  • Among the most vibrant clusters of architectural neighbourhoods in India, the towns of Shekhawati in the state of Rajasthan have a distinct architectural vocabulary, blending Rajput and Islamic forms. What characterizes this region as no other is its abundance of exuberantly painted havelis. Shekhawati region is famously known as ‘an open-air-art-gallery’, for its wealth of mural paintings, consists of the areas falling under Sikar, Jhunjhunu and some parts of Churu, Nagaur and Jaipur district.

    This small visual tour takes you through the uniqueness of Shekhawati art, the opulence of this tradition of painting, along with the variety in subjects, represented on the walls as a mirror to the society, chosen by the painters.
    Variety of themes which can be witnessed on the buildings of Shekhawati, from religious themes, ragamalas, folk mythology, to historical events, and emergence of industrialisation in India. It is a paradise for Heritage enthusiasts and artists. This increase in Heritage Tourism has directed a path for conserving the painted havelis by the owners and creating heritage hotels and resorts.
