    Take a shot every time I say freaking... haha
    So this was my first proper horror film I ever watched, and I did very much enjoy it! Perhaps I should watch more horror films hehe. Midsommar looked so beautiful, but had some very disturbing scenes to say the least. It will probably take some time for me to be able to look at bears the same way again haha.....

      I would say it's not entirely unreasonable to be afraid of Texas, mainly because of shootings, covid, and the failing power grid, but being attacked by an inbred deformed cannibal with a chainsaw should not be on your list of worries. Likewise, in Sweden, I'm perhaps slightly wary about the possibility of moose attacks or peeing myself because I don't have any cash to pay to use a public restroom, but I have no concern that someone is going to menstruate in my beverage or sew me into a bear carcass.

    Midsommar is the perfect visual take on cults and how they look so bright and clean and beautiful,while underneath the craziness is just waiting to snatch and destroy you. While the movie is more about grief and mourning and ugly breakups from neglect and/or gaslighting in relationships, the cult theme fits perfectly because of how easy it is for vulnerable people to be caught up in the illusion of a family, love and kindness that cults sell at a higher cost than you can ever imagine.

    • @jaceh4942
      @jaceh4942 2 года назад +10

      It's also a really good demonstration of how brainwashing can work. After the cliff scene I was just as weirded out by the cult as our main characters, but as time went on I caught myself kind of liking the group in a weird messed up way. Like I caught myself smiling during the dancing scene, I felt happy when Dani won, I felt like the women crying with Dani was actually helping somehow, and when Dani smiled during the end I was involuntarily smiling with her. I had to remind myself that this is not a happy ending lol. I feel like they brainwashed me along with the main character hahaha

    • @MarcosElMalo2
      @MarcosElMalo2 2 года назад +1

      I disagree that the culture represented is a take on modern cults. This isn’t a new age cult. This is a very fringe subculture, but the movie makes it clear that it’s a remnant of a very old and ancient culture, a community with continuity of thousands of years that has managed to adapt itself to the modern world (and to keep its horrifying practices secret). There isn’t “brainwashing” going on. The community members are brought up with these beliefs, beliefs of what is natural, what is acceptable, what is desirable. You are probably the same in a way. What you consider normal is how you were raised. Some of the behaviors you consider normal might be horrifying to someone of a different culture.
      Which is not to condone the behaviors of this society. I don’t think murder is OK, whether it’s ritualized in a religious ceremony or state imposed violence. One can detach oneself from cultural bias without abandoning morals and ethics.
      But interpret the film however you wish. I think this movie goes well beyond your interpretation which is overly simple. What I see in it is a more subtle and nuanced criticism of western culture and our detachment and alienation from our inner lives and painful emotions.
      But I also see this movie as a break up movie. Imagine for a moment that it all takes place in a dream. The rituals represent deep processes that allow Dani to gain some inner peace with regard to breaking up with her shitty boyfriend.

