I love that you guys chose to focus on a story of failure and the lessons learned from it rather than another classic tale of effort/victory. So many times in life you try and try but you just don’t get the results you want even though you 'did the right thing', were super passionate, and worked really hard for it. Looking at tv and movies it seems like all you have to do to get anything you want is to do those things but the reality is that sometimes it just doesn’t happen for whatever reason. Thanks for choosing to showcase that.

Also, the 1% margin probably is an arbitrary. I would guess that their speed detection equipment probably has an approximately 0.4% margin of error, give or take

This one spoke to me. A warbird fan all my life who used to camp out at the Madera Gathering of Warbirds and troll the flightline with a pocketful of cash, I've gotten to go 400 mph with Bill Destefani in the back of Mangia Pane, the stock Mustang he raced before Strega. I flew twice in Bill's P-40 with Fred Sebby as piIot; one of those flights ended up on the cover of the 25th Anniversary Issue of Air Classics. I've seen Bill deadstick Strega into Madera with the belly covered with oil. I was lucky enough to shake Steve Sr.'s hand at OSH and thank him for all he's done. I own a Fighter Rebuilders T-shirt, and wear it proudly. Now I'm building my own "warbird"... an RV-8 that will be named "Falsifighter". Yes... this spoke to me. Thanks so much for sharing... for chasing those records... and for keeping them flying! And on a personal note, if I ever get the chance to meet Karen Hinton, I'm going to give her a bouquet of roses. Because she gets it. Love you all...
I’m a warbird fan as well but I’ve done so much research on military planes that it bores me and I’m really interested in the hundreds of different kinds of civilian aircraft especially the old ones

This is NOT a video game, this is as real as it gets: vintage P-51 at 500+ mph. You won't die sitting on your couch playing a video game. People like the Hinton family put their lives on the line to push the boundaries of what is possible in human mechanical achievement.
in the 70's when i was a kid..i got a COX P-51 Mustang..the chrome one..for Christmas..it was absolutely gorgeous..4 bladed prop..yellow nose cone..i was the envy of the neighborhood kids :) my dad told me we would fly it in the spring time (we lived in Chicago) finally ...FINALLY..a warm spring day presented itself..hey dad can we fly my airplane..(i had been dying all winter to fly it) he said sure son..so i had it all ready to go..we ran the string out..attached it to the plane..fueled it up..started it up..i was about to go to the control handle..he says "son you better let my try it first to make sure it works ok"..ok dad..he takes it off..its flying through the air..actually it was very fast..sparkling in the sun..so he starts doing loops with it..1st was great..2nd one....well....i never got to fly it..
That's better than the first flight on the garage roof where my dad flew it around the roof 2 times before the control lines wrapped around my neck. The prop cut the lines and the plane flew off into the bushes. It was not a pleasant day for me. I still have the Wen Mac .049 engine 60+ years later.

