This showed up on my feed today. It is St. Neri’s feast day. His story is so relevant to this clip… After a mystical experience, he enrolled in philosophy and theology classes at a local monastery in order to become a priest. Although he excelled in his studies, he suddenly quit in order to spiritually serve the people of Rome. At that time, indifference, luxury, and corruption were widespread characteristics of the Roman clergy. Churches were neglected, flocks were abandoned, and the loss of faith was widespread. St. Philip Neri, with his commitment to a life of asceticism, was a contradiction to all of this malaise. With his characteristic good-naturedness, he lead many to a life of virtue and love for God as he traveled through the streets of Rome. He later became a priest.
I get the whole “Judas was one of the twelve” argument. But it feels as though we are at a point where it isn’t just one of twelve. I don’t know the proportion of it, but the number of problematic Bishops is somewhat concerning.
That’s exactly what I was going to say.. I can’t judge hearts, but what about the fruits of those bishops. When my daughter thought Fr. Martin and his flag leading people into the abyss, he was a great priest, I had to intervene; our relationship was hurt greatly she is back to the sacraments, but has all this confusion. Not everyone has a parent who explains. My own parents, from the 60’s are lost, but they think they are Catholic. We need saint bishops now! Bishops that correct other bishops like Saint Paul corrected Saint Peter!
But ultimately we can blame the hierarchy all the way to hell. If one part of the body is not doing its job, then God will give those gifts to another part-that would be us. And yes, not everyone has parents that explain but you work in your sphere of influence the Truth and holiness will set people free it will catch fire person to person and so they will eventually, if we focus on our own holiness (and speak out absolutely) those others who have no one to explain will bump into that Fire of the Spirit. But if we exhaust ourselves complaining that they are not doing their job and then wait for them to do it…what’s the fruit? We know the Truth! We are the conduits! So I don’t want to wallow anymore in being ticked off. At some point it is now my responsibility and I need to take it up. Or souls will be lost that were given to me. There are holy priests in all of our circles. We know where to find them.
Could it be that it’s an innately priestly temperament to view this as a test of faith, rather than having a leadership mentality? A leader owns the problem and either fixes it, or cuts it out of the organization for the good of the organization (the church). Our church needs leadership. Bishops cannot simply be handwringing bystanders waiting for the Lord to sort it out at the Judgement.
@@duncescotus2342 His point is that there is a real blame that needs to be acknowledged that lays directly on the bad Bishops and the good Bishops who don't do anything. They have the authority to directly influence the holiness of the Church. It's not just about saying "there will always be bad people."
@@TheKevin9000 Thanks for that reply, brother. If what you're saying is the case, that there are good bishops and bad ones, and the fault can't be placed at some higher level, then the only recourse is to an ecumenical council. As an ardent Conciliarist, it is my hope that the Pope call a Vatican III (or have it elsewhere) and that it table clerical celibacy and that it be truly ecumenical with Orthodox and Protestant representation, in an observer-advisory status if not a voting status. The weight upon one man, even if he is as much of an Apostle as Peter is perhaps too much!
The point of the OP is when bishops become aware of abuses by the priests that they should act to have the civic authorities investigate and prosecute those on the merits of the evidence to protect the congregation from what could very well be criminal acts. The past method seemed to be to move the priest to a new parish or to silence the controversy out of fear of it hurting the church.
Great conversation thanks for asking to the tough and needed questions, Matt. The youth are particularly vulnerable and scandalized. But the Holy Spirit is not going to fail us. Personal holiness will dispel the darkness in our spheres of influence and scatter the confusion that abounds. Praise His Merciful and Knowing Heart!

@josie I was a little disappointed that he didn't respond to Matt's very direct and specific concern about the silence of Bishops on a very hot topic. He gave a very general and non specific response without directly addressing what Matt brought up, which is a dominant issue in the church and society. For me it was a bit too "politically savvy" to be general and non specific (avoid putting things on video that can be attacked) since that was the particular topic being discussed... Bishops who don't stand up and speak clearly for the faith. Maybe he is more direct in other parts of the interview?
@@duncescotus2342 I suppose it would depend on the intended meaning. I can't decide for myself, outside of Christ, what is holy, so in that sense it doesn't work because self definition quickly erodes to preferences vs. holiness. But I also can't believe I am holy because my overall community is holy so I am covered by nature of the groups collective holiness. So in that sense, I need to work on my own personal holiness.