    To foreigners: Even more traditional and/or shamanic celebrations of Midsommar are not dangerous at all. And it's been a while since we stopped using Ättestupor. The more traditional shamanic celebrations of Midsommar is really a great experience.
    Så lite svenska nu istället. Jag gillar din reaktion. Det var väldigt intressant att se skillnaden i våra reaktioner. Jag drog ut på att se filmen pga. att alla amerikaner jag känner sa att den var så otroligt hemsk. Jag har däremot varit skräckfilms-fantast sedan jag första gången såg en skräckfilm för 26 år sedan så väldigt olika utgångspunkt.
    Eftersom jag förväntade mig en film som var 100 gånger "värre" så upplevde jag den mot min förvåning mer som vacker.
    Så här upplever jag filmen. Den börjar tragiskt och hemskt men den slutar lyckligt för huvudkaraktären. Redan tidigt i filmen så tappade jag empatin för hennes kille. Sedan tappade jag gradvis empatin för dem andra karaktärerna, det var lite typisk amerikansk högljuddhet. Jag känner att alla karaktärer som dog bröt mot regler eller betedde sig illa. En kille försöker smygfota deras heliga skrifter, en annan pissar på askan. Paret som började gapa vid ättestupan visade stor brist på respekt och hade planerat fly och anmäla, hur hemsk eller hur udda ritualen än var så är det ett så dumt sätt att reagera på. Medan de andra karaktärerna faller in i typiska roller för karaktärer i skräckfilmer, så utvecklas Dannys story och hon börjar finna ett nytt hem. Hon hade trots allt inget och ingen kvar, ingen familj. Jag känner att berättelsen om hennes karaktär visar att olika människor behöver olika saker och att det var detta som var menat för henne, hennes öde. Vilket man kan se antydningar till i detaljer redan från början av filmen.
    Jag tycker att scenografin är fantastisk och trots att det inte är i Sverige den är filmad så känns det som det.
    Jag blev förvånad att du reagerade så starkt över ättestupan. Själv är jag så van vid det konceptet. Min gammelfarfar berättade för mig om det 1991 när han var 97 år gammal. Han sa att "Nu räcker det för mig, nästan alla jag känt i mitt liv är borta och jag bara går och väntar på att få ta nästa steg. Förr i tiden hade vi ättestupan i (-den by min släkt kommer från-) och ibland önskar man att vi hade gjort likadant idag. Min morfar berättade också ofta om förfäder som hoppat från ättestupan, vilket är en mythology som gått i arv språkmässigt i generationer. Om just dem berättelserna är sanna är omöjligt att veta. Jag bodde också under en gammal ättestupa och vi var ofta med klassen i grundskolan på utflykt till gamla ättestupor och satt och fikade på toppen vid kanten. När det kommer till traditionerna så är många av sakerna man ser i filmen saker vi har firat traditionellt men det är såklart tillagt många saker som vi absolut inte gjorde. Däremot har jag själv firat Midsommar under flera dagar och alla har burit vita eller ljusa kläder. Tjejerna plockade blommor och la under kudden och försökte lägga förtrollningar på killarna. Dansen och majdrottning var inget nytt för mig heller men jag tror det oftast har kallats Midsommar-drottning. Jag själv är nordisk pagan och shaman och jag älskar hur de visade effekten av 🍄svampen/örterna🍄 och hur hon blev ett med naturen 🌲🌿 och folket där. Dem är ett med naturen och med varandra och delar därför känslor, vilket ofta är något shamaner upplever. När det kommer till ritualer så har dem ersatts i modern nordisk tro. Som under Jul då jag hänger ut färskt rått kött i granarna till djuren, ett sätt att ge offra till jorden och gudarna.
    Det bör nämnas att han fick en del kritik för att ha endel rasistiska åsikter om nordisk kultur och att endel har sett den som delvis en pervers propaganda. Även om jag såklart tycker rasism är fel så vet jag inte om jag tycker man ska lägga så mycket vikt vid en film. Jag tycker att den är vacker, men det kanske säger mer om mig än om filmen. Jag kanske är en av dem som amerikanerna är rädda för att träffa 😜. Mycket intressant att se skillnaden i våra reaktioner. Det hade varit kul att se dig reagera till fler skräckfilmer, speciellt de äldre filmerna. Prenumererar utan tvekan. Tack för reaktionen och var safe i dessa tider. 🙌🏻⭐
    (Vill bara tillägga att det jag beskriver i hur jag firar midsommar är just hur jag firar midsommar, så behöver ingen annan pagan könna att jag talar för dem.)

      Actually, Ättestup is only mentioned in one literary source from the medieval period, and historians generally agree that it was probably never a real thing, just a myth. Similarly to how people think iron maidens were used for torture in the medieval period, but it was actually just invented by the English tourism industry in the 1800's to make the medieval era seem more depraved than it actually was.

      I also like films that are able to be scary without relying on the supernatural. There is no part in this movie that suggests the cults "spells" actually work, there are no demons that show up, none of the gods/spirits the cult believe in are actually doing anything. The horror in this film is much more realistic than most horror films in the sense that there is nothing magical or demonic about it. It's just a about a girl getting brainwashed by a group of people with weird beliefs, which is honestly scarier than stories about ghosts or demons in my opinion.

    I'm still looking for a supercut or literally ANYTHING that includes translations for whenever someone said something in Swedish. Having seen the movie, I wanna know if anyone ever foreshadowed or flat out talked about some of the fucked up shit.
    Edit: oh, ok, apparently the version you're watching has subtitles for those moments?
    Mine had not....

    There’s a Norwegian film called Sauna that scared the bejeezus out of me,and I’m pretty immune to horror films. I’d be interested in your take on it, even though it’s Norway, and I’m well aware that Norway is not Sweden. Also, have you seen Broen, the Bridge, loved that series, and also Forbrydelsson, the great Danish show? Also, not Sweden, I know, but… and speaking of Smultron/Wild Strawberries, have your seen Ingmar Bergman’s masterpiece Wild Strawberries? If not, I’d be very interested in your reaction.

    • @dialecticsjunkie7653

      More specifically it looks like Allmoge, which is a style from about 1600s to 1900s everyday people (peak 1700s). The houses resemble Fäbodar which was cottages for summer grazing in about the same time period as allmoge, so it adds up. Even the region, Hälsingland, is even one of three core regions for allmoge and fäbodar.

      I spend it with family/friends and we eat the typical Midsommar foods. We dress up in summer clothes and make flower crowns. And we stay up late and just talk (cause it’s so bright outside). When I was younger though I used to play games, dress the Maypole and dance around it. :)