@@ferrelx--I got a Chrome P51 Cox with I thing .20 engine for Christmas in maybe 1962 or 63 in Puerto Rico. I was 10-11 years old. Beautiful thing. Reading the instructions in English I, after a few tries managed to start it over my bed with the help of my father. Gas smelled strange, but i loved it. Smell stayed in my room for days on a row, so my mother prohibited me from starting the engine on my bedroom. Read further how to fly it, went with my younger brother to the park and doing a lot of PIO's I managed to fly and land it. Flew it many times until i traded it for a bigger one. Became Commercial Pilot later with help from ROTC. Love that P51.
Steve, you will do it. Amazing to see a young guy (with an old soul) like this making history. This is tough to do and Steve will be the one to do it. Amazing bird as well. Sweet, sweet Merlin purring (loudly) and making HP. Having had opportunity to fly a P-51 makes this larger than life for me. You guys have built a beautiful bird that is more than capable of doing what you want to achieve. Persist man!
I remember watching Steve Sr. on the ABC Wide world of sports back in the 70's when I was a kid. I have always had a great respect for him that continues to this day. What a great production, and I'm glad to see old Voodoo still doing her thing!!!!
Great story, don't give up! I love old warbirds, worked on Tomcats when I was younger. Helping to refresh old WW2 era aircraft as museum pieces has been the most fun I've ever had. I can't imagine the level of dedication needed to attempt breaking this record.
At the start of this month I was at Planes Of Fame, expecting the presentation and flight of a P-38 Lightning. Instead, this guy came up and first said something along the lines of "I'm not a really good people person, and i'm not great with technology (He has a Powerpoint in the backround), so sorry if I screw this up." He told us his story on how he got started with air racing, and got into more details on the engines - how many are blown each year, and the amount of flying time they'll get on average before they're replaced. I also got to see "Voodoo" fly. Voodoo is actually the name of an air racing team, when he started for the team, their plane had it's share of problems, but with time he sorted out kinks and brought the team to glory. It was really fun to hear some of his story. I never knew of his relation to the museum's owners though, I thought he was an 'Honored Guest' when i first saw him speak. I loved this video, I learned even more about him, and the production quality was gr8 8/8.
Excellent video with audio to die for. Rolls Royce Merlin cranking all it has is music to my ears. Keep up the excellent work but one part of this story saddens me..NEVER miss a chance to tell your dad you love him EVER and father to your son. Wish i could tell my dad one more time.... Keep up the good work men....success is within your grasp.
As an avid fan of aviation I totally enjoyed this video. Very well done and informative. I do hope Steve Hinton Jr. and his wonderful family continue to follow the tradition of preserving those beautiful WW2 Birds. Thank you!
A great vid, wish he could have made the record, and he will in the future. I have seen both Hintons win races, and sadly saw Steve Sr go down in the Red Baron. In my 50 plus years as a pilot I know one thing for sure, the Hinton men are a pair of the most talented aviators in the world
Whyy is it, the P51 Mustang remains to this day one of the best looking WWII aircraft. Othar craft from that era have their own appeal, but the P51, IMO, stands apart. Beautiful vintage airplane.
I prefer the bf-109 series a shame no one's going to fly that old bird in a tournament. Especially considering what it represented as the best of German aeronautical engineering at its time.
Michael Mao I much prefer the lines and looks of the BF-109. I think it looked far better than any P-51 and especially starting with the F variant started looking even better.
I have sooo many thoughts about this video... First and foremost, an absolutely incredible effort on the part of the whole family !! I truly hope you all give it another try. Second, I was wondering ( among others ) why the P-40 in the thumbnail? That`s what made me click on this video to begin with. Third, the fact you went to Idaho for this record is intriguing. One, because the wife and I are moving to Idaho by end of June `19, and even more coincidental, we are moving to a little town called Challis...in Custer County !! Sadly his name will be largley unremembered outside of a small community because no one gives a shit about planes anymore. In the days of Curtis and Hughes, flight was magical, a marvel that represented a new age of man. Now, people sit in lounge chairs with big screen tv's at 45,000 feet doing 600MPH and get pissed off when their drinks take too long to come. No one gives a shit anymore, sadly. To me though, nothing sounds cooler than that Merlin whailing at full throttle. I kind of wonder where this family got their time/money to pursue this for generations though... Seems expensive. I like that B-25 in their hanger though. My grandpa was a B-25 pilot in WW2, his group was the 81st Earthquakers, stationed in Burma. He had some scary moments but the plane always got him back.
@Agent J I did. They were in a position to buy aircraft for less than a shitty pickup truck costs today. Now, they are worth multiple millions. Imagine, when values started to rise, they sold extras to other collectors- they also have an amazing facility where they have been doing exceptional aviation work for 4o+ years. They started simple, with junk hulks stored in friends back yards. All shoestring budget. No self entitles bullshit. Just hard work and tenacity, like I said earlier.