@@wishIwuzskiing Very good answer, NQ! I think you nailed it. We can't get it ourselves, but once having it we need to work on it, ardently. If that's a paradox, so be it. The whole Christian faith is paradoxical.
What a powerful Bishop🙏 God bless his clarity and courage🙏 God is in charge and separating out the wheat from the chaff🙏 And the ones complaining need to make sure they have their souls in order to face God when he calls🙏 God has won so just stay true and keep fighting for the Truth🙏
To those who keep doubting the authenticity of the Catholic Church because of what this bishop did or what that pope did. PLEASE IT'S ENOUGH. You aren't in the Church because of this bishop or that priest, you're in the church because of Christ, because of the truth he has entrusted the Church with (1 Tim 3:15). I can understand the discouragement that can come from seeing the people we expect to be good examples do the wrong thing but that's not a reason to lose faith!!! Peter denied Jesus three times and yet he still remained the one to whom Jesus entrusted the keys to the kingdom of heaven. We have to understand that these people are human beings as well. Yes they undergo training and all that but that doesn't guarantee their perfection. Which brings me to my second point. These bishops and priest don't fall from heaven. They were once regular faithful like you and me! So the problem does not even stem from them but from us the lay faithful. Our world is taking a turn for the worse and if this is still the society we expect our ordained ministers to come from then we should expect worse. Parents need to bring up their kids in the right manner. Saint Therese of Lisieux's parents should be an example to all of us. The change needs to start from us the lay faithful and not the hierarchy. Finally, our rosaries are there for a reason, our chapters our there for a reason, our fasting and our sacrifices are there for a reason. Pray! Pray!! Pray!!! We often rely on the prayers of our priests and bishops so much so that we forgot they are human beings like us. Let's pray for the Church, let's fast for the Church. If we really want to see a change in the Church then we have to move past our complaining and whining and take action!!! I hope this post reaches somewhere Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us Our Lady, Mother of the Church, pray for us St. Joseph, Patron saint of the Church, pray for us All you heavenly angels and saints of God, pray for us. Amen.
Thank you. The Church has seen worse and came out better for it. We should be praying instead of complaining. The tides will turn in time as they always do and God's people will strive and flourish again. Times of great trouble make great saints. I spent a lot of time being angry and enough is enough, Christ saw the devil fall from heaven and ole blue beard is fighting a battle he cannot win. Time for the lay faithful to take responsibility for our role in the Church.
I think you might be wrong about SOME of these bad clerics-I think some of them did NOT start out faithful but, in fact, decided to enter the church to CHANGE it OR to lead a double life while under cover of being a pastor.
Love this! We are all going to stand before God for our own lives. Stop blaming and be the lightening! So powerful and inspiring! Don't think only priests and bishops work in the kingdom! All believers are to work in the kingdom!
Well said, this is truth 💯 We are to accept all things as from the Will of God. All this stuff going on in the Church is a suffering that we must go through, BUT THIS I S A CALL TO PERSONAL HOLINESS!
I firmly agree with this Bishop. We are all called to live know our faith, to live our faith and there’s nothing stopping us except us. I’m very fortunate to not be one of the bishops who refuse to protect, lead and feed their sheep. Whoa to them
Thank you for this as it just sheds light on this subject in a very reasonable, and practical way; relating it to our journey as Christians throughout time.
It gives me great assurance when I remember that there were heresies and conflicts even in the New Testament church, even at the time of the apostles. The enemy is working but the Holy Spirit is greater. Our job is to remain faithful and obedient to the gospel.
1/12 of the handpicked companions of Christ were traitors, 10/12 fled in terror and didn't come back to do the right thing until later, only 1/12 of the Apostles stayed with him until the end and stood at the foot of the Cross when He breathed His last this side of Salvation. Why should we expect anything different? There are approximately 5,600 living bishops today. We should then anticipate that 466.6 of them are Judas, 466.6 of them are John, and the remainder will either flee or deny Christ, before coming to their senses, repenting, and fighting the good fight after, as his Excellency so beautifully put it, "...a lifetime of suffering." God bless the Church, God bless His Bishops, each and EVERY one.
This certainly helps to explain all the horrible priests and bishops involved in the sexual abuse scandals over the years. Everyone I know knows at least one priest who was involved. It’s still shocking and painful but since all the guilty parties are human, I guess it shouldn’t be.
The wheat and tares growing together, that's the hardest part when it is our authority that show those same weaknesses. We have to remember they are humans too but it can be hard to remember they needed to be saved too. Thank you, Lord.
