I'm very late to the game on Vaughn videos but the way he talks about his Nannie is exactly how I feel about my MawMaw and this video made me so emotional! I also made yum-yum with my MawMaw when I was younger but haven't in years... adding it to the docket ASAP.
OK the problem with this recipe is he doesn’t tell us the amounts of anything except for he doesn’t tell us how many like with the measurements are I’m trying to make this I have to make it before I leave for work, so if anybody has the recipe exactly cause I need to know what I need to buy at the store
My family has a similar recipe. It must be a Southern thang! My mother hails from the Carolinas. Our family recipes only does the bottom layer of crackers and melted butter, but add walnuts during the processing. We also use blueberries instead of cherries and add lemon juice & zest to the cream cheese. But truly, there are so many variations possible using different fruit compotes, additions to the crust (and/or topping) and switching up flavor combinations in the cream filling. I could riff for hours on the possibilities: apples + cinnamon + almond, pineapple + ginger + coconut, apricot + saffron + pistachios.
Oooh, thanks for this comment! I'd never heard of this kind of dessert and kept thinking, "I wonder if this is as good with another fruit or if that's sacrilege". Cherry is not my favorite fruit so I love your suggested variations.
this is super popular in the netherlands with monchou or marscapone cheese!! i usually use speculaas or speculoos cookies for the crust and make a raspberry sauce
I was just wondering if raspberry would be a good alternative, and also what European version of graham crackers I should use, so thank you for this comment!
@@sarahdaestrela6098 I've also seen English baking shows substitute graham crackers with ginger snap biscuits which would be a great twist for the holidays!
My great grandmother had a similar dessert that was famous in our family called Cherry Delight Pie. It was in a pie crust, but used Dream Whip and Cream cheese with the canned cherry pie filling on top. So delicious. I’ll have to try this one!
These flavours are so much like the Danish Christmas dessert Risalamande (has a French name to make it sound fancy, but is very Danish). It's a rice pudding with vanilla, whipped cream and chopped up almonds drenched in cherry sauce. Highly recommend trying out that as well!
Thank you Vaughn for sharing your family recipe! We have a couple of family recipes that are made every year. A super easy grasshopper pie, using a pre-made chocolate crust, Coolwhip and creme de methe and cocoa. Also a mocha cake with a chocolate and coffee whipped cream topping… omg! Sometimes the most simplest of desserts can bring back intense memories with the oh so cozy gatherings ❤ Merry Christmas to all
creme de methe? Everyone would have plenty of energy after desert! ("You mean he is always like that?" 12 Internet points to the person who identifies the quote.)

