  • This video features Victoria Lock, the final stage of the Newry canal before it enters the Irish sea. It allowed sea going vessels access to the port of Newry, some three miles upstream, in early times to collect coal and deliver it to England. Unfortunately the Irish coal supplies soon ran out and the role was reversed whereby the ships brought coal from England to Newry for distribution around the local area.
Now the lock provides a place of interest and a picnic area along with access to the canal for anglers.
    Enjoy.
    Alistair.

Wow wow wow. Love it. Lesser spotted ulster wouldn't have a look in. So we'll put together. Just on another not, my late father was a great historian.many years ago he was working in the Fisher offices a long the Quay in newry, electrical work and there was a skip full off old paper work to be dumped. He managed to recover several ship log books, Inc the alder, the oak ect ect. Still have them and quit detailed, crew, destination, tonnage and journey descriptions. They were related to coal and timber journey's.
    Well done again alister.

Eddie, I don't think Joe Mahon is in any danger just yet but I do appreciate your comments. It's amazing the amount of history that's on our doorsteps. Those ship logbooks must be very interesting. Well worth keeping.