My last confession, I was admonished for believing there is error happening in the church. I was told that he is highly catechized, he studied for years, he study’s the Bible every day and that I am in a grave place to say there is error!!!!! God help me.
First, I’m glad that you were able to brave enough to speak of such things to some in your church. Second whoever is saying that your Bishop (I don’t know what position they are in, just guessing) is so “amazing and perfect” that you can’t find fault in the church then they are wrong to say so. A church should take complaints seriously and should never exempt anyone from investing no matter the status or appearance. Not really for sure what problem you have with your church or a specific problem but it needs to be addressed. I had a family member unfortunately had to complain about their pastor and no one believes him at first because everyone adore the pastor and thought he could do no wrong. Well they pushed for an investigation and my family member was right because what happened, actually happened to other members of church but kept quiet because they were scared. And the pastor was removed immediately. I will say one word of advice on how to approach this situation, I remember this a couple of weeks ago our church actually talked about this subject but I can remember where it is in the Bible. But first talk to person (if there is anyone specific) that you have a problem with, if not next you go the the leaders of your church and have a discussion over it, if that doesn’t work, then finally you need to public talk about this problem to whole church/congregation to figure out how to fix a problem. I’m so sorry that your in such a tough position and some people aren’t taking your seriously. I hope thing resolve well.
@@jonjonson7248 No there is serious error in the Church. If there wasn't Bergoglio would explain himself but he doesn't... Because he knows he is in the wrong. Humility means accepting reality for what it is.
I expect the "weeds". What I don't expect is for a particular priest or bishop to teach heresy for years on end and no bishop speaks out and there is no attempt to silence the heresy.
Agreed. Thank you for this session. No wonder why St Paul VI said if St Josemaría Escriva he was of the greatest saints of all of Church history. Indeed, st Josemaría makes everyday work a means for holiness - I.e, the opportunity for everyone to achieve fulfillment and holiness.
I wish more of our bishops in my country (Spain) were more like him. We need sheperds that actively take care of their sheep, that spread the Word and truly worry about those in spiritual need. As an example, the bishop of my diocese hasn't opened the confessionals yet, using the pandemic as an excuse (go figure). Bad sheperds do not care if their sheep roam freely and ended up being preyed by wolves. Pray for the strenghtening of their faith and the renewal of their vocation. We need them.
Humanity is still so weak even with all the warnings and blessings God has sent to us. We pray to the Holy Spirit to help us keep our eyes on Jesus. We do know right from wrong.
Mother Angelica sounded the alarm big time, back in the day…and Church Militant and Mike Vorris seem like the only ones with enough guts to call them all out one by one.
But isn't it strange that all the scandal, bad priests and bishops, in the Catholic Church has come to light in the last 50 years. It puts me in mind what Mae West said about bad women..."There are no good women gone bad just bad women found out." There are no good bishops/priests gone bad just bad priests and bishops found out. One of the good things that Vatican II did was to bring bad priests and bad bishop out into the light. They had been hidden all along but the Council made them feel safe enough to expose themselves.
This video is painfully relevant. Thank you; it conveys a hopeful, meaningful way to view what I often perceive as a house of horrors. There will be plenty of Judases, but focus on what you're able to perceive as God's will for your life's work, and choose communion with Our Lord. Love & pray, remain faithful & humble yourself to confess & struggle against your sins... & He Who is faithful will bring you to victory & use your willing sacrifices (Colo 1:24) to extend Life to others as well. Blessed be God in His angels and in His saints!
When a person is called to be a bishop and he thinks, he knows in his bone that he is not up to the task, it is not a discontinued the pope if he says no.. decline.. the thing is it’s the power and the prestige and the money… sad.
We must *not* attack Perdition at all; we have to avoid its presence no matter what; as any attack by us is complete and utter suicide on our parts- we are not designed for that kind of a job; we are designed to *resist* to simply stand-and-defend, not to attack at all.
I am a husband, father and grandfather and feel a lot of responsibility for the souls entrusted to me. How much more so must it be for our priests and bishops! We should really pray for them.
Yes, but the biggest difference is fraternity. Most NO priests have no fraternity because they run a parish on their own. Domestic fatherhood doesn’t necessitate fraternity the way clerical fatherhood does.
Thank God my faith does not rely on bad priests, bad bishops or bad pope's....we will have to ride out the storms as they come. I'm a cradle Catholic and ain't going nowhere because of the rotten apples... there's too many good fruits among them....we must keep the church in our prayers. The calm is in the eye of the storm
Contributing to the problem could be baptism without actual conversion; confirmation without conversion; catechesis without actual spiritual conversion; confession without true conversion.
