  • This month, August 2019, marks the 400th Anniversary of the first known arrival of enslaved Africans to what has now become the United States of America.
Inspired by the New York Times’ 1619 Project, this is Wilmington, Delaware’s story: The 1639 Story. A story of slavery and freedom in the small “First State” with a strong divide, and the city that would play host to some of the strongest advocates in the abolishment of slavery.

Wow being from Wilmington, Delaware this is an amazing story that needs to be shared with my era and those after I. With all of the senseless violence surrounding us right now, this story shines light on all of the greatness my city and state was bestowed upon 🙌🏾👏🏾

My ancestor had an Underground Railroad under a bar in Wilmington Delaware. Harriet brought them to him now and then I think. One ancestor was Garrett. Our ancestors were quakers in new garden pa, an moved down to Newport.
My Irish ancestors were slaves too in de.
