For my second Pride Month video, I chose to revisit a favorite anime of mine in order to share some Hamtaro trivia you’ve never heard of before.

Hey there! Admin from Ham-Ham Paradise (the main Hamtaro fandom community) here. I just wanted to mention that, albeit I can't speak for the fandom as a whole, it is widely accepted that Hamstarr is indeed non-binary!
However, there's a few things I would like to point out:
-We apologize for the mishap on the wiki. One of the members of our community is a very active editor of the wiki and tries her best to keep it updated, fighting people that makes weird edits and adding as much information as possible. Everyone is aware that fandom wikis are a bit of a... mess, but we are very proud of the information and detail we add to all of our pages there. I have noticed that someone has already made the changes to the page, so that should be good now.
-Hamstarr appearance on the second Hamtaro movie, The Captive Princess, may not actually be the Hamstarr from the games. This is just speculation, of course, but the voice on the movie is quite masculine and the possible Hamstarr is credited as "Card Clerk" (カードウリ) in the credits instead of their japanese name, "Hamuuru-san" (ハムールさん). Plus, the design is a bit different (mainly, missing the green star on their left ear). The movie is REALLY good, so I recommend everyone to give it a look, even though Hamstarr is absent past their quick scene.
-There are a few other places to check for information! Recently it was discovered that there is a prototype for a USA release of Hamtaro Rainbow Rescue (which is EU and Japan exclusive) with a few changes in dialogue, but we are unaware if the translation there gives Hamstarr any gender or keeps it ambiguous like the EU release. As Lunarpanda's message mentioned, Howdy does call him a "he" in the european release of Rainbow Rescue, but the japanese is ambiguous regarding this.
-The Hamtaro manga does not interact with Hamstarr, but the Vol. 2 of Tottoko Hamutaro Hamuchanzu de Gozaimachu has a big list of all hamsters, one of them being Hamstarr. On that list, their name is featured alongside a purple symbol with an interrogation mark inside that is not seen next to any other character (the other symbols being blue and pink to specify their gender) and their description is translated as "Enveloped by mystery. A fortune telling hamster.".
We are really happy to see people diving into Hamtaro lore, it makes us really happy to see more people remember the show and look into it! We also hope you had fun playing the games, they're really good
Ah thank you so much for the added information!! I had no idea about some of this, and I love that Tottoko Hamutaro Hamucahnzu dr Gozaimachu further supports the fact that their gender is never specified and kept a continual mystery. I have to say, I really love the work that HamHamParadise has done in researching into Hamtaro information as well as providing a place to watch all the episodes!! I use Hamhamparadise exclusively for watching my favorite show :3

My theory for why the fandom wiki assumes that Hamstarr is referred to with he/him, might have to do with mistranslations. From what I can tell, Japanese has a wildly different pronoun system (I'm not Japanese/don't speak Japanese, so dont quote me on that), therefore auto-translation often just settles on he. You see this when translating Japanese comments under youtube too, or when a Japanese person uses he to refer to a character with she/her pronouns because they're using a translator. If the person writing the wiki saw the show or played the games with a translator, that'd explain the confusion! Just a guess tho

On a more serious note, this was a fascinating video. I know basically nothing about Hamtaro but I still found this video worth watching as well as easy to follow for me despite my complete lack of knowledge and familiarity with the series. I also appreciate the dedication and research that went into this video, it builds trust and shows a genuine commitment to finding and showing quality information, I love watching videos like this where you can see the creators genuine passion and interest peaking through in every step while searching for the information they share.

I would make a comment on my thoughts on this theory/analysis video, but I don't have enough experience with the Hamtaro franchise or enough knowledge on the nuances of gender identifications (As someone who is but a cisbi male.), so I'll keep quiet.
I am surprised that you managed to get so much success so fast. Wish that could be me, but then again, I ain't a video essay maker, and people eat that shit up regardless of the topic.

I really like when non binary characters are introduced in children's media. Because its a very simple topic, that everyone could understand. You dont need to make a entire history about why that character is non binary, you just dont tell the gender! (And i will introduce one on MY cartoon muahaha)

@@toma-neko ohh im looking forward to it. the pokepark games are really special to me, i could nerd abt them for hours! pokepark 1 is such a comfort game for me, while pokepark 2 has a memorable story and a really unique and sometimes creepy atmosphere. i saw u used klonoa music in ur other vids and so i will use this comparison: the vibe of pokepark 2 kinda reminds me of how the ending of klonoa 1 contrasts with the whimsical vibe of the rest of the game. actually that whole game has that atmosphere of being happy and whimsical but with a vaguely nightmare-like(?) vibe also being present somehow. not just the ending. 'creepy' and 'nightmare-like' might be too strong words, but idk how to describe it aaa

Thank you for this information, it really helps get to the bottom of this, and seeing as they use “San” for Hamstarr I think that’s very telling that the writers wanted them to have an ambiguous gender (especially since “kun” and “Chan” are used so heavily to differ the hamsters genders in the Japanese version) I’ll pin this comment so everyone can see cause I think this is probably the best we’re going to get in terms of extra info. I don’t think we should use any pronouns to refer to Hamstarr. Instead of they/them, use Hamstarr/Hamstarr to refer to Hamstarr.

In Japan they usually don't use pronouns, but their name instead, and cause of that they use kare (he) and kanojo(she) to refer to boyfriend and girlfriend
Yeah I studied Japanese for a while, so I was sorta familiar with the lessened use of pronouns, so even if no one looks into the Japanese dialogue regarding Hamstarr, I really doubt anything will come up (Besides possibly gendered words like "Kun" or something else. Again, I didn't get very far with my studies.)
@@toma-neko another thing is whatever words used to refer to yourself, boku and ore are both masculine, while watashi is feminine or neutral, and usually used by characters of more ambiguous gender. One interesting detail I've noticed that I think might just be coincidence (or maybe not?) is lots of characters who are meant to have an unknown gender speak very formally, since informal speech is sometimes viewed as a more specifically masculine trait.
just as a note I'm not fluent in japanese or anything, just putting what I know down as well
@@ahuman5868 That's right, but ''BOKU'' gives the feeling of boyish and it's also used for Tomboyish girls on animes, and ''ORE'' is much more manly and rude than ''BOKU''. Here below has some more exemples:
KASHIRA = ''I wonder'' (only girls can use, KANA is the neutral form)
ATASHI = ''I'' (is more feminine, but it's more common by aunts)
WA = final sentence particle (gives emotion, it's feminine, but men can use it as well with a lower tone)

I would love to hear you talk about the history of Mini Hamuzu, the hamham variant of the group Mini Moni, and their interesting history.
The only thing I know is that Guu (the one voiced by Mari Yaguchi, aka the yellow hamster) left the group by the time the Grand Prix movie came out, replaced by Taka Ham (one of the background dancers from the first movie and voiced by Ai Takahashi)
I feel that this would make for a really good video about why they were in every movie and how they became to be.
