Excellent clip. Channel 5 only being a month old at this point but managed to bag the Mrs Doubtfire terrestrial premiere. Had no idea Stella Artois was their first film sponsor, before they went over to Channel 4 a year later, and had a very successful partnership for 9 years. Don't suppose you have the ad breaks during Mrs Doubtfire? Would be good to see.
Channel 5 was fairly weak, to put it mildly, in its early years. But its strength was scheduling. Although it hardly had the hottest shows in town, it knew exactly where to position them. It didn't pit soap against soap, news against news. It cleverly captured the viewer who was looking for something other than Coronation Street, etc. Granted, the opposition were still caning them in the ratings. But they picked up just enough to keep them afloat. They did well to even survive. It was a tin pot station, full of programming which barely passed the broadcast standard, but they managed to steadily build upon what they had. It took a very long time, well over a decade, but I'd say they did become a serious contender eventually. A sneaky poaching of Neighbours, here. A revival of Big Brother, there. And it started to play in the big league. I'd say that it's easily a stronger station than Channel 4, now. Granted, Channel 4 is a wasteland now and not a high benchmark to surpass. But the fact that Channel 5 have gotten even that far is miraculous.