Awesome work guys, super professional, I was blown away by the first pass straight line speed. Keeping working you will nail that record. 1 percent separates the legends from the rest never a truer statement. I’m a big fan stay safe.
I saw Steve Jr. race this very Mustang at Reno in 2017. It was gorgeous, the sound still thunders in my memory. Voodoo was the class of the field. I've never seen anyone fly as low to the ground as Steve did that week, a perfect line. Voodoo did not win the final gold race as the engine began to let go as it entered the final lap. Still, Steve nearly pulled it off The race was epic.
I strongly suggest trying to get emotionally close to your dad. I had the same basic businesslike relationship with my dad. Now its too late for me to have more.
@Agent J Interesting question. I'm not sure that I would have wanted it but I do feel that I should have tried to find out. Obviously everyone's situation is different. This one just struck a chord with me, maybe because my dad and I spent a lot of time working on airplanes together as well (nothing like that beast though:)

I love this story, and the way you put this video together. I also loved seeing the Navion sitting on the tarmac at the air strip at 6:12. I grew up in my dads Navion, and love those old planes. That was a Mustang wanna-be, designed by the same company that originally designed the P-51, North American. The design was sold to the Ryan Aircraft company which put it into production.
Beautiful plane and an old classic powertrain. Surprised me to see the old rolls royce marlin engine in it. These classic historic machines are a perfect example of where we are today. I love it and their history!!
Animated Airlines I would think they would think of it as a model t kind of thing just because of how many were made, whereas nowadays planes are extremely expensive and get more of a job done

At least 15 million Model Ts were made (there were roughly 30 million Volkswagen Beetles made.) The Ford factory assembly line was set up so that one Model T Ford was completed roughly every hour and a half.

@@maxwellharris507 yeah but 4000bhp coming from 27L V12, that's 148bhp/l is pretty low by modern racing standard, and it's very unreliable. Even back in the 70's we got formula-1 engine churning out 1000bhp from of a little 1.5L engine. 3
@@maxwellharris507 *grammar massacre warning* @Maxwell Harris it's a piston engine so not much difference than car engine, except than the fuel used, and the RPM redline. Stock aviation piston engines usual redline at only 2500 rpm to make the engine understress because it had to cruise at almost full throttle much of the time. For this race RPM limit is not an issue as the plane just need to do several passes at full speed. This test is done at very low altitude anyway so a car engine could be used with few modifications.
By saying that the speed monitoring equipment may be off and then assigning 1% to it is arbitrary. First you’re assuming the measuring equipment is off without actual data to support the fact, thats arbitrary. Then your assigning that it’s off by 1% where did 1% come from? Why not 1.25%? So the 1% is arbitrary. Stop bring stupid.
Great cinematography and sound. Aircraft are a passion for me. I look at Steve Hinton Jr as a adult and see the little boy that appeared in the Mel Gibson movie Forever Young from several years ago.
100% right. Modern jets are much easier and safer to fly, specially on emergencies.. I flew DC-3's and other WW2 airplanes as cargo pilot in the 1980's. When i went to fly jets i could not believe how easy to fly they were.. Incredible difference..
Patently untrue. Think about who were flying these airplanes in war time. 19 and 20 year old kids with all of about 250 hours under their belt before shipping off to England to serve in combat units. The P-51 has a lot of go juice, but it's not terrifically hard to fly. The people that made the P-51 out to be this horrible airplane to fly are the people who can afford them (doctors, lawyers, the uber wealthy) who usually aren't pilots primarily. If you can handle basic stick and rudder skills you most likely have no issues flying a P-51.
A total cinderella story? I'm not trying to belittle the person, what he learned, what he achieved, or overcame. But let's be real for a moment. He was born with a pretty big silver spoon and the fact he has a multi-million dollar Mustang to conduct this story shows that. Plus his entire family is already well experienced in aviation. This is no cinderella story. This is a boy who was born lucky and wealthy enough to even attempt such records with a family heritage doing so. Congrats on achieving something very difficult to obtain. But you definitely did not start from the dirt to reach such heights.

