I grew up watching PMQs on C-SPAN. On one of my visits to London in 2002, by sheer luck, I was allowed into the visitors gallery to see the House of Commons debate the government’s legislative program. I saw the Prime Minister and other main party leaders speak and take questions. It was pretty surreal to be there. especially as an American. It felt a bit like scoring a ticket to the State of the Union.

Hilarious you make this comment in a PMQs where they're talking about her privatising water. Have you read the news in England recently? Sewage leaking into water streams up and down the country, the tax payer getting footed for the bill by the private companies so they can still deliver profits to their shareholders. Thatcher was a robust politician but ultimately very short-sighted
Ben Willock Certainly the liveliest Parliament in the world! No falling asleep, like the French sometimes, or vaulting how many Arabs there murdered each week in the US Congress & Senate meetings.

One of the last great Conservatives of the UK Conservative Party. Reagan was the last great Republican President of the United States. Our society has really gone to shit with what we have now!!
Do you mean the same Reagan that increased government spending to hitherto unknown levels, some Conservative. Apparently in those days and throughout the Bush years the GOP wasn't concerned about government spending they only discovered that topic when Obama got in the White House and tried to put right the economic meltdown that Bush had bequeathed to him before leaving office.
Tridhos What fantasy land are you in or what drugs are you on??? You can't possibly be serious. And one thing Reagan did, was pull this country together after the disgrace of Watergate, the failure of Ford, and the ramblings and disgusting leadership of Carter. At least, love him or hate him, Reagan let you know where he stood and he stood by his decisions.
jaxbus3000 You will note I was talking about fiscal responsibility which you haven't bothered to address. Reagan let spending rip which didn't seem to bother anyone in the GOP at the time. Also more government appointees were involved in scandals than at any time before or since. Reagan himself was heavily involved in the Iran/Contra scandal, oh yes he forgot what he did, that was his defense.Just to remind you he was selling arms to people who had taken Americans hostage. Do you remember the 241 US Military Personnel that were killed in the Beirut bombing after Reagan sent troops into Lebanon against the unanimous advice of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and then withdrew everyone as fast as he had put them in.compare that to the fuss that has been made about Benghazi. Reagan also issued more executive orders in both his terms than have ever been issued by Obama but that somehow didn't seem to worry the GOP at the time. Before you accuse anyone of being in fantasy land you need to read what happened under Reagan.
I think neither Maggie nor Neil understand how to read a balance sheet. Selling off an asset would not be included as profit but rather as an exceptional item. It is not an operating profit. If Neil or the audit commission think that it was sold off cheaply why did they not suggest a company which was prepared to pay the higher amount - as Maggie alludes to.
British Leyland wasn't an 'asset' it spent the majority of its life completely insolvent and had to be bailed out by the taxpayer every year. It's a pure miracle British Aerospace paid £150m for it at all. BAe's decision to buy it would lead Bae to record losses by 1991 and the ousting of its chairman in a boardroom coup. Bae would sell British Leyland to BMW in 1994 and even BMW couldn't make a go of it and then their chairman was also sacked partially for the decision to buy it. Leyland was thorough jinxed and the consolidation and nationalisation of the car industry in the 1960s was the worst decision ever.
Why would the government be owning an auto company in the first place? If I became head of government, the first thing I'd want to do is get rid of things like that.
Volkswagon, the most successful automobile company in the world was created and owned by Hitler's German government. It worked extremely well for them, although it's understandably not a fact that they like to advertise.
+Ryan Dong VW has thrived under private ownership. A little known fact is that as part of war reparations the German government offered VW to Austin for free The idiots running the show here at the time said no thanks. It seems for a period after the war Britain was ran by lunatics who made stupid decisions.
Because the loopy socialists who ran Britain for a time until she took ovee thought it would be a nice thing to buy up railways, car makers, aeroplane manufacturers, steel works, phone companies, and everything else and subsidise all this at the taxpayers expense while running each one into the ground and making our companies a laughing stock. While Ford was making the glamorous Mustang, our government owned Austin was churning out the 'Allegro' google it.
nudisco300 It also thrived under Hitler's socialist policies, that was when the brand was founded and rapidly became a world leader. Also, those "idiots" who ran Britain after WWII did a great job of rebuilding the nation and significantly increasing the quality of life for the average citizen.
+Ryan Dong As soon as the war ended the utilities and companies that had been nationalised as part of the war effort should have been privatised, perhaps with some low interest loans given to the new owners as a sweetener. Government is there to manage tax collection and co-ordinate essential things like health and education. Owning a railway, dozens and dozens of car companies, a phone company and a whole host of businesses is not the governments job.

The fact that they even got a penny for these so-called "assets" is amazing. Who would want to buy them? If I'd had the money, I wouldn't touch them. And when Kinnock and his cohorts talked about "public" ownership, he does in fact mean state ownership, where ordinary people have no power, no influence over any decisions... yeah, real public
What's amazing is that she was elected in the first place, followed by winning three consecutive general elections to give her the longest continuous tenure of a PM in 150 years. However it ended does not change that accomplishment.

