The chords in the background obviously dictate the tonality, so they are equally important when commanding different modal sounds. All this info is in expanded on in detail in Guitar Super System (bit.ly/G1SS50) and you can also look through the Music Theory playlist on my channel for more videos on major scale modes, plus tons of other tips and lessons.
This is fantastic. Lydian and Dorian are always my favorite go to. Over at my channel I have a video called "Guess that mode". It's a game to test your ear. You should make a game with this. It would be great to practice "hearing" the modes and see how well you know each mode.
Maybe i'm weird, but I enjoyed Locrian the most followed by Dorian. The fact that Locrian doesn't have a really strong resolution just makes it super cool that you were able to work around that well. Nice work.
You damn snowflake! If you don't like the dorian and lydian mode then just leave the guitar and buy a freaking drum! Several musicians fought for our rights to play the major and the pentatonic scales, don't disrespect them! XD
This should have so many more views... Not just because it's a great demonstration of what the modes sound like, but it's SO GROOVY and SO TASTY :) Amazing job Tyler.
Had to sift through pages of instructional videos explaining what modes were before I was finally able to find one that just demonstrated them all in a given scale 😓 thank you for being the only one to post this Tyler ❤️
Guitar student of 6 months here (I still suck but I'm working on it); this video helped out so much with my understanding of modes. I can look at diagrams all day, but getting the feel of them has been impossible 'til now, and hearing them back to back like this really cleared things up. I have a feeling I'll come back to this one. Thanks!
I am doing some research for my students making sure that my knowledge of the modes can be understood by them. This video is very well connected to feelings...which I am assuming my students have...I will show them this video for sure! Great Job! 3 years later...
Holy shit man, just when i needed it. I literally just started understanding the modes better and then boom, you come out with this video. The power of the universe.
It's not the same backing track, he's playing different chords for each mode, they are just all in the same key center, G. Ionan, aka the Major scale: Gmaj7 - Cmaj7 Dorian: Gm7 - Cdom7 Phrygian: Gm7 - Abmaj7 Lydian: G - A Mixolydian: G - F - C - G Aeolian, aka the Minor scale: Gm - F - Eb - F Locrian: Gm7b5 - Gm7b9b5, he's not playing the 3rd in the latter chord, but it's implied by the backing track and his soloing
Not only is his phrasing super similar, his guitar tone is Joe`s tone too.Not sure Tyler will ever find his own voice but just always sound like a mini-me of Joe S.
Because Satriani often does the same thing in his songs as Tyler does here: switching between different modes with same tonal center. Playing in D lydian then D phrygian or D minor. Things like that
Hey! Do a video on the Spanish Mixolydian scale! Also known as the Klezmer scale or Gypsy scale. Start on the fifth scale degree of a harmonic minor scale. Sounds so dope!
Double harmonic minor(gypsy scale, minor with a raised 7th and raised 4th), Phrygian dominant(raised 3rd, has that iconic Spanish/middle eastern jump), and you can also raise the 7th on the Phrygian dominant to make it extra wide(Byzantine scale)
Lydian and Mixolydian for me and they even sounded great transitioning into each other, dreamy and groovy is my style guess that's why I love Siamese Dream.
I noticed the chords in the background added a lot to the feel also. What progression did you use? I'm sure you changed it to fit the mode of course but was there a certain progression you used?
Ionan, aka the Major scale: Gmaj7 - Cmaj7 Dorian: Gm7 - Cdom7 Phrygian: Gm7 - Abmaj7 Lydian: G - A Mixolydian: G - F - C - G Aeolian, aka the Minor scale: Gm - F - Eb - F Locrian: Gm7b5 - Gm7b9b5, he's not playing the 3rd in the latter chord, but it's implied by the backing track and his soloing The 7th chord extensions he used here and there are not important, but the difference between Major and Minor chords is really important, and what's bringing out the essence of each mode.
How do you know if a certain chord progression will allow for tonality of different modes? Will any song in a major key be able to play the 1st 4th 5th and vice versa?
Tylers Ive been following you for over an year and I love all your vids.. I just wanted to ask If you can make some videos on improvising I always get stuck playing the scale up n down ... maybe u can teach some of your licks.. I will really appreciate it. keep shredding \M/
Tyler I just wanna ask.... how on earth did you manage to learn to play all of these modes? I may be able to memorise the major scale across the fingerboard, but I feel like I'll never be able to seamlessly know where the root notes/perfect fifths/other important notes are if I change modes, is it just experience? I feel like I'm getting nowhere with my practise of modes.... hope you see this!
Tyler, I love your videos man and I am very interested in your GUITAR SUPER SYSTEM. I only have an iPod to work with so my question is will still have access to all your content with just an iPod? Thanks in advance 😬
So is the mode and the "sound" decided by the note you play the most? Ex: a is the sixth of c major so that would make it aeolian as long as I play c major built around the sixth
were you playing 5 chords or power chords in that backing track???? , Im thinkin probably so to be able to play to major and minor modes and have them sound good over the same progression. Just wondering? Thanks for all the good vids I still haven't checked out all your courses yet but did purchase them all when you did your ten dollar deal couldn't pass that up so I purchased all 5 :). I'm currently doing a couple other courses from some other peeps I purchased prior to yours, but I did check out your exotic scales and was really liking it, need to also get back to it. Thank you Music is Win! :)
Are you using the same root note for every mode, or are you going through the same scale, and changing the root note based on the degree?
+Ambassador of Kekistan I think think that he is keeping the same root note.. may be wrong
Nice video Tyler especially the exotic phrygian mode with its mysterious flatted note..
Phrygian is not evil - just misunderstood lol
Phrygian Dominant is the evil one
slayer uses it also kindoff allot.
phrygian dominant is exotic
@@AlgyCuber then marty friedman uses it allot. slayer uses locrian allot, or they are off just by allot of times.
well, it also depends on the context of how we use each scale
only brave men use the locrian mode

The two note pattern you can play anywhere on the neck 🤣
Ugggh that mixolydian is so dirty, it's the most psychedelic-y sounding mode to me.
It's a favored mode of many Jam Bands, ranging from the Allmans (Ramblin Man) to the Dead (China Cat) to Phish (Divided Sky).
eeeh what? can't relate. the locrian sounds like weird stuff. Mixolydian sounds awesome
I like mixing mixolydian and dorian (only difference is minor and major 3rd)
+allscar osclex Dirty in a good way, like a dirty lick/riff, you've never heard that expression?
yes ofcourse! just not in the negative way x) I mean if you like jimmie hendrix you gotta love the mixo

But no one asks “How is Locrian?”
Those transitions make me feel as if I'm watching a power point presentation.
Ionian=Delight
Dorian=Death
Phrygian=Despair
Lydian=Dream

Aeolian=Desire
Locrian=Destruction