@@basilisk7201 I think that's an exaggeration of the logic. But 1% is too big. But still.. it is faster. 0.001% or 0.002% is like .5-1mph of a speed gap and that is still considered faster. Just like cars 199 vs 200mph
I wonder if they could get any faster if they used a cooling system similar to what was used in the He-100. But that might also need a completely redesigned aircraft.
@@HUEEY It's not about heating, it's about aerodynamics. The cooling system used in the He-100 didn't need radiators. The removal of holes and protuberances from the aircrafts fuselage made it way more efficient. If I recall correctly, the He-100 broke several speed records thanks to that.
Around 570 mp/h is the barrier you don't wanna cross with this planes. Plus the engines are maxed out, the amount of hp the race built RR Merlin can put out is at 3600-3800 hp. That hasn't changed since the early 80's. The pinnacle are the aerodynamics. Plus the boil off cooling system you mean was used in the P51 Galloping Ghost and some Seafuries. Search "Galloping Ghost" and "September Fury" here on RUclips...
@Aleluia that’s what I’m saying there are many factors at play here. But I do agree that the he100s cooling system will make the aircraft way more aerodynamic. The only problem I see is that the he100 hand a way less powerful engine which did not produce nearly as much heat as a “overclocked” v12 Merlin.
@@HUEEY There is the only Mustang ever converted to a boil off cooling system similarto the He 100. And yes, it's the one that spectacularly crashed at the 2011 Reno Air Races. The conversion and the loss of stability through the removal of the belly mounted cooler was among the reasons that caused the accident. P-40 warhawk has a wing break speed of 661mph, but the controls lock up at 450mph roughly, and no you can't reach it is n level flight as the P-40s top level flight speed, using WEP was 360mph at 1 mile high, I realize that the plane he uses is a P-51, but there was a P-40 on the thumbnail, this is a call for them to fix the thumbnail

I also got to see "Voodoo" fly. Voodoo is actually the name of an air racing team, when he started for the team, their plane had it's share of problems, but with time he sorted out kinks and brought the team to glory. It was really fun to hear some of his story. I never knew of his relation to the museum's owners though, I thought he was an 'Honored Guest' when i first saw him speak.
I loved this video, I learned even more about him, and the production quality was gr8 8/8.

My uncle joined the army in 1938 at 16 years old. Before Pearl Harbor he was in Burma flying with the Flying Tigers, a captain at 19 years old.
My godfather Charles Sawyer, was with the Adam & Eves squadron. He told some incredible stories about the AVG.

A great vid, wish he could have made the record, and he will in the future. I have seen both Hintons win races, and sadly saw Steve Sr go down in the Red Baron. In my 50 plus years as a pilot I know one thing for sure, the Hinton men are a pair of the most talented aviators in the world
Whyy is it, the P51 Mustang remains to this day one of the best looking WWII aircraft. Othar craft from that era have their own appeal, but the P51, IMO, stands apart. Beautiful vintage airplane.
I prefer the bf-109 series a shame no one's going to fly that old bird in a tournament. Especially considering what it represented as the best of German aeronautical engineering at its time.
Michael Mao I much prefer the lines and looks of the BF-109. I think it looked far better than any P-51 and especially starting with the F variant started looking even better.
The Hintons are a family of real heroes. They take humanity to new levels of achievement.

Sadly his name will be largley unremembered outside of a small community because no one gives a shit about planes anymore. In the days of Curtis and Hughes, flight was magical, a marvel that represented a new age of man. Now, people sit in lounge chairs with big screen tv's at 45,000 feet doing 600MPH and get pissed off when their drinks take too long to come. No one gives a shit anymore, sadly. To me though, nothing sounds cooler than that Merlin whailing at full throttle. I kind of wonder where this family got their time/money to pursue this for generations though... Seems expensive. I like that B-25 in their hanger though. My grandpa was a B-25 pilot in WW2, his group was the 81st Earthquakers, stationed in Burma. He had some scary moments but the plane always got him back.

@Agent J I did. They were in a position to buy aircraft for less than a shitty pickup truck costs today. Now, they are worth multiple millions. Imagine, when values started to rise, they sold extras to other collectors- they also have an amazing facility where they have been doing exceptional aviation work for 4o+ years. They started simple, with junk hulks stored in friends back yards. All shoestring budget. No self entitles bullshit. Just hard work and tenacity, like I said earlier.

I saw Steve Jr. race this very Mustang at Reno in 2017. It was gorgeous, the sound still thunders in my memory. Voodoo was the class of the field. I've never seen anyone fly as low to the ground as Steve did that week, a perfect line. Voodoo did not win the final gold race as the engine began to let go as it entered the final lap. Still, Steve nearly pulled it off The race was epic.
I strongly suggest trying to get emotionally close to your dad. I had the same basic businesslike relationship with my dad. Now its too late for me to have more.

