  • This is my first reaction to Disturbed singing Down With The Sickness!
So far the only song I've heard from Disturbed is their cover of Sound of Silence, and this was so so so different!
Link to the original video: • Disturbed - Down With ...
    Thanks for the recommendation!!
    Love you, Sabina

Just want to point out that David managed to spend 20 YEARS singing heavy metal like this without completely blowing his voice and then STILL managed to belt out Sound of Silence with those pure tones.

I wouldn't say we were surprised by sound of silence. Most metal fans tend to be pretty diverse in our music tastes, but it's always fun to watch a non fan hear the normal sound for the first time

just so u all know This song is about how society treats people who are "different." A lot of people think they are "sick" and "wrong" and want nothing to do with them.
In the middle of the song, lead singer David Draiman acts out a skit where he is being abused by his mother (not in the radio version). Finally, he builds up enough courage and hits her right back. This is used to symbolize how "mother society" abuses "her" children for not being the way "she" thinks they should. "She" keeps doing it until "her" children get sick of it and are so angry with her and themselves they go out and get revenge for it, most likely by killing the people that hurt them ("here it comes, get ready to die!") A good example of this would be the school shootings that go on around the country.
Getting "Down With The Sickness" means accepting people for who they are so we can all function better.

Reaaaaally nice. Gained another subscriber here. Good work. Claps, thumbs up and "hail to you, my champion"!

I like people saying how different the sickness is when people who are disturbed fans weren't all that surprised by the sound of silence we all knew David could sing very beautiful ala darkness, fade to black, overburdened, and them having done phenomenal covers prior.

Yep, I've been listening to Disturbed since the late 90s and the Sound of Silence cover was more or less in line with what I expected. As you said we all knew David could sing well, and he can also move in and out of his growl at will and uses it to great effect.

  • @adam_mawz_maas
    @adam_mawz_maas 3 года назад +1

Note that there was a huge stylistic shift from their first album to later albums as Draiman had some vocal issues (a failed stomach valve meant that he was throwing small amounts of stomach acid into his vocal chords when doing the 'monkey noises'. Surgery and a shift in vocal style solved that)
It's worth noting also that unlike many metal vocalists, Draiman is a trained vocalist. However he's a trained Cantor (Jewish temple singer/chanter) rather than being trained in a western tradition. That means he manages his voice in some unusual ways.

Yes this is very much at the opposite side of Disturbeds spectrum but I feel the majority of their music is more melodic than this, more a blending of the two polar opposites of Down With The Sickness and The Sound Of Silence. I enjoyed your reactions and hope you do try more Disturbed!
From their harder side: Stricken, Liberate, Stupify, Dropping Plates.
More middle ground: Inside The Fire, Prayer, Remember, Asylum, Indestructible.
Softer ballads: Uninvited Guest, Darkness, A Reason To Fight, The Light, Hold On To Memories.

I think there is a lot more to David Draiman then we see when he's performing. He's a pretty complex and compassionate individual. I first got acquainted with his song Down With The Sickness and this band, when he went on tour in the Middle East in support of our troops. That totally impressed me about him and the band. The story of his girlfriend pretty tragic. Would love to sit and chat with the man about things in general. I think it would be a very interesting and lengthy conversation.

Always found the comparison of Sound of Silence cover to the Disturbed original works interesting. In every sense, Sound of Silence is just as dark, the delivery is just completely different. It starts from a state of apathy to anger/frustration, where as a song like Down with the Sickness starts from that anger and digs deeper into the cause.

Hi Sabina, just discovered your channel by reccomendations after listening Nightwish recently, and I've seen your reaction to "Ghost Love Score" and went down the rabbit hole to see more on how you react to the artists I enjoy listening to, as well. I've seen your reaction to "The Sound of Silence" which is a cover of Simon & Garfunkel, as you discovered :), AND, which I find quite funny, I'd like to recommend you THIS ruclips.net/video/ei3IaJDgZGk/видео.html, which in turn is a cover of what you're listeing to right here :D Hope you enjoy... oh, yes and this is the uncensored version (why would a cover be censored, anyway?). Finally, a quick word about your reactions, I really, really like how you put annotations on the screen while you're listening and not pause the songs, I like how descriptive you get about what you hear and that's fairly accurate with what I feel while listening too... keep up the good work!
