I keep coming back to this song because of the line "I cannot love, I want to be alone", which feels to me some of the most truthful, heartbreaking things even put in a song. Her face even breaks a little when she sings it at 3:09.
it just seems unreal enough the existence of a person that can conceive such powerful stuff. but this person does exist, it's Laura Marling, and the world shines brighter when she sings. I am astonished.
about 75 percent of the music i've listened to this past year has been Laura's. I admit, I do grow tired of some songs but when I try to find other artists, none can capture my attention and captivate me in the way that she does. :) This one in particular is currently my absolute favorite. Someone help me, I have Marling fever. :(
One does not call Laura Marling "a cute blonde little girl" if they've spent a decent amount of time listening to her songs. Her music is not little, & she's a goddess.
That is nonsense to me. This is exactly what she plays on the album and Ethan John's production is just so beautiful on it, adding movement and deepness without being overly present.
lol so very sorry to let you know that this is NOT what is sung on the album, the two versions differ a great deal. also, i'm really sorry you don't see the difference. this version is light years more beautiful than the album's. not to bash the album or anything. i get it is what it is. it's just... not this version. which i love very well.
I can relate, I once listened to a single album (four songs mostly) for about four months. It never became boring, I weaned myself because the prospect that this would go on for the rest of my life became a bit frightening. The album is Melissa Ferrick - 70 People at 7000 Feet. Live concert, and first place I will go once I have the time machine.
I don't see any reaction that is over the top about her, including my calling her goddess. I love her for her music, not for looks, & when you live in a world where people adore Katy Perry or Britney Spears or any other pop singers out there, finding an artist like her, who plays that kind of music is like finding treasure. Everyone has different opinion about everything, she may not be a goddess to you, but to me & thousands of people out there, she has every right to be called that.
have you heard tallest man on earth? He got me hooked in a similar way... try and get past the intial harsh nasality of his voice and you might find some absolute gems. (e.g. love is all, the dreamer, the gardener, to name a few) Him and Marling for me are two of the best singer/songwriters playing right now..
I think we just differ in expressions. I think I drooled the first few times I listened to this song, Crawled Out of the Sea is among my ten or so all-time favourites (and that list includes pieces by Beethoven and Bach) and in fact triggered me to start learning the guitar myself. I also think that she is very beautiful. That said, "Her Message" completely eludes me, and I haven't yet erected altars for her. I am still able to notice that her concert was abysmally short.
That's done on purpose so that there's musical continuity throughout the album. It's similar to how an author will have thematic consistencies throughout a book.
@jennaw23 there's also a version of it on youtube (again just concert footage but good quality) with the title "Laura Marling, 9/22/11, New Untitled Song" . Enjoy!
@jennaw23 google "laura marling I was an eagle". The only footage is of her playing it live in chicago but it's pretty good quality. Most of the links have a video of it.Love her!
I think that this The live version and the album version are different but that does not make the album version wrong! When Laura sings live it's less complex but maybe the album version is where she wants to be?
I am a bit sad the album version of this song differs somewhat from this one. It just feels like a bit of soul have been lost on it's way to the album. I will always cherish with fondness this version
@Yoursaffectionately uh yeah thats a great lyric! if i could i would have listed the entire song. and every song she's ever written lets be honest. its quite Godly how good she is
@Whattheheckybecky I as well! I couldn't seem to see the name logo on it anywhere except in a live version of Sophia I was like the first 3 letters of it. It starts with an A from my memory. No much help though >.
You should check out Keaton henson. He's nothing like Marling but sings with such honesty and passion! I recomend this to you cos I too have not listened to anything else but Laura Marling (And Johnny flynn and M&S) for a long time and something diffent is always nice.
(Fun fact: I might be forced to visit the next Katy Perry concert around here, chaperoning some teens. Yay! Awesome! I hope they have a sound-proof dad bar.)
@ssjsonicssj, @conorzzy: Finally saw her live. A bit of a disappointment, I have to say. Most songs were played with the band, which I don't particularly care for, it was very short (~75 minutes), and this song was in a weird slow version. I'm still in love with her though.
Ok... the thing is, I really dislike what she did with this song on the album... I love LM, I think she is truly incredible, and her latest album is breath taking and complex and interesting and wonderful. But this song... like this... was perfect. Why would you change a single bit? *sigh*

Man. That fever still hasn't broken. Lol
In my mind, I've always referred to this song as "new Laura Marling song", thanks to this vid.
I can't believe this is 11-years old. 😅
She looks so happy singing this. Laura Marling is such a great artist, especially because it seems like she loves what she does.
Brilliant and marvellous laura as always💛
One does not call Laura Marling "a cute blonde little girl" if they've spent a decent amount of time listening to her songs. Her music is not little, & she's a goddess.
Love this... Just watch how casual the mixing desk woman is... She knows a perfect performance is coming and can relax and sip water!
laura. i love you. please dont ever stop writing and singing stuff this amazing.
God I love this version.. I'm afraid the album version of this song didn't work for me, but this is just.. .well it's perfect :)
+Slapped Yak Agreed. Whenever I hear her in live settings like this I'm always impressed, but the records are only good.
That is nonsense to me. This is exactly what she plays on the album and Ethan John's production is just so beautiful on it, adding movement and deepness without being overly present.

