My ex use to use that station often (she lived less than 5 mins away), the bus journey there is over twice as long. No one in that community will take the train when your walk to the station is longer than the ride to Leeds. I don't understand why they can't keep it with as local stop with expresses using White Rose, it would just make more sense.
yup.
Expresses won't call at any of them, either station would never be more than locals. Stopping expresses at White Rose would be like stopping Weymouth fasts at Berrylands, or all West Coast expresses at Queens Park.
This station is not closing as of yet as they have run out of money. And the white rose is not finished and no one know when it will be finished
Closing a station is okay if there's an alternative. All hail White Rose
There building a station up the road to replace cottingley
@@minidarkvolten9167Sadly they're not at the moment....
Not so great if you bought one of those new houses at Cottingley at an inflated cost due it having a station right on the doorstep, and then had the rug pulled by Leeds City Council. The money they're spending on White Rose was compensation for the axed trolleybus scheme.
also when there are 2 passangers/year like teesside airport
It still seems weird for me to see TPE serving these stations. I was a student at Huddersfield Uni from 2006-2010. The local Hudd-Man Vic & Hudd-Leeds services were all Northern with all variants of 14x and 15x units used. One journey I remember well was a Leeds-Hudd stopper, full and standing on a single 153. At every station (including Cottingley) my friend and I had to shuffle into the back cab while the guard worked the doors. Now you get 3 & 6 car 185s.
Leeds - Huddersfield stoppers transferring back to Northern in December 2024
@@chriscotterill1989 When they're not on strike, or replaced by busses due to engineering works....
My local station, but a bit of an odd one really. Its so close to Leeds city centre that the majority of locals choose to rely on the bus network to get into town, since its cheaper. Its only really used as a park and ride for commuters who live in the surrounding conurbation between South Leeds, Kirklees and South Bradford. The only time I did catch a train to Cottingley was when its closure was announced, had to tick it off before it closes.
I did wonder about this, as the pedestrian connection between Cottingley & White Rose is clearly so poor, but if the Bus into Leeds City Centre is already the better option anyway, then improving the Park & Ride with a more accessible alternative for the region as a whole has to be step up.
@@stephenreardon2698 There will be pedestrian access from Elland Road.
So the long slog to the ring-road and back will no longer be needed....
Used this station a number of times. It serves a purpose (one thing I don't think you captured around 3:40 when talking about the residential aspect is on the 'other' side of the station to the new-build estate is a council estate with two tower blocks), but it's not fit for that purpose now because it's inaccessible. I don't think there is a lot of room for them to upgrade it to make it accessible, and given that the business park White Rose is adjacent to is footing some/all of the bill for the new station, it makes sense for it to move. Irony is it becomes even less accessible for residents, though!
Cottingley is fine! I use it regularly and I’ve got no issues with it whatsoever. It’s very convenient for me. The new White Rose station will be a few minutes longer walk away which isn’t too bad, but many people that live in Cottingley won’t be walking to the new station. They’ll just use the bus.
I think maybe you should have gone at it from the White Rose Shopping Centre side? The retail park side does have a sixth form college within one of the units which perhaps support the relocation of the station. Cottingley’s location is a bit strange, on one side it does feel a little remote from those two tower block and yet on the other side there is a whole relatively new housing estate, which makes the relocation a little strange. I doubt people are really wanting to travel to the White Rose Shopping Centre when there is Trinity and the Victoria Quarter/John Lewis in Leeds city centre.
Cottingley is the nearest station to where I live, but still not "Walking Distance".
It's a good job you didn't exit the station from the other side, as it is not the best part of Leeds, but you could have got on the hourly 47 bus to the White Rose Centre.
6:36 - Battling your way through brambles and branches - Geowizard would be proud!
Fair play to your fellow passengers for getting into the spirit (or Prosecco) of things behind you.
Somehow didn't notice that while editing!
Industrial estates, thick undergrowth and construction site. My word Nick you know how to treat a girl 😉
At least it’s a clean leading up the bushes kind of thing 😅
Great video, Nick!
I think that was the same day when I was visiting multiple stations around the Leeds area, and I went up this way on 158755 passing through!
A few years ago Northern used to run the local stoppers between Leeds and Huddersfield and Huddersfield and Manchester Piccadilly, but then TPE took them on, hence why the station probably is managed by Northern but TPE mainly calls there, not been transferred over?
Leeds - Huddersfield stoppers transferring back to Northern in December 2024
Huddersfield and Manchester Vic.
Why not keep both? I live in a town near Warrington and we have a station serving housing estates and one serving the town
Too close together for trains to stop at both (not my words, but the words of the WYCA)
@@n0rthernbusesinteresting. Northern claim that too with Warrington west and sankey yet can stop at both twice a day
WR & CLY are a not that close
@@LuperSoop69 800 metres is apparently too close according to WYCA
@@n0rthernbuses it looks more than 800 metres tho, the line does do a zig zag ish bend round between the two
Thanks for a trek into the unknown, a station closing that is so close to the village though is a shame.