I must just say Judas failed before the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, all the other Apostles died as Martyrs. I agree with the Bishop but it would be "feeding the flock" well if evil Bishops are excommunicated.
I use an analogy that the Church is like a ship. The Captains change periodically, the crew are replaced over time. The ship gets a refit occasionally. It's engines and rudder replaced and renewed. Sometimes the seas are flat and easy to navigate, sometimes the seas are rough, and beat against the gunnels, but the ship endures and it keeps on moving forward regardless. I don't lose one nights sleep over the ships state. It's Gods ship, he has a plan and it will endure regardless. I'm far more concerned about the passengers. And taking care of them as I've been instructed to do, in the spirit of Christ.
Conversations that recognize realities that tend to never be acknowledged when a Protestant is present…or in Protestant/Catholic dialogues and debates.
This clarification is nice, but from my observation most Catholics think those in authority like bishops or priests are in elevated positions because they have gone through the training and hold special positions that give them a kind of saint hood. They rely on them to help them with life‘s difficulties because they have more authority and knowledge. Are Catholics therefore supposed to be more cautious and discerning about the leaders of their church or congregation?
This is all very well. But if this Bishop is not speaking out against Pope Francis and other Bishops, if he is only speaking in a general sense against evil ,cthen what good is it really? It is very, cvery easy to geralise in this way. Name names and say why
There has been a deliberate strategy in the Congregation of Bishops...just as there has been in seminaries and parishes to promote certain types of men. These are usually decadent or part of a circle of dissenters whose beliefs abd outlook is pragmatic, taken from secularism and who tickl the ears of the present Pope...who is subverting the office.

Yes, in Germany the vast majority are apostates: google: Timmerevers, Bode, Kohlgraf, König and Cardinal Marx....
There are approximately 5600 bishops in the world, 1/12 of that is almost 467. A lot of bad bishops...
@@ghostapostle7225 Its a numbers game! 🙂
I don't understand your point, but I think its a good one nonetheless.
@@Davidjune1970 Well brother David in Christ, that method really hurt the Church.
Great conversation thanks for asking to the tough and needed questions, Matt. The youth are particularly vulnerable and scandalized. But the Holy Spirit is not going to fail us. Personal holiness will dispel the darkness in our spheres of influence and scatter the confusion that abounds. Praise His Merciful and Knowing Heart!
the pope allows and hides the molester .... btw this is a video on a new naz👁 world order controlled "public" app... you didnt have a convo with your device... or you prolly did sheople.... the answer to this 7:22 bullshit distraction i answered at the beggining of this comment ... they either know the obvious or dont ... complacent either way
@josie I was a little disappointed that he didn't respond to Matt's very direct and specific concern about the silence of Bishops on a very hot topic.
"Personal" holiness is hardly a reasonable standard, and probably the reason so many priests fall short. Our holiness is in Him who is holy.
Good question and what a hell of a no answer. WOW!
Don't know who to be more disappointed at.
What a powerful Bishop🙏
God bless his clarity and courage🙏
God is in charge and separating out the wheat from the chaff🙏
And the ones complaining need to make sure they have their souls in order to face God when he calls🙏
God has won so just stay true and keep fighting for the Truth🙏
Well said, Bishop! Thank you!
What a great explanation. Absolutely love this bishop. God bless him and preserve him.
I hope this post reaches somewhere
Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us
Our Lady, Mother of the Church, pray for us
St. Joseph, Patron saint of the Church, pray for us
All you heavenly angels and saints of God, pray for us. Amen.
@@kerrytopel9835 A possibility, but don't you think that's a little bit over the top?😂
@@osahonnathan6957 well no because I’ve heard a couple of them say as much (about in it to change it).
@@kerrytopel9835 Well, impostor or no impostor, it all boils down to praying for the Church and doing the little we can to make it better.
The best speech ever, may God bless you nothing more I can say
This was sooo good to hear this !!! 💕🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Whoa to them
Wow, rather than Woah
The bishops aren't the problem, you are. Never occurred to you?
@@jonjonson7248 and what exactly did I say that would lead you to make this comment?
Wow. This was excellent. Your channel has really grown on me Matt. Looking forward to the whole episode.
Good interviews, Thanks Matt.
Very refreshing, we need to hear more from him. Great video. Trust in the Divine Mercy of Jesus Christ
Awesome video! Short, sweet, and to the point!