thank you. i didnt know how to respond on youtube so ill have to do it on here. for an email on general questions if you know please respond via that way. ive watched all of them. do you know any place else?
Any relevance in the date to what happened a year later?
Those MPs know they're being televised, so I think they're acting up a bit for the cameras, making even more of those silly noises than usual
Paul Williams
It’s typically been extremely rowdy. In 1976 during a debate it even once nearly got physical.
@@joellaz9836 heh - what was the debate about? That was the year Harold Wilson resigned and the "lavender list" nonsense
I was one year old at this time! :-)
Were they always this rowdy or were they playing it up for TV?
Can somebody tell me what was being said at 5:27 - 5:35
If u r from Liverpool, u probably do not know her philosophy of working hard, paying taxes, not claiming off the state!
are you dead now?
We are lightyears behind this in Hungary... :(
We in Serbia won't have it ever xD
UPDATE...
Rover brand owned by JLR, who use their factory to make the range rover model + land rovers.
Vauxhall - still exist at location mentioned, an have expanded factory !
Did Kinnock say Rover or The "Royal" Mail?
Christopher Gill, Tory MP for Ludlow 1987- 2001, would stand again in Ludlow as a candidate for UKIP in 2010
Thank you for posting these Margaret Thatcher videos, very enjoyable, those not wanting brexit should watch them all mostly the young one's that think we can't survive without the eu. she had the eu sussed so long ago and now in the future all she said is true. Thatcheritescot what did you think of The Iron Lady movie?
spot on.
Kind of sad that pmqs wasn’t shown during the 1970s and even 1980s for nearly all of it. Even a radio broadcast version of those years would be at least something..
why some people rise when a speaker is done quetioning? and either does the PM is done answering
+김성근 The questions during the Prime Minister's Questions period are submitted ahead of time to allow time for the Prime Minister time to research the question and provide the answer. However, 'MPs who are not selected may be chosen to ask a supplementary question if they "catch the eye" of the Speaker, which is done by standing and sitting immediately before the prime minister gives an answer.' (see: Wikipedia, "Prime Minister's Questions" article)
Hey Thatcher thanks to you the UK is falling apart.
No mention of Blair?
It used to be much easier to tell teh Tories and Labour MPs apart: tThe labour ones were usually shabbily dressed.
You mean they began televising this only in 1989?!
Yep!
Mal Cors shame, right? I wish we could watch Mrs Thatchers earlier PMQs
@@RVAnne22 Yeah, I was reading up on the history of PMQs, and I came to RUclips looking for grainy footage of Heath vs. Wilson, B&W surviving clips of Douglas-Home, maybe newsreel coverage of Churchill.
Instead, I find a televised institution only 30 years old. So much history untelevised.
@@TimThomason Somewhere, you'll probably find lots of audio recordings of PMQs. They were on the radio long before TV cameras got in there.
ps do you have audio from her in opposition?
thanks
-an American follower of Thatcherism
The fact that they even got a penny for these so-called "assets" is amazing. Who would want to buy them? If I'd had the money, I wouldn't touch them. And when Kinnock and his cohorts talked about "public" ownership, he does in fact mean state ownership, where ordinary people have no power, no influence over any decisions... yeah, real public
Thomas Longrigg So true.
What's amazing is that she was elected in the first place, followed by winning three consecutive general elections to give her the longest continuous tenure of a PM in 150 years. However it ended does not change that accomplishment.
Great to see Maggie wiping the floor with Kinnock, as usual!
David Elliott Wasn't hard. Kinnock was weak as fuck.
***** Kinnock and every Labour leader who came after him were not fit to speak against Maggie as she always had the poeole with her, it is called DEMOCRACY!
+David Elliott Yeah, and talk about unprofessional. As a yank, I don't know much about Brit politicians in terms of their personal lives, but mister Kinnock appears about 18 sheets to the wind here.
+sam little Hi Sam, yes, Kinnock was so lightweight, but then again, Maggie was a heavyweight, a politician that stood up for the UK and made us proud to be British again, just like Ronnie did in the USA! Hope u r well over the pond.
David Elliott Well, the future is uncertain. The paradox is, that uncertainty is also where hope lies. I want to believe Hilary is beatable. The other more cynical and calculating half of me thinks we should throw all our resources at elections other than the presidential one. We'll just have to wait and see. Cameron's no Thatcher, but I was glad to see him hold down the fort. Wishing you well from the colonies.
Love Maggie. Surprised that Alan Clark (who I also enjoyed) was sitting next to her on this big day.
I wish they would start a full brawl like the parliaments of Spain and South Korea.
The country needs to be seriously fucked up before it gets to that point.
Imagine if Rover was still state owned!
They've been like that since 1640. Worse since the tv cameras were allowed in. Why do you think they're called 'The Commons?'
Can we make the new speaker dress properly.
Thatcher was Britain's greatest Prime Minister.
BlergleslinkVettermoo Nope, it was Churchill
As a Pole, I respectfully disagree.
BlergleslinkVettermoo There are many sections, communities and people in this country who would strongly disagree with your opinion.
+BlergleslinkVettermoo As a Pole, nobody is interested in your opinion!
She was the worst prime minister in British history no prime minister divided the nation like she did
God Bless the Iron Lady! Thank you, Lady Thatcher .
RIP Maggie
In hindsight, Thatcher wrong on every count. If you think she was right, defend the present order of things. Any challengers?
Kinnock was off his rocker thinking they would get a pence more on that dreadful dog Rover.
She has debating skills I envy, and everyone, even those that oppose her must admit her rhetorical technique is superb.
Where are you getting all this footage ? There are some cracking moments. Although I am not a Tory and not a fan of Thatcher in the political sense, although I am not going to spread hate and abuse the tories and thatcher, because I really enjoy your channel. but by god was she good at PMQ's. She was firm, tough but also humorous and witty. Brilliant.
Every free-loading, work-hating bum hates Thatcher, because she said you MUST work in order to get paid, not because you just hang around.
clarence spencer moron
@@mema4922 Get a job, bum. Meanwhile we're rebuilding the british empire!!!!
Every single debate Maggie completely owned Kinnock. Difficult to tell whether she was that good, or him completely weak. Mixture of both I suspect.
tony blair would owned maggie so easily
Lol some of the MP's seem slightly camera shy, but not Margaret.
