    Seems to be very user friendly and probably the cheapest 3d analysis and design software I've seen on the market. Is this your main "go to" software? Since this tutorial is focusing on connections , can you design moment end plates that protrude below and above the top and bottom flange of beam with bolts above and below and stiffeners in the column aligned to the top and bottom of end plate ?

    Great video many thanks Robin. Funny if I was doing anything like this, think I'd want another L bracket underneath that one, bolted to both sections to provide redundancy. Shows I'm not a structural engineer. I assume for the fixing shown that bolt tightening is perhaps more important than you might first think e.g. to get an even spread of loads between the bolts. When things don't fit on site (to be avoided if possible) then I would have concern that site cutting/welding/drilling could invalidate the calculations. Anyhow interesting video. I was thinking the software might suggest the plate size and number of fixings.

      Hi John. Like you, I came from a mechanical engineering mindset and had to drastically rearrange my brain before accepting structural engineering design philosophy! Steel connection design is very much led by steel fabrication speed and ease of site erection, thus fin plates and angle cleet connections are fairly standard in the industry. All the steel is workshop fabricated, so no site welding, and hole positioning can be extremely acurate. Bolt capacity is based totally on steel bearing to bearing, with no allowance for bolt tightening (i.e. friction), and this is perhaps why a lower grade of steel is used for the plate so that some plastic deformation can happen to spread the loads between the bolts!