First time to hear of this Bishop (I know, I know) and my does he speak with such conviction and passion. I love it.
We should then anticipate that 466.6 of them are Judas, 466.6 of them are John, and the remainder will either flee or deny Christ, before coming to their senses, repenting, and fighting the good fight after, as his Excellency so beautifully put it, "...a lifetime of suffering."
God bless the Church, God bless His Bishops, each and EVERY one.
Wonderful and hopeful .. thank you 🙏
Be the lighting to be able to shine even for a moment when the storm comes.
This certainly helps to explain all the horrible priests and bishops involved in the sexual abuse scandals over the years. Everyone I know knows at least one priest who was involved. It’s still shocking and painful but since all the guilty parties are human, I guess it shouldn’t be.
The best explanation of the times we are living. Excellent!
Amen. Be the lightening in my realm. Pick up the cross. This is my call.
The weather analogy is a great one, Bishop! God bless you.
So much power in this words! Love it thanks @matt 🙌
The wheat and tares growing together, that's the hardest part when it is our authority that show those same weaknesses. We have to remember they are humans too but it can be hard to remember they needed to be saved too. Thank you, Lord.
How do we know if our bishop is a Judas?
When they ensure that children's First Holy Communions are taught to be given standing and in the hand.....
@@gtaylor178 they gave us choices at ours. Not sure what they do since covid, if they still give on the tongue
I love this explanation. Thank you father
My last confession, I was admonished for believing there is error happening in the church. I was told that he is highly catechized, he studied for years, he study’s the Bible every day and that I am in a grave place to say there is error!!!!! God help me.
Was there an explanation that was reasonable for why you are in error, or was it just a statement?
There are failings in the church. A good priest will admit that. I would separate myself from anyone in the church that says otherwise.
What if you're the problem and Christ's church and his clergy aren't? LEARN HUMILITY
Why is this truth not taught to us Catholics in our schools and at church during the sermons ?
Great video, love this words, thank you both
I needed to hear this. Great video!
Great video
This is worth saving. Refer when you get down. Says it all.
Wonderful talk thanks for sharing with us
That was Fantastic!
What made me lost my faith is that whenever i came to the church for help, they always told me to go somewhere else.
Stay encouraged, Matt! Think of all your listeners. Think about all the converts. The gates of hell will not prevail!
Amazing and uplifting.
What?
How do we get rid of bad bishops?
A swing and a miss. What happens to trust when Rome is nourishing the weeds?
Data shows "scandals" are just as bad or worse in other denominations.
I don’t mind it when we discover the tares among the wheat. I mind when the wheat countenances the tares remaining with them.
Thank You. It is very clear.
Passionate preaching….
We must *not* attack Perdition at all; we have to avoid its presence no matter what; as any attack by us is complete and utter suicide on our parts- we are not designed for that kind of a job; we are designed to *resist* to simply stand-and-defend, not to attack at all.
Boy where are all the bishops like this???
Thank you.
I am a husband, father and grandfather and feel a lot of responsibility for the souls entrusted to me. How much more so must it be for our priests and bishops! We should really pray for them.
We should pray for them to feel that responsibility.
Pope Francis is the greatest Pope since Peter
Contributing to the problem could be baptism without actual conversion; confirmation without conversion; catechesis without actual spiritual conversion; confession without true conversion.
Very good advice!

When a coporation has full of bad managers it's because the CEO isn't doing his Job in filtering out the board of directors.
I must just say Judas failed before the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, all the other Apostles died as Martyrs. I agree with the Bishop but it would be "feeding the flock" well if evil Bishops are excommunicated.
The trouble is that in years past, it was easier to ignore the errors of a pope or bishop because hardly anyone had to means of noticing it.
In the modern version of your analogy, there ship is run by laywomen who are are bereft of a sense of direction and paternal instinct.
Wow, that's truth-telling there.
Conversations that recognize realities that tend to never be acknowledged when a Protestant is present…or in Protestant/Catholic dialogues and debates.
If Judas is the excuse for bad clergy, then how should we behave in regards to obedience? Obey Judas?
With all these attacks by satan on our Church it is concrete proof that we’re at the right place to be!
Why is the Vatican flying the pride flag😢
This is all very well. But if this Bishop is not speaking out against Pope Francis and other Bishops, if he is only speaking in a general sense against evil ,cthen what good is it really?
It is very, cvery easy to geralise in this way.

Yes. Yes and more yes.
Awesome
To everything the bishop said: yes.
This is profound
