joanna's music is like a personification of a hug. sometimes the hugs are suffocating and sometimes they are gentle but either way they make me feel safe
I had my baby Esme Willow exactly 8 months ago today and would listen to this song a lot whilst waiting for her. She seems to recognise it when I play it to her now. It’s a beautiful song with such memories for me 💚
I had my first baby, a girl, Esmé Rose, almost a year ago. This is my first time hearing this song and I'm crying as I listen to it and watch her play.
We named our daughter Esme after knowing and loving this song. But I only ever listened more closely to the lyrics after she was already born, and it made even more sense why we chose the name.
It's remarkable to listen to her transition from Milk Eyed Mender, a wonderful album full of great little idiosyncratic pop songs, to her more recent output, which seems to be not only concerned with transcendence via musical performance, but in the business of actually accomplishing that lofty aesthetic goal - what a damn fine body of work
This song will play at my funeral. I love it so much, it is so beautiful and I want the emotion I feel when I hear it to be heard and felt after I pass.
intelligently written, as always with ms newsom. her voice & accompaniment carry you along very dreamily. very nice cd & we find out... joanna has legs!
Enlightened is truly an amazing show. A phenomenal cast, and the series is a bit of humor, poignancy, spirituality, vulnerability, all melded together.
i was so pleasantly surprised when this came on at the end of Enlightened. i thought they only used original music, but this song fit really well with the episode. i hope this turns at least one person on to her music. this song is one of my favorites.
Picture this: you are hiking all by yourself, in the middle of nowhere. You see this cave, and out of curiosity, you go inside to explore. And, inside this cave, is a fairy. A fairy singing this and playing on a harp, and around her are light blue glowing mushrooms. That is what comes into my mind when I hear this song.
Feeel the mother only being able to sing a song for that baby Breaks my heart You know what They have a whole life ahead to be happy and be happy together
Can someone explain this song to me? I have trouble understanding some parts because English isn't my first language. From what I gather, it's a song she wrote for a baby, maybe her friend's. The song is meant for the girl when she grows up and tells her how much love she has brought to the family and to remind her that she will always be loved. But what do these sections mean? "The phantom of love moves among us at will Each phantom-limb lost has got an angel So confused like the wagging bobbed-tail of a bulldog" So she is comparing love to a phantom-limb? They've lost love but they feel they still have it? "But there, in the looking-glass, a kite is soaring Stilling my warring heart and my trembling knees" I don't get this part at all. Beautiful song :)
the second part to me means that the happiness that the baby brought soothes her heart while she's going through hard times. and the first part means the love they have for the baby is helping them through emotionally trying situations...at least that's how i see it
Marlie Eamigh Thank you, your interpretation makes sense. What could the mirror be? Maybe her reflecting on her own life and being made happy by the baby despite all the other things in the mirror that make her knees tremble and her heart uneasy?
I find the interpretation about the loss of a baby as being her personal experience completely lacking in evidence despite the interview paraphrase. Her songs can still be personal without them being about her experience. She's written about historical events and figures that could reflect something about her but are obviously not based on her own life (e.g. You and Me, Bess; Have One on Me; Kingfisher). Even though I strongly disagree with you on this particular opinion, of course I cannot agree more on your praise for her music. She is indeed a world-builder.
Tommy O. I have a feeling that Joanna had a miscarriage or an abortion since she has so many songs about the loss of a child that wasn't even born yet. Esme, Baby Birch, etc.
The phantom of love moves among us at will is a Christian reference to the holy spirit which is made up of our unity and love, we collectively are the holy spirit or the phantom of love. Each phantom-limb lost has got an angel means that those that pass are disconnected from us but no less absent.
@sirormadame You have no idea that is my absolute favorite part of the song. When i'm listening to it and it gets to that part i have to rewind it back again. sometimes i rewind it twice. just to make sure i heard it correctly... did heaven just zap into my in my ipod? *rewind* yup.
This song is about loss, not a friend’s baby. The lyrics describe the hope and dreams of expecting a child and having only a short time spent with her before she passes on. The looking glass is the imaginary other world where her mother imagines her playing and happy. My daughter is called Esmé - not because of this song but I was led to this song because of her. I think she has painted a beautiful positive release in loss. X
this whole album is easily one of the best of all time
Ys is her magnum opus, but this is a close second

This song is so beautiful and kind and tender I can't help but tear up every time I hear it

Beautiful share!! Reading this brought tears to my eyes. I guess I'm a bit soft. 😊
My daughter is Esme as well- and I didn’t hear it until after she was born either and oh man did I cry and cry.
We named our daughter Esme after knowing and loving this song. But I only ever listened more closely to the lyrics after she was already born, and it made even more sense why we chose the name.
Nobody cares
@salamanderwenis8068 I hope that, whatever happened in your life to make you such a jerk, you heal from it and one day become a better human.
Kindness, kindness prevails.
I love this song. reminded me of a slow rural dusk.

This song is from my favourite scene in Enlightened on HBO. If you haven’t watched that series, it’s basically this song in television show form.
Enlightened is truly an amazing show. A phenomenal cast, and the series is a bit of humor, poignancy, spirituality, vulnerability, all melded together.
