Unless you're in a tight area like maneuvering in and out of a dock or hauling something really heavy more often than not you shift like a 13 speed because the gears are so close together. Yes in game also.
As a truck driver, I have used the first gear many times, if you weigh 44 tonnes and got a 440hp engine, you use the first gear. You'd kill the clutch pretty quickly if you used second with heavy loads...
@@isaacsrandomvideos667 its probabky more fun as your pov is high on the road, lots of blindspots. And speeding up with long and heavy truck is more challenging, thats a plus
YES! REMEMBER SWITCH MODE !!!!! I was going crazy trying to figure out why did i order an on-off-on switch, then i saw you mentioning switch mode ! You're a legend!
Just made one of these following the instructions in the video. Ordered all parts via links except the switches and actual 3D printed part. I had to find equivalent switches on Amazon and a local firm to do the printing. Instructions are superb and the shifter works like a dream. Thank you for sharing.
I can see improved gear shifter as well makes you drive like real trucker - staying in overtaking lane for no reason even when not overtaking anyone :D
call me crazy but i actually prefer this over the SKRS trucking sim shifter, with this DIY switch setup you dont have to change anything out between trucking and racing games which is the main reason i never invested in any kind of attachment. this is brilliant
love this although most modern trucks only have 16 gears and are automatic, since i passed my truck al long time ago iv probably used a manual once maybe twice but considering this is a game its definitely adds much more realism if you have to change gears
@@lilhotrod051906 I used a 197x113x63mm for my second one. On this first I used the size smaller but found that the buttons were a bit close together which made labeling the difficult.
@@lilhotrod051906 Sorry, I thought this was about the Button Box. I purchased the switch holder for the shifter on ebay as I do not have a 3d printer, it cost about AUD30,00. It is is 4cm long on each arm and 2.25cm high and 2cm wide.
Hi great video I built two of these last night one mine one for a friend and it works great thanks for your videos just about to make two button boxes 😎👍
Made mine today! Only hiccup - the switches took a number of weeks to arrive from China, and I used a bit too much heat soldering one of them. Which damaged it, and I haven't been able to repair it despite the mechanism appearing to be quite simple. I've ordered a few more, and have used another rectangular switch in the meantime which actually fits wholly inside the hole.
Kinda wish that this had an extra button for the Jake Brake... now that would be awesome. Any chance you can design a 3d print for that? Basically an extra button on the right (for us who drive on the left) that activates the jake brake.
I love it. I bought a MAN gear handle which I plan on wiring up to your button box design, but I love the look of this and if anything it looks less clunky than the one out of the MAN truck :D
I know the video is a bit old, but i'm looking into making one for myself, but i'm a bit confused about the joystick controller. Does it just work, when you plug the two plugs into the board or do you need to program them in any way?
@Steven McLeod - Did you find a solution to this? I'm having the same issue now. I've built it correctly and in the USB game controller settings in windows I can see the two switches work, but when I try to assign the switches in the game itself (ETS in my case) it doesn't recognise/detect them. Really hoping you found a solution and can share it with me :)
Haha, he makes this awesome shifter to make the game more realistic and then goes and over-revs the crap out of his truck at every shift like its a WRC car. Still, great idea - thumbs up for you.
And yes I know your are going to ask so here is the answer ;) - Trucks reach their max HP and torque at 1500 RPM. Anything over 1500 and you are just burning extra fuel and damaging your motor. Its not a car my friend - its completely different. The best test? Put the game back in "automatic transmission" and then floor the truck. Watch the shift points. :) Happy simming.
hi, your video is beautiful but you can't see the plate where it is connected or the cables that you soldered and connected, do you mind making another video where it is connected Thanks Many Regards Claudio
Hey, you should consider getting a head tracking device. I just got EdTracker and it is easily my favourite piece of tech I have bought in a long time.
I assume you use pedals when you drive, but when changing the range before changing gears (like going from 6 to 7), does clutch work in this game and do you clutch in every time because i never noticed your speed drop because of a downshift or a change in the way you drive because of an upshift
Depends on the truck European and japanese trucks typically have syncromesh American and chinese trucks typically have no syncromesh (crash box) With syncromesh you clutch every gear change, with a crash box you float shift (no clutch when shifting)
Here's a litte tip if you decide to go with the switches shown in the video, as I did. Do not use the soldering iron for too long when soldering the wires to the terminals on the switch. Too much heat will ruin the switch, and it will not click anymore.
Is there a specific switch to use? I have a knob printed, but the only switch I could find locally is a simple on-off rocker switch, it's 3 terminal but the third terminal is for the lighting of the switch
I think this could be even better if you use those cheap car gear knobs you can get on ebay, drill holes in it and install switches in those holes. Also, could this be done with the keyboard pcb? Like the one you used for handbrake?
I like your thinking! Already working on this for a Fanatec mod. You could use a keyboard pcb, although the toggles when on would keep pressing the button, so something to consider and test.

Can't we just use 6 gear? My g920 with shifter has no acceleration whatsoever. I press hard on accelerator and until gear 5, no more than 24 km/h. What should cause that? Thanks
Hello, awesome video and amazing idea. I did exactly as you said, but when I connect it to the pc, one switch is always open, I’ve tried resoldering but didn’t solve the issue. Would be great if you could help. Thanks!
Since you used toggle switches and not buttons, does this mean that everytime you need to shift on mid/high gears you need to put the toggle on and then back to its original position? Please enlighten me as i havent tried h-shifter mode in ATS/ETS.

It's configurable. You can use a single button press to change modes (ranger/splitter) or you can set the "toggle switch" option and they will be modifiers to the gears.
Awesome video, but I have a problem. When I want to assing the button it does not do anything, I have already check if the buttons work and they do as a game controller. I hope you help me
