For the comments section: Inconel alloy work hardens, to machine it you must go slow with high feed rate to keep in under the surface work hardening. Inconel alloy is used for its strength in high temperature environments like rocket engines.
Good Heavens that Craven must have a 20 foot + length of cut. Not something you see very often these days. A thought, if you are running into problems with the lack of available feed speeds it may be worth motorising the carriage? You then could optimise the tool loading for every cutter diameter and material. It wouldn't need to big a motor and use a reduction box to drive the carriage drive gear. It would also free up a bit of spindle hp if it needed it. You would only need a drive for the feed motor and a couple of encoders if you wanted to absolutely fix the feed ratio to the spindle. I would assume that that isn't necessary at such low speeds. Just a thought Cheers
When you change the cartridge do you restart the tool from the beginning of the job or from were the cartridge failed??, you mentioned 3 degrees needed maching on the tool at the front or on the waste channel of the tool??,
I'm looking to build a trepan tool like this but am having trouble finding the cartridges. Do you know where I should look to find the insert cartridges?
Used your WD40 tip there when turning a few small parts. Shallow cuts with HSS. Kept the cut nice and wet with a super finish. Better than the cutting oil.
Would helical discharge channels on the trepanning tool bring any benefit? I know it would make the tool fab a bit of a headache, but I wonder if better chip evacuation would help anything. Love the video and the commentary! Cheers.
Thank you very much for sharing these amazing videos. I have not seen many trepanning videos. Can you share information about what these inconel rings are used for? Greetings from Germany.
I was wondering the very same thing during the video, so it will be interesting to hear David's answer. I certainly think that the lathes would have enough torque to power the four cutting tools, but there must be a good reason why we haven't seen a four cutter trepanning tool.
@@markfryer9880 I think it's a case of setting the cartridge depths. With two cartridges, you're guaranteed to have one further out than the other, both taking a chip. Now imagine setting 4 to take an equal cut.