this is the most perfect NYT recipe I've ever seen to make my family for the holidays (we're from the midwest and love our dairy-full layered desserts)
Boone NC here! I've been making Cherry Yum Yum for years, 45 years actually. Its was at every church social event. I just made it this morning for my Thanksgiving contribution with MI friends. The recipe we use has sweetened condensed milk instead of whipped cream. It's nostalgia on a spoon!
I'm hosting Christmas for my large family and really wanted a no-bake dessert recipe since I have several other things to make. And this recipe will save my life!
My family made this all the time when I was growing up, but without the top layers (stopping at the cherry pie filling, as another commenter mentioned). We called it Cherry Delight. I had no idea it had so many names!
I've let go of my cooking subscription but I sure like seeing these on RUclips, especially when Vaughn or Melissa are on. or with Erin Jeanne McDowell and Scott. Loved this one, too.
One of my biggest pet peeves with chefs is how they crap all over store bought/cheaper ingredients that a lot of people use when they cook. I appreciate Vaughn showing it's not only ok to use but that you can make some great recipes with them.
This is very similar to a dessert my family made on repeat all through the 60s and 70s. Instead of cherry pie filling, this dessert had a Danish junket raspberry pudding as the red fruit component. It was a super favorite and I wish I could find the recipe! I just might have to make this one.
I have a pretty similar recipe with amarettini splattered with amaretto or cherry liquid If kids are also eating it, a layer of drained canned sweet-and-sour cherries (usually 1 large jar here, in Germany they are called Schattenmorellen), and then a layer of mascarpone whipped up with a little milk, sugar, and vanilla to your taste. Decorate with grated chocolate or as you wish. The whole thing takes ca. 10 minutes to assemble If you choose 1 large dish. It also can be served quickly and doesn't have to sit very long. Very almondy, but also really good. But now I will try yours as well, this looks so good. ❤️
There is a similar dessert at a local little place in Houston Texas call Yum Yum Pie, its nearly the same but with a chocolate filling instead of cherry.
I'm not sure which is more tasty -- this recipe or Vaughn. YUM! I have a recipe for blueberry yum yum which is virtually identical, just swap blueberry pie filling for cherry filling.
My family make something similar, the recipe handed down from my grandmother on her literal deathbed, she called it "Cherry Cha Cha" and it's a Christmas dinner staple. Everyone needs to try this recipe. Even if you don't like cherries (I generally don't) you will probably like this.
My family makes something similar but adds half a can of frozen limeade concentrate to the cream cheese layer and omit the almond extract. It's so refreshing in the summer. Light and citrusy!
Did Celine Dion cover All by Myself? It’s one of my all time favorites written and performed by the great Eric Carmen of the Raspberries ! I remember how upset I was when it was beaten out by Killing me softly for song of the year. Which is also one of my favorites. But, I digress. I have a can of cherry pie filling on my pantry shelf and now I know what I can do with it!
Put in fridge after each layer for a few minutes, then spread the next layer. Refrigerate several (6) hours before serving. If you can find a dark cherry pie filing (Italian, perhaps) it would be better. Shave dark chocolate on top?
That looks so good (so "yum -yum-y"). I think many people will find it plausible that it's the best thing from Vaughn's family other than Vaughn. The only little nitpicky criticism I have is Vaughn didn't reference Emma Thompson in Love Actually in this recipe like he did in that gingerbread cookie one. However, if he gave Emma Thompson a bite of this dessert, I think she could have easily gotten over Alan Rickman!
We used to make 1 cherry and 1 strawberry (split the cracker mixture and cream between 2 separate dishes) and was always a hit. I'm not sure you would want to use any other fillings. Try the original first and you'll get an idea of the sweetness and texture. Enjoy!
Dude my family has a similar dessert it hails from Philly. Called cherry delight but pretzels instead of graham cracker and the cherry layer is the topper.
For anyone out there who likes to be exact, I weighed the graham crackers instead of eyeballing it and it comes out to be a little over 10 ounces on the bottom and top.
0:27 “It’s truly my family’s most prized creation, other than myself.”
LOL 😂
I love that Vaughn is bringing us cherry yum yum on NYT Cooking! Protect Vaughn at all costs.
He is a national treasure
Agreed.
If I could only save one person it would be Melissa Clark; sorry Vaughn, you're shark food.
The strawberry version is called Strawberry Suprise. Suprise! I like this version better!
I love you Vaughn!! Thank you for sharing your Nanny with us. What a treasure.

I want to tell the editor (?) who timed the beeps of the microwave with the beat of the music that you have absolutely made my day
How lucky are we to be able to live at the same time as Vaughn. I love you so much and cannot wait to make this.

This is a very Midwestern dessert and I'm happy to see something like this on NYT.
Culinary theater! Genuine, sweet delivery! Received with love!
This looks wonderful! Cherries and almonds are related botanically, so you are spot on using almond flavor.
Love Vaughn always!!!!❤❤
I love and welcome all Vaughn videos! This reminds me of something I would eat with my family over the holidays. Thanks for sharing!

Here in Canada, we call it cherry cheesecake square and stop at the cherries (no additional top 2 layers)
that sounds so delish. thank you
If we choose to get fancy with the Amaretto should we substitute the same amount we would have used of the vanilla and almond extract?
My late Mother-in-law used to bring this to pot luck dinners all the time. I'm pretty sure she contributed it to a church cookbook.
Cherry yum yum is soooo good. And you can make different variations of it.
