The other Subway System in Washington DC: The One for Congress (Senate Side)

  • did you know that the Capitol Building in DC has a subway system that connects to various legislative buildings? Shots of the subway on the Senate side.
    -
    The subway system of the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. consists of three underground electric people mover systems that connect the United States Capitol to the House and Senate office buildings.
    -
    On the Senate side, two separate subway systems exist. The first is similar to the one found on the House side. It connects the Russell Senate Office Building and the Capitol. The other is a computer-controlled system with three trains of three cars each that connects the Hart Senate Office Building, Dirksen Senate Office Building, and the Capitol. It is propelled by a track-side linear motor, while the train cars are unpowered. This line is mostly two-tracked but at the Hart and Capitol stations the tracks converge into one, with a single side platform. This allows easy return travel on the opposite track. The Dirksen station features a side platform for Capitol-bound trains and an island platform for Hart-bound trains. All three of these stations feature platform screen doors. A small maintenance spur is located adjacent to the Hart station. The House and Senate subway systems do not terminate in the same location under the Capitol, but they are connected by a labyrinth of tunnels.

    • @revenevan11

      It's seemingly related to (really descended from, it seems to have variable frequency LIMs driving the mostly passive trains unlike the 60hz older ones) the "people movers" at a couple Disney parks and the Houston airport. Check out the technology connections video about it if you haven't! No real confirmation on the lineage of the tech/transport company that built it, since it's a bit secretive and would've been updated to this decades ago.

      @emilybraswell4570 5 лет назад +24

      It sure is. The Bombardier ones, like can be found at San Francisco Airport, among others, is actually directly descended from the wedway.

    • @JoshDoesTravel
      @JoshDoesTravel 5 лет назад +49

      Actually, it isn’t a WEDway system. There’s no record of Disney involvement in the construction or renovation of any of the lines. The cars, however, are the same as the ones in Houston, though it’s most likely because they came from the same third party contractor. Technology Connection did a pretty good video on this topic if you want to check it out

      In a year, I have done some pretty extensive research as far as the WEDway goes. WDI actually confirmed me that they have had some involvement in this Subway.
      Also, the US Transport Dept. has a pretty extensive assessment about the WEDway, which shows a connection between this system and Houston's.
      And if I remember correctly, WEDway has been deemed the only and official Transport system of US Federal Government-funded systems, which may explain why it is down there.

      Though as I am writing this the Capitol is closed to visitors for obvious reasons, you can write a letter to your Senator or House Rep and ask to be taken for a tour or book one directly through the Tours of the Capitol website. Booking through your representative or Senator means you might get to meet them, if they are in town and there's not a lot going on. Usually a Capitol tour guide takes you around, but sometimes it is a member of your elected official's staff. When we went, we had to schedule a time and arrived at the Hart Senate Office building at about 9 in the morning. Our Senator's staff showed us around the office building and then we hopped on the people mover to the Capitol building (we took the first one you saw in the video, the one with an operator and no roof). From there an official Capitol tour guide showed us around with a group of like ten other people. You don't need a reservation but it's best to get one and really you want to start in the morning as there is a lot to see... the best part is that it is completely free!

    I was down there. By myself.
    1981 age 15-16 ..While visiting DC on a class trip with very little supervision I went to the Capitol and got the "tour" . After hearing that representatives take an underground commuter trains I decided to see if I could check it out. I don't remember how I actually made my way down into the tunnels but I was down there walking along side the tracks on a very well lit wide walkway. It kept going and going.. I passed by an open office and there were two gentlemen attending to what had to be the largest shortwave radio I'd ever seen. I started getting nervous about getting in trouble and was starting to look for a way back up .. looking for any stairway etc. I'd been down there walking around for some time when I finally found a stairwell back up and I went down a dark narrow corridor. I dont remember seeing any artifacts or anything but I happened to come up into the basement of one of the Smithsonian buildings. Natural History. I got back outside and was completely confused as to where I was. I hadn't figured it was the Smithsonian yet. I saw the Washington monument and walked as quickly as possible back to the school buses waiting on me and another student to return. The other student was much later than me so I didn't get in trouble. Thinking back.. it was sad I just couldn't relate to many other students. I didnt have ANY friends with me ? Sad BUT I think I wud have gotten in trouble or forced to go back up into the Capitol with a group of kids. By being all alone I was naturally stealthy. I wonder what the two doods operating the short wave were actually doing with that thing. They both looked right at me ... I thought I was about to get into trouble lol. DC is crazy full of secrets. I believe. I wonder if u can get down there now days. I doubt it especially after Jan 6.

    If anyone is wondering why they sound strange, it's because the motors are run by a so called GTO thyristor, or other form of variable frequency drive. The thyristor basically turns the motor on and off extremely quickly as a way of modulating it. Sometimes there can just be three steps, like the trains around my parts, or there can be a whole ton of steps, like there would be here.

      The first style of train shown does need an operator as it's powered by a pantograph with the motors and controls in the train itself - basically like a streetcar/trolley. The second style of train doesn't need an operator and is powered by linear induction motors in the track like Disney's Peoplemover.

      I used that when I worked at the LOC. Very nice. The old one looks like chitty chitty bang bang. Its used to speed up trips between the office buildings. Everyone who works there use them but most people just walk. The public can use them too depending but you have to know where to find them. They are not advertised like metro. Most of the tunnels are so old, they look like they were built during the civil war and only a few new ones look that nice.

  • @Jsfun
    @Jsfun 6 лет назад

    What's the point? I figured it would be like a fancy private subway that connects two major government buildings or something but this just seems like a generic transport network. It doesn't even appear to have special security. Why spend so much on it if it's not public?

    • @regould221
      @regould221 6 лет назад

      It does connect major government buildings. All the security is at the doors to the buildings so you don't need it on the subway. Although that wasn't the original intent it does make it easier to get between building without dealing with security.

    • @Jsfun
      @Jsfun 6 лет назад

      regould221 Its not particularly nice though, is my point. They could have built a public mass transit system instead, and actually contributed to the city. Its not particularly nice or anything, it just seems a little bit of a waste to me.

    • @regould221
      @regould221 6 лет назад

      I guess you aren't familiar with the voting rules in congress. The votes are 15 minutes long. Many members are working in their office or are in hearings when the votes start. A walk from the office buildings to the capitol can take 15 minutes especially in bad weather. Note that the voting rules were created when everybody worked in the capitol but as the country grew with more states and bigger staffs for members they had to expand out to other buildings and the walks got longer. Also note that when this was first built in 1906 the city did have a public mass transit system. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streetcars_in_Washington,_D.C.

    • @Jsfun
      @Jsfun 6 лет назад

      Not sure why that would matter? Worst case scenario they add a private carriage for US Govt workers. It wouldn't slow the system down. That way all the money spent building the tracks, station and tunnel isn't wasted - it helps locals travel too.

    • @regould221
      @regould221 6 лет назад

      The tracks only exist between the capitol and the office buildings next to the capitol. The locals can use it but what would be the point unless you want to travel between the office buildings and the capitol building. Even then if you are starting from the outside it is quicker to walk than to deal with security to get into the buildings to get to the subway. Note that the Washington DC metro system has stations on both sides of the capitol complex area.