not to bash the album or anything. i get it is what it is. it's just... not this version. which i love very well.
can't believe this didn't make it onto the new album. it's so good!
ive beenn listening to this over and over..
Just when I think I have gone to music heaven, she does something else that enraptures me. You go, girl.
The 4th album is going to be SO GOOD, between this song and "I was an eagle". Oh man, can't wait! :)
This woman is absolutely spectacular in everyway I know of.
Can't wait for her new album. Omg omg omg.
The lyrics are absolutely perfect.. No.. The whole thing is absolutely genius.
I don't see any reaction that is over the top about her, including my calling her goddess. I keep thinking I must know all of her best songs, then every day I find another one. Where does her talent end?!
thanks for writing such strong, beautiful lyrics that i can actually relate to. xo
I agree except for the growing tired part.. i just can't get bored of her stuff. she's such a great songwriter!
i hope she will be writing songs forever
Always amazed.
OH my gosh... This is SO amazing. literally.. dying. i'm dying.
This is a phenomenal song :)
ohh i love this A LOT
Awesome song!
great new talent...being in the business myself , keep up the great work Laura
Laura is a wonderful talent :)
Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake? Just my 2cents. She is wonderful and so very rare in our musical world.
She is better than Joni Mitchell, Nick Drake, and even Leonard Cohen. Better than all of them. Better than all of them by far.
Well you can't deny this is inspired by Neutral Milk Hotel's album "In the Aeroplane Over The Sea". And that is a huge compliment.
have you heard tallest man on earth? He got me hooked in a similar way... try and get past the intial harsh nasality of his voice and you might find some absolute gems. (e.g. love is all, the dreamer, the gardener, to name a few)

So charming and beautiful!
@Whattheheckybecky thought you meant tuning...the guitar its a Spanish brand named Admira. The model is Malaga.
for all her songs I prefer it just her and the guitar. Such purity
@Yoursaffectionately its always a relief to know you're not alone in the world :) and hey we are wasting valuable Laura Marling listen time! haha :P
I keep letting slip that I'm going to see her at Sydney Opera House. Oh bollocks, I've done it again!!
anyone with laura marling fever, joanna newsum is also fantastic..cant wait for lauras new album
Beautiful song and beautiful young woman
Something in her pieces sounds like Led Zeppelin. Love it.
Giorgi Kankava some riffs are similar like that’s the way from Led Zeppelin
Captivating.
how did this not make it on an album!!!!!!??????
It's called "Pray for Me" and it's on the record Once I Was an Eagle. Phenomenal song and album.
NEW ALBUM IN MAY! IT'S CALLED "Once I Was An Eagle!"
That's done on purpose so that there's musical continuity throughout the album. It's similar to how an author will have thematic consistencies throughout a book.
EPIC SONG! ♥
Does anybody know how to play this?
@jennaw23 there's also a version of it on youtube (again just concert footage but good quality) with the title "Laura Marling, 9/22/11, New Untitled Song" . Enjoy!
God, that guitar sounds fucking gorgeous.
@foonr judging by the interview it was written after the recording of the album
LAURA IS A GODDESS. (no shame)
Estou orando por ti Laura Marling!
it's incurable, and trust me, you don't want to cure it ;)
@jennaw23 google "laura marling I was an eagle". The only footage is of her playing it live in chicago but it's pretty good quality. Most of the links have a video of it.Love her!
@razmataz13drums hahaah exactly!! It's good to know you appreciate her as much as I do!!
@Yoursaffectionately it really really is. i love the way she sings 'That not love for it trying.
That is God and his lying'
I think that this
The live version and the album version are different but that does not make the album version wrong! When Laura sings live it's less complex but maybe the album version is where she wants to be?

This covers some of the themes of A Creature really well, no, I don't know why she didn't put it in but oh well.
Anyone know which guitar she is using?
I really want to know.
@ssjsonicssj I think I might have to second that emotion!
Gorgeousness, 💚it
does anyone have any idea what the tuning is for this ? :)
Does anyone know what tuning this is in? Its so pretty
Sounds like open D major tuning, maybe down a half step to D flat major.
@Whattheheckybecky I as well! I couldn't seem to see the name logo on it anywhere except in a live version of Sophia I was like the first 3 letters of it. It starts with an A from my memory. No much help though >.
I suggest you listen to Diane Cluck, they are tuned in to the same frequency
And where he's from I long to know.
I couldn't agree more, it actually breaks my heart to hear the album version and see her perform that version too, not this one instead )':
boo!
You should check out Keaton henson. He's nothing like Marling but sings with such honesty and passion! I recomend this to you cos I too have not listened to anything else but Laura Marling (And Johnny flynn and M&S) for a long time and something diffent is always nice.
2:25-2:36; 3:30-3:39
whats this tuning?
AGREED
@jencsk1234 You guys gotta hear 'Master Hunter'. They keep on comin' :)
@razmataz13drums Me too.. it's the most beautiful song ever
I AM THE SAME WAY. ITS INTENSE
NEW ALBUM IN MAY1
@yvranx It's because of music like hers, I could live with being blind.
What does "run in tow" mean?
Quineando run behind
@yvranx Yes I figured it out thank you :)
Open G (except the first string is a D)
DGDGBD
(Fun fact: I might be forced to visit the next Katy Perry concert around here, chaperoning some teens. Yay! Awesome! I hope they have a sound-proof dad bar.)
@razmataz13drums and.. I cannot love, I want to be alone. I will not love, I want to be alone. UGH she's my favourite person
and I had lost my mind
She changed God to the devil for the album version!
At last real musicians seem to be making their mark on the musical landscape :)
So what's her message then?
@ssjsonicssj, @conorzzy: Finally saw her live. A bit of a disappointment, I have to say. Most songs were played with the band, which I don't particularly care for, it was very short (~75 minutes), and this song was in a weird slow version.

@brooke0304 Thank you : )
Top drawer