I hope they create a direct, lit and paved footpath wirh a safe crossing of Elland Road for the people who currently use Cottingley station to get to the new one or they'll lose a lot of passengers. 20 min is quite a walk to add to a commute.
Made the trip to Cottingley myself in February... it was pouring with rain... think I was the only one there getting on it and no one got off 😅
I think that the new Cottingley railway station will look much better than the old Cottingley station. But yes sad to see the old station go once the new station is built and fully operational.
Poor cottingley 😔
We have seen another station fall R.I.P Cottingley
It's also the closest station to Elland Road football ground, although how many Leeds fans use it when travelling to home matchdays is beyond me
Brilliant video as usual! I must visit Cotringley before it closes, but it’s good they’re opening a new station not too far up the road!
Nick your videos are a real joy to watch. Such a positive and relaxed energy - keep it up! It’s been wonderful to watch the channel grow!!
Can’t wait for White Rose’s Opening- it’s going to be amazing! 🤩🌹
Great video as usual Nick. It's always a shame when a station closed. I don't know if this has been suggested already, but you could do a Point To Point between Meols and Meols Cop
I'll tell you exactly why that station closed. Modern suburbia is the land of the car. If they built that place properly, with mixed used business and residential, so you didn't need a car, that station would see a lot more passenger use.
The Saltburn service only stopped there when the upgrade work was going on . Mainly Hull services now.
NO NEED TO CLOSE COTTINGLEY
White Rose is designed purely for the Shopping Centre....
Cottingley serves a local area and housing.....
This is a daft attempt to speed trains up on this line....but this will be negated by stopping at White Rose which is on the two track railway anyway.
White Rose Station could have been built far more cheaply and been a more practical proposition if they had just put in one platform (worked multi-directionally), as a loop to the existing two tracks.

Great video Nick. Did go to Cottingley a few months ago. Only seen White Rose from passing on the train
Stations on Curves also have sightline problems
I think what you missed is the White Rose (Business) Park is a fairly large Office park - I worked there a few years back (it was called soemthing else then) but there is a major Capita site, HMRC, HSBC and Barclays at the other side of the Road
I would estimate over 5,000 people work there and (apart from a 20 min walk to Cottingley) they are dependent on driving or some businesses have shuttle buses to Leeds Station
So add these to shoppers for the next door shopping centre - which has added a cinema etc and it makes perfect sense to move the station (too close to have both open)
Ah good ol' Cottingley station... Always passed through the station towards and away from Leeds on the TP line but never acutally set foot on the station. It's a shame that it is closing but having the station closer to The White Rose Shopping Centre would help White Rose a lot though. White Rose really needs a speedier connection to Leeds and neighbouring areas and not constantly relying on the bus network.
" I bought a station, not half an hour ago, from this very boutique."
"Oh yes, White Rose station. Beautiful, platform, Major. What's wrong with it?"
"I'll tell you what's wrong with it, my lad, it's dead."
"Nah, nah. It's just sleeping."
Etc, etc,
Dead parrot sketch again. Just like HS2.
Brilliant video Nick, looking at the facilities Cottingley station has to offer, I can see why it's being replaced especially if the new White Rose station is serving the retail park of the same name.
Showing a notification of Closure at a station sometimes actually keeps it open if enough people campaign as on the Edinburgh to Glasgow via Shotts line a Station called Breich was up for closure that was saved before it's planned Closure
3:00 What exactly is a "Promise to Pay", I've never heard that term before
Crazy stuff. No station should be being closed, it costs little to nothing to keep a small station like Cottingley open, and look how many residential buildings it's near? thats crazy. and its topped off by the fact the white rose station is both really far from the actually shopping park AS WELL as being so delayed. this was really poor planning tbh.
Another station i think is located far away from the center is Sandown on the Isle of Wight.
I think try could keep cottingley and new station white rose both stations will have advantages and disadvantages especially the elderly who can't walk 20-30mins
Brilliant video:-)
Hey Nick!
Have you seen on the news, that Northern are playing Classical music at some stations, to combat antisocial behaviour?
I think this is a great idea!
What are your thoughts?
Perhaps you could do a video on visiting one or two? 😊
Love the video as always! 😊
Sounds nice. Not sure if that will work though. They'll probably vandalise the speaker.
nick are you going to ignore the fact just before you got off ladies were pouring alcahol!
Hi. Rather than Cottingley closing because it wasn't well located, it was more that the owners of the office park decided to fund a new station nearer to their front door, for their own benefit, and it was then decided that Cottingley and White Rose were too close together for both to be viable. The estate you walked through, full of new houses, was built around 15-20 years after the station and no doubt easy access to the railway would have drawn many people to the new-build houses. Just a few years on and they're losing their local station because of corporate selfishness. Additionally, the new station being less than 10 minutes from the city centre by rail, and as the enormous free car parking of the shopping centre is just a few yards away, that car park will likely become a de-facto park and ride into Leeds, putting more pressure on the already horrendously busy and inadequate roundabout at the entrance to the White Rose Centre. Of course, there were grand plans to improve the junction and surrounding roads when the new station was first mooted, but things have gone very quiet. I'm expecting either a complete white elephant station, never used, or apocalyptic 'park-and-ride' traffic chaos. Oh and if it IS busy, you can bank on Northern and TPE not to react with sufficiently-sized trains... Enjoyed the video by the way, always like seeing my local area "on film"
I have to say if I were a resident by a station and was told it was closing and the replacement was a 20 minute walk away I'd be very, very angry. Why can't they have both stations?