I love this story, and the way you put this video together. I also loved seeing the Navion sitting on the tarmac at the air strip at 6:12. I grew up in my dads Navion, and love those old planes. That was a Mustang wanna-be, designed by the same company that originally designed the P-51, North American. The design was sold to the Ryan Aircraft company which put it into production.

@@maxwellharris507 yeah but 4000bhp coming from 27L V12, that's 148bhp/l is pretty low by modern racing standard, and it's very unreliable. Even back in the 70's we got formula-1 engine churning out 1000bhp from of a little 1.5L engine. 3

@Maxwell Harris it's a piston engine so not much difference than car engine, except than the fuel used, and the RPM redline. Stock aviation piston engines usual redline at only 2500 rpm to make the engine understress because it had to cruise at almost full throttle much of the time. For this race RPM limit is not an issue as the plane just need to do several passes at full speed. This test is done at very low altitude anyway so a car engine could be used with few modifications.
The record is for a piston driven aircraft with relatively straight wings.

Great cinematography and sound. Aircraft are a passion for me. I look at Steve Hinton Jr as a adult and see the little boy that appeared in the Mel Gibson movie Forever Young from several years ago.
A German Pilot who flying combat jets etc. tells me only good ones can really handle a ww2 airplane.
100% right. Modern jets are much easier and safer to fly, specially on emergencies.. I flew DC-3's and other WW2 airplanes as cargo pilot in the 1980's. When i went to fly jets i could not believe how easy to fly they were.. Incredible difference..
Patently untrue. Think about who were flying these airplanes in war time. 19 and 20 year old kids with all of about 250 hours under their belt before shipping off to England to serve in combat units. The P-51 has a lot of go juice, but it's not terrifically hard to fly. The people that made the P-51 out to be this horrible airplane to fly are the people who can afford them (doctors, lawyers, the uber wealthy) who usually aren't pilots primarily. If you can handle basic stick and rudder skills you most likely have no issues flying a P-51.

He was born with a pretty big silver spoon and the fact he has a multi-million dollar Mustang to conduct this story shows that. Plus his entire family is already well experienced in aviation. This is no cinderella story. This is a boy who was born lucky and wealthy enough to even attempt such records with a family heritage doing so. Congrats on achieving something very difficult to obtain. But you definitely did not start from the dirt to reach such heights.

I wonder if they could get any faster if they used a cooling system similar to what was used in the He-100. But that might also need a completely redesigned aircraft.
That’s a cool idea that I could see helping. But I don’t think heat is the only problem when flying that fast.
@@HUEEY It's not about heating, it's about aerodynamics. The cooling system used in the He-100 didn't need radiators. The removal of holes and protuberances from the aircrafts fuselage made it way more efficient.
If I recall correctly, the He-100 broke several speed records thanks to that.
Around 570 mp/h is the barrier you don't wanna cross with this planes. Plus the engines are maxed out, the amount of hp the race built RR Merlin can put out is at 3600-3800 hp. That hasn't changed since the early 80's. The pinnacle are the aerodynamics. Plus the boil off cooling system you mean was used in the P51 Galloping Ghost and some Seafuries. Search "Galloping Ghost" and "September Fury" here on RUclips...
@Aleluia that’s what I’m saying there are many factors at play here. But I do agree that the he100s cooling system will make the aircraft way more aerodynamic. The only problem I see is that the he100 hand a way less powerful engine which did not produce nearly as much heat as a “overclocked” v12 Merlin.
@@HUEEY There is the only Mustang ever converted to a boil off cooling system similarto the He 100. And yes, it's the one that spectacularly crashed at the 2011 Reno Air Races. The conversion and the loss of stability through the removal of the belly mounted cooler was among the reasons that caused the accident. Top Speed was around 500 mph...

Steve Hinton is the greatest aviator in the modern world, in my humble opinion. No doubt his son will break the record at some point. Never give up!
P-40 warhawk has a wing break speed of 661mph, but the controls lock up at 450mph roughly, and no you can't reach it is n level flight as the P-40s top level flight speed, using WEP was 360mph at 1 mile high, I realize that the plane he uses is a P-51, but there was a P-40 on the thumbnail, this is a call for them to fix the thumbnail
