen since the end of March in Japan. Many people want to see it. Christopher Nolan is popular in Japan. When a Japanese IMAX theater screened "TENET" during COVID, Nolan sent his handwritten letter to the theater to show his gratitude. The reason why "Oppenheimer" was not premiered last summer was because it would hit August 6th and 9th, the days 2 bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Although some may concern that Japanese people are not depicted in the film, it will be successful for sure.

The take that Spider-Verse lost because the Academy dislikes comic-book films doesn't resonate - the first one won the category! This came down to the increased international presence and influence of the Oscar voting body, as also evidenced by Anatomy of a Fall winning screenplay, Zone of Interest winning sound, and Godzilla winning VFX. Who wouldn't want to take another opportunity to recognize Miyazaki?

    • @ClassicalMusic2002

I think it’s a combination of a lot of factors: Spider-verse was six months old when Boy and the Heron came out, the controversy over the summer about how poor the working conditions were for the animators on the film, and the fact that this is the middle film in a trilogy all hurt its chances here. Boy and the Heron came out at the right time, was considered by many people to be Miyazaki’s best since Spirited Away, and was incredibly popular with the international voting body. Not to mention it opened at #1 in the US box office in December!

@@ClassicalMusic2002I agree. Spider verse will win for the final film as it will actually have a proper ending that won't end on a cliffhanger. Besides, they've pretty much won everything anyway. They might nominate beyond the spider versus more categories depending on what happens. Thanks to the boy and the heron, animation is now recognized as more than just a genre. It's an art form, it is storytelling. This will allow beyond the spider verse to thrive as the academy is now more accepting and that animation will mean more to them in the future. Also, The Academy could give Phil Lorde and Chris Miller or even Kemp Powers and honorary Oscar later on for their contribution to the animation industry, paving the way and changing animation forever. This was a well-deserved win for Ghibli and a proper send off for Miyazaki if it truly is his last film.

Every use of sound design in that film was so effective and told the story. It was absolutely incredible to see it win Sound, especially over Oppenheimer (which was my favorite film of the year), and don't get me wrong the use of sound design in that film was still very effective, but The Zone of Interest used sound in such a brand new way and told the story. I was absolutely beyond excited that it won and it's still hard to believe now. So seeing it win Best Sound, was absolutely incredible, especially since it used sound design the best of any of the films that year. I'm glad I stuck to my guns in my Boy and the Heron prediction. I almost caved and put down Spider-Verse, but between the Miyazaki narrative and the fact that Spider-Verse did not get any nominations other than Animated Feature (neither did Boy and the Heron, but that put them both on an even playing field, so to speak), as well as its wins at Golden Gloibe and BAFTA kept giving me pause. I actually think Spider-Verse feeling like an incomplete film probably hurt it, as well as them already having given it to the first one and the fact that there's a third one coming. For the record, my pick for Animated Feature was actually Robot Dreams (which is a gorgeous meditation on friendship and battling loneliness), and while I am in awe of the animation in the second Spider-Verse film, and still love the characters and the humor, the cliffhanger was a sticking point for me, as it told me I shouldn't judge it as a complete story (there are other films with cliffhangers that feel like full narratives, this one did not).

@TheOscarExpert: The boy and the Heron had a complete narrative. It also had a stronger narrative surrounding it regarding its animation process. Spider-Verse lacked a proper conclusion and suffered from being the middle entry in a trilogy. This isn't any issue as the film has already won so much with fans, critics, animation awards and has won a total of 97 awards. The original one in Oscar which is enough to cement this franchise as oscar-winning. The creators of these films are going to walk away with a special honorary. Oscar for their contribution to changing the animation industry forever somewhere down the line. Besides, the creators of this film will be awarded for beyond the spider verse when that comes out. Boy and the heron has opened incredible doors to animation in general. The academy has now accepted that animation is an art form and not just a genre. It is filmmaking. It is storytelling and they fully recognize that. Is a proper send-off for Studio Ghibli if this is his final film. That's the case, he'd have walked away with three Oscars total. That's an incredible achievement and a proper send off to a legendary filmmaker. Well deserved

Hence, I was confused as to why people thought Oppenheimer was going to win in this category ( and Barbie never stood a chance at winning).

I'm so glad I stood my ground with Godzilla , War is Over and also. I was so back and forth on them until the last hour before I played in a couple of awards pool. But I didn't change my other picks I couldn't decide for Henry Sugar and Last Repair Shop. Bummer Lily didn't win, but it was really going to be 50/50 between Emma and her. Also glad I didn't go with Oppy for Production Design and Costume. When he opened up that he changed his picks to Oppy I went, ruh roh! :)

I missed a lot overall but I’m proud to have gotten Boy in the Heron sight unseen, it’s just like VFX a while back when everyone thought infinity had it and Oscar was like Actually first man I’m not into superheroes tbh

Love your channel and your predictions all year! I still the Academy is very much into prosthetics and totally changing your appearance - look at The Whale last year and even Golda's nomination this year. However, I just feel that Maestro did not win because it was not a well-liked movie whereas Poor Things was.

Well I am one of the VERY few who wanted Giamatti to win over Cillian Murphy. While I thought Cillian did well, I think this Giamatti best role and he sells that character incredibly well. Maybe it's because Holdovers was my favorite movie of the nominees but I just loved his snark, vulnerability and commitment. Heck I even enjoyed Jeffrey Wright more than Cillian but that's just me.

Gosh, the Giamatti stans.... He has done this role 563 times, it is time for new roles. Murphy is one of the BEST wins in the category, hope your basic taste improves. And what do yo mean by "even"?! Wright has better body of work than all the nominees combined, his work in Westworld and in Angels in America is out if this world.