166 passengers a day (presumably 83 returns) on average and the fact that White Rose and the new Morley station are better aligned for the TRU/electrification project.
My nearest station is 45 mins away and I’m not complaining
You wouldn't have to walk, cottingley has a bus to white rose
@@Sozbear Morley station is even further from Morley than previously.
Atleast its not a historic station
Couldn’t they just keep Cottingley and it is helping White Rose
now they are looking into where the money as gone. It still not open and it my never open. All they had to do is what they have done at Morley and Castleford Station. The Length of the platform done few year back at cottingley to take 6 cars train
A 20 minute walk to a station. No thanks. An unexpected increase in costs. When has a rail project ever come in on time and on budget?
You need to go gillingham (kent) to gillingham (dorset) 👍🏼
Imagine a station being renamed from cherry tree to red rose in Lancashire
I live in Cottingley :)
It takes about 20mins (or less) to walk between a lot of the London Tube stations , which seems like a possible reason for retaining Cottingly ( seems like levelling down rather than up) . Actually Idea for Vid no one else has done on London Underground - what is the walking time between closed (but extant) tube stations (Zone 1 , Zone 2 Zone 3 (eg Bull and Bush, Lords, Down Street, York Road) to the next open stations (in each direction). I would like Pentonville Road exit from Thameslink I miss too as the walk back from SPancras is a pain.
If I Heard That My Local Station Grove Park Was Closing, I Would Be So Pissed Off I Wouldn't Even Be Angry, I'd Be Fuming.
This was a great video and will you be visiting White Rose when it eventually opens & loved Natts T Shirt
TPE call there on the Leeds Huddersfield stopping service and the Hull to Piccadilly service. The Saltburn MIA service do not call there.
From what i have heard on the grapevine is that both stations will stay open as local residents have complained but thats not confirmed.
There is no space in the timetable for BOTH stations.
@@stephenclark9917 like I say, just what I heard.
Famous for the photos of the Cottingley Faries which Arthur Conan Doyle,a keen Spiritualist, was fooled by.
A different Cottingley, one near Bradford.
This was a good video Nick!
When I went to the white rose centre it was go to Leeds Station and get the First LeedsCity 3/3A or the Arriva 200/201/202/203
I hope people don't have to walk down that overgrown path to get to the new White Rose station
"Well, that's a good sign" Really, Nick?
In another 36 years, they will replace White Rose with Cottingley lol, it might.
All that will happen is the people who live near Cottingley Station and use it will find alternative public transport options.
Only in Britain could they build a new station in a jungle
almost like Gent-Sint-pieters, under renovations since 2008 first expected to end in 2010 than pushed to 2014-15 and now end 2024 early 2025, unforeseen increase in costs -_-
Not holding my breath with the new station progress to be frankly honest. Apparently it’s lost practically all funding and progress has just stalled. Not actually sure if this is true but it wouldn’t be a massive shock if it was true.
Point to point Reston to Preston
I wonder if the great and the good of RUclips ,train railway people , will converge on it when it closes like they do when a new one opens .
Bordesley (Birmingham) is also doomed (I believe).
I don't believe it's had a formal notice of closure issued, but it's definitely heavily in talks!
Great video Nick and Nat despite the sad circumstances of a station closing
NOOOOOOOOO
0:04 What I see your effort to get there residents all ready switched or there's replacement bus 47 and 55 C Bus to Leeds City center ?
footbridge to Pilning maybe?
Shhh that's too sensible! I mean, it could have had Angel Road's but didn't
It’s only been open for 36 years.
Couldn’t they or might they call it White Rose for Cottingley ?
I'd be miffed if I got off at a station to face a 20 minute walk to the actual location.
Is White Rose actually having a completition date set now ?
Nick have you been to Sunderland new trian station yet.
I Have A Point To Point Suggestion: Mottingham To Nottingham
He's already done that one
my local train station i dont want it to go to be honest
1:30 a 3-car 158??
Yeah, on that line they run 3 car 158s pretty frequently.
Yeah Northern has a few of them. I don't think many were built
So it will be nice and convenient for retail, but rather more awkward for the housing development……

Oh no! I live nowhere near cottingley but it’s always sad to see a station close.
I hear the replacement is delayed?
As the vegetation along the trail became increasingly overgrown, I was expecting the story to switch to a hunt for an old Roman road.
If this was Easter Weekend I hope you went up to Middleton Railway for steam etc fun
